Andy Serkis in TinTin

Last year it was announced that Peter Jackson and Steven Spielberg would be directing a trilogy of 3D performance capture films based on the popular comic book series The Adventures of TinTin created by Belgian artist Hergé. However, it was never revealed who would direct the first film. Andy Serkis, who will play Captain Haddock in the series, revealed to IndieLondon that Spielberg will in fact be tackling the series first.

“In fact tomorrow I’m flying out to start on Tintin. Steven Spielberg is directing the first one, and then Peter Jackson is doing the second. The bulk of the shoot starts in September but things got a little bit moved around after the writers’ strike.”

This means that Jackson will likely film the second film in the series. British scribe Steven Moffat penned the screenplay adaptation. The first film is currently scheduled to hit theaters in 2009 (although that could easily change).

I know TinTin is a beloved icon and everything, but those seem like some awfully big names to be producing it. I never would have imagined it would turn into a big-budget project. It’ll be interesting to find out what Andy Serkis is like in it.

Honestly, if they can capture the vibe of the books, these films are going to be amazing. I was captivated by these stories as a kid.

I am trying to figure out which will come first, Spielberg has a lot on his plate this year.

He will be hopefully going into production with Lincoln, and a lot of talk has been generated regarding his Chicago 7 film. And now things regarding Tin Tin seem to be evolving.

I wonder how dedicated Spielberg is to completing this project and doing it well, Especially with Peter Jackson right next to him, I hope it’s not CGI heavy though. A story such as Tin Tin would look brilliant without it being covered up by green screen. I have high hopes though, Spielberg does things his own way and has a lot on his plate, so only time will tell. At least we have Indiana Jones coming soon to keep us occupied until the next Spielberg hit.

The original script that was handed around had Tintin running all over Europe like Indiana Jones in search of a boat. That has obviously changed but I doubt the intent has: Tintin will be a young Indy. Sounds good to me!

Damn posted a whole comment and it got whiped out. Dang!

In a nutshell - Since they’re going the mocap route I hope they utilize the technology to the fullest instead of abusing it like Zemeckis.
