The Boondock Saints

Troy Duffy has a big announcement for St. Patrick’s Day: Boondock Saints 2 might be happening after all. According to Duffy, Sony Picture Studios has greenlit The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day, and the original cast (with the exception of Willem Dafoe) are excited to return. Duffy claims that the film will begin shooting Summer 2008. He made the announcement in a video posted on his YouTube account earlier today (thanks to /Film reader IronMonger for sending this in). The video was quickly removed from the video sharing site, but can be seen below.

After having seen Overnight, a documentary on the making of the original Boondock Saints and the meltdown of Troy Duffy, I’m not quite sure this will actually happen (yes, even after an official announcement). I am however a huge fan of the first film. Many believed the original screenplay was on par with Quentin Tarantino’s early work, the finished film - not as much (again, see Overnight). Despite poor reviews and non-existent box office (Mojo lists a domestic total of $30,471), The Boondock Saints quickly became a cult classic among film fanatics.

Duffy announced in March 2002 that a second film had found financial backing and would have twice the budget of the original film, and “experience a theatrical release.” But legal problems delayed the project again and again.

Discuss: Do you want to see a Boondock Saints sequel? Will it ever actually happen?

In Chandler voice: oh -MY- god!

This could be amazing. What was the meltdown about?

  2. Gravatar

That just happened! Thank you Sony Picture Studios! This might have just made this day the best birthday I’ve ever had!

  3. Gravatar

in world with the lost boys 2 doomsday and other stupid movies this movie has something diffrent a chance

  4. Gravatar

own the special edition of the boondock saints, loved Overnight. we’ll see what happens; Duffy has been talking about this for years… i hope he’s grown up.

  5. Gravatar

    Hollywood is eating itself again.

  6. Gravatar

Danatic - go rent Overnight. You will not be sorry - it is memorizing watching Duffy self-destruct, and how many in Hollywood were ready to anoint him the-next-big-thing.

  7. Gravatar

fuck willem dafoe…is the cat coming back for revenge in this one?

  8. Gravatar

    lol @ thekillingjoke’s comment.

i thought the original boondock saints was horribly overrated in the minds of those who valued it as a cult classic. there is a narrative arc yes, but it seems the characters begin and end as the same people. there was no progression. a second one would have to be more than the first for me to mention it in the same breath as tarantino

  10. Gravatar

it appears that a giant dose of humility has calmed duffy, & i hope its not just on the surface. im 100% behind this film, though im really disapointed to hear dafoe wont be back.

  11. Gravatar

orange cinema…do u work at the orange cinema in Connecticut??…

  12. Gravatar

I absolutely adore the first movie - and I don’t know why… I really shouldn’t, given the average acting ability of the supporting actors along with the huge stereotyping. Yes, Willem Dafoe gave an incredible performance - over the top, but perfectly pitched - and the brothers were good too, but while it was a theatrical movie in scope, it was a TV movie in execution (in fact, I’m surprised to hear that it had a theatrical release).

Yet for some reason, I find it brilliantly entertaining, and one of my favorite movies.

As for a sequel? I’m not sure about the prospect of getting more action out of Billy Connelly - as a UK resident, I know him for his standup, and perhaps his softer persona, so to see him as a hitman, it’s kind of jarring and humorous for all the wrong reasons… Would be good to see the brothers back. Won’t be the same without Rocco - or the cat!

    Catch you on the flipside…

  13. Gravatar

Boondock Saints is WAY overrated. Cult classic? I just didn’t get it.

  14. Gravatar

It’s a “cult classic” for chachi’s, meat heads and frat boys. Yet another tired and uninspired post Tarantino knock off.

  15. Gravatar

Yeh.. I never understood the attraction to that film…

I still laugh at Willam Defoe’s delivery of the ” THERE WAS A FIRE FIGHT!” line…

    that scene was so stupid.

  16. Gravatar

I’m totally on board with this.

  17. Gravatar

I met Norman Reedus about 2 years ago when I was on set for a Law and Order: SVU episode and he assured me Saints 2 would be coming, but there where a bunch of legal hoops they had to jump through, glad the legal issues may be over…

  18. Gravatar

I hated Boondock Saints. Overnight was interesting. That guy is an enormous douchebag.

  19. Gravatar

Hope this makes it to theaters. Loved the first flick, even if Duffy is a tool bag.

  20. Gravatar

Dear God no… The first film was the epitome of everything that was wrong with 90s self-referential gangster flicks.

Let’s hope Duffy falls off something very high, very soon.

  21. Gravatar

I’m always skeptical of sequels and would like to
embrace the thought of second movie, but at the
same time I’m always nervous it won’t live up.

  22. Gravatar

Not only was this a great movie, it’s going to become (already is becoming) an American Classic. Couples settling in for the night will be torn between Casablanca and the Boondock Saints. That Dafoe bailed is not happy news, of course. And Rocco (and the cat) are dead, something surely needs to be done about that. But I’m sure he was frustrated with all the shit they had to shovel to push this project forward. I’ve noticed too there are some extraordinarily analytical minds contributing their opinions above. Good writers, too. But I wonder if a few of them might find better use for their Austrian-Swiss intellects tackling engineering or physics problems, or planning another World War. This is only a movie, Herr Doktors, calm yourselves. To Troy and the others, God’s blessings on the lot of ye!

  23. Gravatar

I thought Troy was forever blackballed? This seems weird.

  24. Gravatar

Boondock Saints was a decent flick - nothing more. I’m not at all excited about a sequel, especially with the film’s best character not reprising his role.

  25. Gravatar

I loved the first movie and am very excited about a second. However, there is a niggling bit in the back of my mind that because I’m so excited about it, that when (if?) it is released and I see it that I’ll be disappointed because I hyped it up too much. Does that make sense?

  26. Gravatar

Somehow this second movie needs to be made! The first was awesome and Troy Duffy has some serious potential to be great. It should come out next year on St. Patty’s Day.

  27. Gravatar

I really loved the Movie. I am not a simpleton, but I do not know why everyone is ragging on it. I thought it was very very good and I as well as some people I have talked to have been holding our breath, waiting for the sequel.

  28. Gravatar

‘Camperton’ said it best. Boondock Saints is horribly overrated. I have seen movies that I disliked, but rarely do I see movies that I actually hate and despise, Boondock Saints was one of them.

  29. Gravatar

I agree with ‘Camperton’, even if I don’t know what a ‘chachi’ is!

  30. Gravatar

ive been awaiting this, sooo exciting! but i dont see how they can make it without willem dafoe! eh, whatev! i cant wait to see either way!

  31. Gravatar

one more thing, if you dont like the movie, why are you even on this site reading the article? i dont see how if you dont like something you would be interested enough to read on … hmm

  32. Gravatar

“Not only was this a great movie, it’s going to become (already is becoming) an American Classic. Couples settling in for the night will be torn between Casablanca and the Boondock Saints.”

I mean… really? I can only hope this is sarcasm. If not, this is a highly ridiculous, not to mention amusing statement. It’s an American cult classic. At most (and I mean at MOST), people will have trouble deciding whether to watch Boondock Saints, Big Trouble in Little China, or The Warriors.

Don’t give this completely mediocre movie so much credit.

  33. Gravatar

@ Camperton - why so serious?

it’s an enjoyable popcorn flick, nothing more - but it never presents itself as anything but. it succeeds at what it is trying to do.

you say duffy ripped tarantino off, but tarantino ripped off countless others - if you don’t know that, you don’t know cinema.

  34. Gravatar

I agree with whoever said that if you hate the movie why are you even reading this. If you are from Oklahoma/Texas/Bible Belt this movie has reached cult-classic status… truly. And don’t harp on the theatrical release… it was right after Collumbine so they had trouble showing it.

The movie is interesting because it is just 2 ordinary people that got put into an extraordinary situation and happened to come out on top… and then they decide to kill people that are withoutadoubt bad people… surely everyone can relate to that. Who HASN’T thought ’someone needs to kill them; kill them all *click*’ I watched Boondock Saints last night on St. Patty’s and Green Street Hooligans, both are cult classics… at least here in Oklahoma.

Some may dislike Boondocks simply because of the religious suggestion that it’s ok to kill… others may not even realize that is why they don’t like it. But its strange that here in the bible belt no one seems to care. Then again, it is western oklahoma…. that may play a big part of it.

The movie is just fun. And that’s why people like it. Isn’t that all any good movie truly is? Enjoyable.

  35. Gravatar

Hmmm after watching Overnight, I think this could easily not happen because Duffy does something egotistical.

  36. Gravatar

YES!!!!!!!!!!!!! fuck yea that is awesome! please please please don’t deviate from the formula that u used to make the first one. i really hope that everything aside from the plot in this movie is the same as the first one. either way thank u!

  37. Gravatar

Boondock Saints was great, but Overnight was AMAZING. It is unbelievable how big a douchebag Duffy is/was. I hope he has changed his ways for the sake of a new movie (and for the sake of his friends and family). I will be excited to see BS2 if it ever makes it out.

  38. Gravatar

I absolutely loved The Boondock Saints. it is by far my favorite movie. I’ve had high hopes for a sequel since seeing the first one. I hope Trot Duffy can stay calm and collected so he can make this film. It’s a shame to see that Williem Dafoe won’t be back; he did such an amazing job in the film. But I still believe the sequel will be great without him.

  39. Gravatar

I really enjoyed this movie and still tell all my friends about it. It was unfortunate enough to be released during a national tragedy which hurt it’s box office. I also really resent Camperton’s remarks about “frat boys”. Using a tired sterotype to prove a point and making a joke about something you aren’t involved in doesn’t prove anything about your maturity. Movies are artistic and thus subjective. Everyone will have a different opinion on liking and disliking this movie. The best point so far is, if you do not like it, then why are you wasting time commenting on it. Do you really need to flame on the boards to boost your confidence?

  40. Gravatar

    f-yeah, F-yeah, f-Yeah, F-YEAH!!!

  41. Gravatar

I agree that it was a classic to the fraternity houses across the nation. I’m not saying it was a horrible film but COME ON. Putting it in the context of a cult classic has it up against some genius, historic films. It’s just not at that level. Most people know it because of the all the bullshit and tragedy associated with the film.
In my opinion, the movie ‘Overnight’ was a better movie than ‘Boondock Saints’ in terms of an interesting, dramatic story. And more tragic, as well.
When I was in college, a lot of people that I didn’t really care for were into this film. Maybe that’s what I have against it. I’m no movie snob but there are some painful scenes in ‘boondock’ that I don’t think were meant to be painful. It just wasn’t that good if you take away the interesting and dramatic story behind the project.
Like I said, that story is better than the actual film itself.

  42. Gravatar

I’m glad to see this finally taking shape. As a fan of the first film, I was really amazed of the story, the emotion, and the acting of film’s stars. I was wondering what had happen since Troy Duffy’s pitch back in 2003 that it was a sure thing. Hopefully now that Fox is backing this up, it will be upon us to watch in time for next year’s St. Patty’s Day.

  43. Gravatar

I think the movie should come out October 31st 2008 at Midnight, on that friday, because Saturday November 1st is All Saints Day.

  44. Gravatar

    O. M. F. FINALLY! I was i little boy when i first watched Boondock Saint. And I grew up waiting for the next one… *in this case II* I think this is the MOST brilliant movie EVER! From the cast to the storyline and the cinematography and even script was just awesome… It’s really sad about William Dafoe not being in the second movie and i see this as a fun challenge for Troy… But Troy Duffy is a true genius… OMF i cant wait…!

  45. Gravatar

This sounds like great news! Good for Troy Duffy! I’m always happy for an indie filmmaker who gets (another) chance. The first Boondock Saints was decent. Not great in my opinion. But after all the hoopla the film has made on DVD, it’s cool that a sequel is being made. Made it will be a trilogy. Too bad Willem won’t be back for at last a cameo though.

  46. Gravatar

Great news for Troy Duffy! Hope it becomes a trilogy!

  47. Gravatar

If sequals to Rocky and Rambo got approved how did it take this long to get All Saints Day approved

  48. Gravatar

Hells yeah. Boondock Saints is one of the most stylish and pure vigilante films ever. The haters are just dimwitted snobs trying to sound sophisticated…. Probably film students.

I don’t give a damn about Duffy’s persona. John Lennon and Jim Morrison were two of the biggest assholes ever, but I still love the Beatles and the Doors. Oliver Stone and Michael Moore are egomaniacal, insane, propagandist scumbags, but I’ve even enjoyed their films. I’m not holding my breath, but I’d be very psyched to see All Saints Day.

  49. Gravatar

not only was saints a great movie it was inspiring to young men looking to make films (such as myself). but a saints two seems genius, say what u want about duffy but he made a classic. and oh yeah about him rippin off tarantino whare do you think he looked when he started. anybody hear of MARTIN SCORSES

  50. Gravatar

HOLY CRAP!!! Its about FREAKIN time….Now if I can only get a Snatch 2 sequel :P

  51. Gravatar

SA!NT you are such a loser ahahaha

  52. Gravatar

BeeR, you are such a loser! bahahahah……………………… anyway, just kidding, I CAN’T WAIT for this!

  53. Gravatar

Im tired wait to hear this crap. Show me some freakin production Tony!!! Show me som freakin kind of Trailer. None of thse hallow words.

  54. Gravatar

    Great news for Troy Duffy

  55. Gravatar

I worked on the Saints and Overnight. Overnight is a half truth edited by two angry people. Troy is no angel but far from what has been said.

Heard from him and Bob Marley “Greenly” today. Shooting starts Aug. 25 in Toronto.

  56. Gravatar

this sounds incredible… like everyone is sayin willem dafoe will be missed and to the casablanca comparison above i know that casablanca is one of the best movies of all time but this movie just plain kicked ass and the sequel will too… also hoping bob marley is in all saints day

  57. Gravatar

The Saints, for me, was a dark comedy at its best. Stereotypes galore and the personalities were just magnetic. I loved it! In fact, I just watched the DVD again a couple nights ago. The deleted scenes crack me up.

Saints II could be magic. Yes, Willem Dafoe being absent will have an effect. But I’ll take it. Should be interesting to see how Duffy picks the story up where it left off.

Time for a “Rule of Wrist” for some of these tards up here…

  58. Gravatar

Damn…ITS ABOUT TIME. Only question, are they looking for help because I’ll do anything to assist the creation of this film. Hell even if I’m just an extra I’d love it

  59. Gravatar

I am stoked about this movie. I have watched the Saints the last few years on St. Pat’s Day due to my Irish roots and has become a classic in my collection. All of the people that aren’t looking forward to it due to their distaste in the first one: what are you even doing on here then even reading about Saints 2 if you didn’t like the first or even want to give the second a chance? Anyways, I can’t wait for this to come out and look forward to see what Duffy can do with a bigger budget and hopefully a better release date.

  60. Gravatar

I honestly think that what made The Boondock Saints to popular was Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery’s well acted brother relationship, and Willem Dafoe’s brilliant, over-the-top character (I’m sad he won’t be in the sequel). After watching the movie again and again, I realized why I loved it so much was because I loved the characters.

Honestly, the movie has a sketchy plot and plenty of cliches to go around, but it was the characters that made it endearing. The MacMannus brothers remind you of people you would actually know, and I would love to see them on the screen again.

As for it actually happening: we’ll see. If not happens in three years, I’d give up hope.

  61. Gravatar

Seeing how I am a Boondock Saints SUPERFAN, I can’t wait for this movie to come out. I hope everything comes through !!! =)
