Buried in this report covering yesterday’s Wizard World convention in L.A. is the news via a panel that Samuel L. Jackson may not have a cameo as Marvel character Nick Fury in Iron Man after all. Nearly a year ago AICN reported the casting news as a definite for the summer blockbuster, and since then everyone from Avi Arad to Jackson to director Jon Favreau has reluctantly nodded “yes.” Even IMDB and Wikipedia have it listed as fact. Top that!
The panel, which consisted of Wizard’s Ricky Purdin and Toyfare’s Adam Tracy, maintained that Jackson is still Nick Fury and seemed to imply that the footage with Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. might appear elsewhere. CHUD just sprinkled their ellipses, and we’ll throw out a giant …but where?! as well. Moreover, the panel confirmed that a crossover between The Incredible Hulk and Iron Man is still happening as rumored.
So, would the Fury cameo pop up on the Iron Man DVD? That’s no way to launch a character that has an individual action tent pole film scheduled in the next couple years. Might it be used in promotional materials? Promoting what? Coolness? Will it appear in The Incredible Hulk? On one hand that seems like too much “Uma, Oprah” crossover, but could turn out great. Cutting room floor? Gasp. Somewhere Jackson chews on a cigar and laughs at his laptop. More on this if it develops…
Discuss: Whaaa happen? Throw some guesses in the Easter basket. And who’s the ideal director to realize a Nick Fury flick starring Jackson?

i hope sam jackson as nick fury gets scrapped all together. nick fury wasn’t black until recently, in the ultimate universe (a terrible venture). im curious, where are all my fellow strict-nitpicking-die-hard-by-the-book fanboys? maybe we’re getting soft in our old age.
ideal fury: russel crowe (fury is ruthless/tough as nails, not cool/hip)
ideal director: terrence malick (ala the thin red line)

…Jackson is the new Fury, Ultimates brought Fury back to the front, recently he’s just been well, nowhere! Ultimate Fury is just as good and just as canon.

@ OC
I agree that Jackson isn’t the best choice. If it’s Jackson, the Nick Fury movie needs a director like Ridley Scott to keep the tone serious.
If we’re tossing coins into a fountain, I’d go with Brolin (give the dude an action vehicle). Top choice? Daniel Day-Lewis (hey, he’s beyond the fountain even, but OC picked Malick (!)).

Blacks deserve to get awesome roles and so i support the idea of Sam Jackson playing Nick Fury.
White people have had enough glory in comic book movies.

Here’s my real dork side coming out
Nicholas Brendon, ala Buffy season7 and the season 8 comics (he played Xander on the show and now wears an eye patch)

(that was a joke, btw)

i believe if nick fury has any chance he needs a top notch action director. my picks are john woo who made windtalkers face off and mission impossible 2 or peter berg who did the action highs the rundown and the kingdom and also is doing hancock with will smith .
as for jackson, hey its still better than david hasselhoff.

damn you hunter…brolin is a perfect fukin choice! uhh, of course it’s totally what i was gonna say first, yeah that’s it, i was gonna say it first… ;p
(ddl + malick?!?! u & me hunter, we’re opening up a casting agency right now!!)
i got nothing against black actors as our comic book onscreen heroes, i just always pull for cannon. but allynd brings up the great point that (i hate to ever give ultimates ANY credit) but it absolutely did bring fury to the front. i guess i’m just not seeing jackson at all. i saw his military chops in basic and xxx, and fury deserves better.

…Can you hear the crickets?

Aside from the fact that Jackson is the obvious choice for the ULTIMATE version of him, I too agree that Brolin would make an awesome choice. And seeing as how he played along and was in Grindhouse I’m sure he’d be up for it.

Downey told MTV that one of the “Iron Man” cameos would only appear in the end credits. Wanna bet that it’s Sam?

Sam Jackson(’s likeness) made the Nick Fury character.
Whenever I think Jackson I think Tarantino, though I think Wachowski’s could do an interesting job as well.

How will the world of Nick Fury and S.H.I.E.L.D. fit into the real-to-life settings of both Iron Man & The Incredible Hulk? Will will see hover-ships (is that what they were called?), laser cannons and assorted cool gadgets on display? Perhaps the Samuel L. Jackson cameo has him recruiting Starks Enterprises to help build the S.H.I.E.L.D. arial HQ (is that what it was called?) thereby setting up a quick introduction to either a Nick Fury solo (which I hope they won’t EVER go with) or a cool Avengers flick.

Nonsense. Sam Jackson plays Nick Fury in iron Man. Just not in the preview or premiere screenings. Lying In The Gutters has the scoop - http://www.comicbookresources.com/?page=article&id=16195

Thats why I hate comic book films, being someone who has collected them since I was eight I have a love for these stories and characters and I hate it when they take liberties with them.I can’t believe they wents as far as using Sams likeness in the ultimates version of the comic to justifiy the change and not piss anyone off instead of actually finding an older white male to portray him.Why can’t these filmmakers just follow the comics and stop changing things? Can someone answer that!!!

June 14th, 2008 at 3:42 pm

June 17th, 2008 at 7:13 am
Ummm…. is it just me… or did no one see the scene with Nick Fury after the credits in Iron Man?
Guess he is gonna be black.

The comments here are RIDONKULOUS!
I can understand the idea that Fury should be white, but I think IM more up in arms about that non-actor, Sam Jackson, being in the role. Ultimates was RETARDED to use his likeness to connote toughness and its sad to see Marvel stooping to the lowest common denominator. To me anyway, Fury is not iconic and it doesn’t matter if he’s white or black as long as a good actor plays him. Sadly, Jackson ISNT a good actor!
