The Boondock Saints 2 gets a Greenlight?!

The Boondock Saints

Troy Duffy has a big announcement for St. Patrick’s Day: Boondock Saints 2 might be happening after all. According to Duffy, Sony Picture Studios has greenlit The Boondock Saints: All Saints Day, and the original cast (with the exception of Willem Dafoe) are excited to return. Duffy claims that the film will begin shooting Summer 2008. He made the announcement in a video posted on his YouTube account earlier today (thanks to /Film reader IronMonger for sending this in). The video was quickly removed from the video sharing site, but can be seen below.

After having seen Overnight, a documentary on the making of the original Boondock Saints and the meltdown of Troy Duffy, I’m not quite sure this will actually happen (yes, even after an official announcement). I am however a huge fan of the first film. Many believed the original screenplay was on par with Quentin Tarantino’s early work, the finished film - not as much (again, see Overnight). Despite poor reviews and non-existent box office (Mojo lists a domestic total of $30,471), The Boondock Saints quickly became a cult classic among film fanatics.

Duffy announced in March 2002 that a second film had found financial backing and would have twice the budget of the original film, and “experience a theatrical release.” But legal problems delayed the project again and again.

Discuss: Do you want to see a Boondock Saints sequel? Will it ever actually happen?

I think I just came! I was going through old video's and watched the original again today. Then decided to Google it and just found out about part 2. Please oh please let this be true, was it released, will it be released and when? It was a great movie and of course Willem Was brilliant as always. Sean and Norman also played their parts amazingly. This will be a great movie even w/ the absence of Willem.

For you people bashing the original movie.... there are two catagories of you.... people who truly didn't enjoy the movie (everyone's tastes are different) or people who suck the teet of advertising and critics. In my opinion, the writing was excellent, the acting was excellent, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is easily in my top 5 of movies ever. If they can sequel and stay true, I will be happy to watch/buy/enjoy it.

My father introduced me to this film after it was released on video (sounds so long ago now "video") when he picked it up at the movie store on a whim. I'll never forget when it was revealed that Defoe was gay. My Dad had to bite his tounge to not give that away. After the movie, I said to myself Wow! I and my family and freinds that have now quoted this movie over and over will be awaiting the follow up. I hope the second is as good as the first. Rocco and the cat will never be replaced, but I'm sure I will love the second just because the first has been such a major part of so many parties and fun since I've saw the original. Lone Live the F_ck Asses of the world! Give'em Hell Saints!

If you don't like something then go play somewhere else. This movie was and still is one of the best movies I have yet to see. "Tarantino" I have never liked one film he has made, but that is not who we are talking about here is it? I have watched everyone of his movies, and you cant trade one style for another. They are very different. Everyone has a different opinion. Oh never mind I see, it seems to me that whom ever is on the other side of here has tried and failed and now someone has stole your spot light. This is a great film and is becoming a classic everyday. I give it as a gift to everyone I know. By the way the more you make a scene and criticize this film the more famous you are making it! So thanks to you it will rise up the charts even better!!

Personally, I am a pretty big movie buff and Boondock Saints is one of my favorite movies. I CANNOT WAIT until the sequel, I'll be happy if its half as good as the first Boondock Saints. As far as the first one, is the talent the best? NO. Was the directing the best? NO. In the end, its still a great movie IMO and I always recommend it to people and they already return good comments.

If you care to seek out a film like Boondocks then fine... that's your choice. I personally have never heard of this film until some kid in a screenwriting class told me about it. I was born and raised in Hollywood and personally, i feel that it's jack-asses like Troy that bring Hollywood down and give it a bad name. I was hanging with the upper-most echelon of Hollywood in 97, 98, 99, 2000 and I had never even heard of this idiot even then when all this was going down. The guy has no class and sorry to say the guy has no style or talent. I will not even bother watching docks part 1 or 2. However I have seen Overnight and thought it was fantastic.

Boondock Saints is the best movie on earth, anyone who says different should send me a list of their favorite movies, how dare you attack something for reasons that are stupid. If you drink beer then this movie is awesome, drink to the F***'s and you will have a blast. I watched this movie once a week for 5 months straight. there are 246 F***'s thats 246 drinks. Praise Troy Duffy. The sequal will be a BLOCKBUSTER!!!!!!! Money will be made just like it was made on the first without even being in theatres!!!

All I have to say is: So what if Troy Duffy is "drunk, racist, and anti semetic?" His personal life doesn't really matter all that much. He still made a great movie. And most people who can make one great movie can make another. I just struggle to see why people think his personality matters. Most famous musicians are drunks AND drug addicts. Do we say that they are worth nothing? No. So why should we say the same for movie directors? All I'm saying is, people need to lighten up. If we shunned everything that came from people without the best personality, a lot of good stuff in this world would have never existed.

The people who have seen Boondock Saints and liked it,come from all walks of life,so yes it does have classic status. True art is a metaphor for life, the good and the bad. Looking forward to this film.
  • Matt
This movie was one of the best cult classics I've every seen and I'm extremely excited that they have announced to do another one, hope fully it lives up to the first although many sequels do not I've got high hopes for this one.
  • ASHLEY JEWELL
WELL, I AM PERSONALLY VERY EXCITED TO SEE THE SEQUEL! I FELL IN LOVE WITH THE FIRST MOVIE, AND AM ESTATIC THAT THERE WILL BE A SECND!
  • Woland
I know Troy very well and can tell you the movie is happening, shooting starts in October. All signs point to a huge validation here for Troy and an equally popular film. Say what you want about him, his movie ended up being the very most rare of movies, what they call an evergreen, the money and the fans just don't die. You try creating a cult hit sometime.
  • Mandy
For those that have carried on bad mouthing the movie and Troy Duffy please do explaine why you bothered watching the first one or why you would bother looking to see if there will be anouther one. There is no point in your bad mouthing because all that proves is you have a small mind and can't make your own movie watching decision and you didn't know how to turn the first one off. If you guys didn't like the movie stop trying to find out if there is another one comeing out.
  • rob
OMG I hope not. Jeez once was too much. Can't understand the attention this train wreck gets. It's a bust and so is Troy the second coming Duffy
  • Wobin Of Wocksley
Finally, even here in the Netherlands people can't stop watching this film. Can hardly wait for the next one. Let's hope that this time it will actually come. Well anyway to all the guys whining about how bad the first one was. NOBODY FORCED YOU TO WATCH IT, we live in a free world. If you dont like what you're seeing. JUST TURN THE TV OFF or walk out the movie theatre.

Anyway i don't care who Troy Duffy is, i don't care what he is, what he does, what he did, as long as he makes the second film.

For all of you who didn't like the movie... DON'T WATCH IT YOU JACK ASSES. Nobody is interested in the opinion of any of you people that have not only no imagination, but no sense of humor. I bet you people are the ones that watched The Matrix and walked out going "I don't understand. That ending was sorry." It takes not only imagination but heart to get into some movies. Obviously you nay-sayers have neither. I so GO TROY!!!!!!! Bring the new one on!!!! I can hardly wait!!!!
  • Greg Zorn
Make this happen for crying out loud we have all been waiting to long...
  • Dr. XXTX
Do you really think that anybody in their right mind after seeing "Overnight" the infamous documentary in which we see Troy Duffy's true colors would actually follow through on giving this drunk, racist, anti semetic, amateur director another shot? Do people really think this guy is the real deal? He stabs his closest friends in the back, turns his own on his brother and we are expected to go support this guy and his mediocre vision? Hmm. Wake up people, this is Troy Duffy!!!! Go watch overnight! I did, and that's why I am writing this. Oh yeah, and another thing... Just one more small thing... Troy next time you want to run your mouth make sure the cameras are off.

I am no blogger; however, I bought a Boondock Saints dvd for $4, not knowing anything about it. ($4, you own it, not rent it.) I laughed my head off! I still laugh, even knowing it line by line. "...shit up Renei, I can't walk to the store without running into nine guys you..." The deleted scenes, esp. the onw with "ma calling from home..." I DO want to see a sequel, just to what what happens. I'll enjoy it because I won't take it tii seriously. GET IT?! It is one of my all-time favorites: it ios what it is. RELAX

i loved the first, and hopefully this will be just as good
  • Mandy
I loved Boondock saints and can't wait for the next one. The characters did make this film as good as it was, and it will be interesting to see how well Duffy can better the sequel. I have never been big on sequels as they have never lived up to the first, however I do believe that Duffy will be able to exceed our expectations.
  • Scottsman
I speak for everyone. Yes everyone in that breaths a single breath of my air.

Boondock Saints is a classic. Even the people that hate, still find interest in this movie and comment on how much they hate it. It is going to be remembered for the rest of our lives whether we hate it or not.

I will say it was a excellent movie for a small budget film.

All the people commenting with your negativeness, get the h*** out DEBBY DOWNERS!!!!!

Seeing how I am a Boondock Saints SUPERFAN, I can't wait for this movie to come out. I hope everything comes through !!! =)

I honestly think that what made The Boondock Saints to popular was Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flannery's well acted brother relationship, and Willem Dafoe's brilliant, over-the-top character (I'm sad he won't be in the sequel). After watching the movie again and again, I realized why I loved it so much was because I loved the characters.

Honestly, the movie has a sketchy plot and plenty of cliches to go around, but it was the characters that made it endearing. The MacMannus brothers remind you of people you would actually know, and I would love to see them on the screen again.

As for it actually happening: we'll see. If not happens in three years, I'd give up hope.
  • Ben Y.
I am stoked about this movie. I have watched the Saints the last few years on St. Pat's Day due to my Irish roots and has become a classic in my collection. All of the people that aren't looking forward to it due to their distaste in the first one: what are you even doing on here then even reading about Saints 2 if you didn't like the first or even want to give the second a chance? Anyways, I can't wait for this to come out and look forward to see what Duffy can do with a bigger budget and hopefully a better release date.
  • Sleante
Damn...ITS ABOUT TIME. Only question, are they looking for help because I'll do anything to assist the creation of this film. Hell even if I'm just an extra I'd love it
  • Mister B
The Saints, for me, was a dark comedy at its best. Stereotypes galore and the personalities were just magnetic. I loved it! In fact, I just watched the DVD again a couple nights ago. The deleted scenes crack me up.

Saints II could be magic. Yes, Willem Dafoe being absent will have an effect. But I'll take it. Should be interesting to see how Duffy picks the story up where it left off.

Time for a "Rule of Wrist" for some of these tards up here...
  • Ryan
this sounds incredible... like everyone is sayin willem dafoe will be missed and to the casablanca comparison above i know that casablanca is one of the best movies of all time but this movie just plain kicked ass and the sequel will too... also hoping bob marley is in all saints day
  • Tom Chabot
I worked on the Saints and Overnight. Overnight is a half truth edited by two angry people. Troy is no angel but far from what has been said.

Heard from him and Bob Marley "Greenly" today. Shooting starts Aug. 25 in Toronto.
  • Great news for Troy Duffy
