The official website for this September’s Punisher re-do Punisher: War Zone is now online. The site is pretty bare right now, offering a mere two stills from the film, but the presentation is heavy on tone, with hushed police sirens, faint voices and a buzzing drone of dread all present as gunshots pierce glass and guns smoke on the image above. Actor Ray Stevenson (Rome) definitely has the character’s stare of forthcoming death down. Check it out, and there’s an option to register for updates as well.
Buzz on the Lionsgate/Marvel film is not the greatest, a lot of that due to the last craptastic Punisher with Tom Jane, but hearing that War Zone uses all of the fuel in its R-rated tank, is set in a gritty metropolis and not Floriduh, and then peeping the site makes me hopeful. And the fact that the director, Lexi Alexander (Hooligans) is a cool gal and a bad ass in her own right (re: karate champion)…I dunno, it seems to be clicking to me.

Tom Jane sucked as The Punisher and Travolta as the villain, let’s just say, “You could be a stage actor” (chest bump!?). How stupid was that? The Punisher needs to be badass and I don’t know anything about this other guy, but he better be good.
The first one was so weak that I was embarassed to be a Punisher fan.

Ledger? No, that was positive. My coverage of the viral marketing? No, that is positive (and I’m not too big on the trend of viral website contagion). I like Christopher Nolan’s work, I fucking campaigned via my section in my college paper to get Christian Bale the role of Batman for months.
The only things I have really thrashed thus far on Slashfilm are Lost Boys: The Tribe, Michael Bay remaking Rosemary’s Baby, Platinum Dunes doing Elm Street, and Brett Ratner. I was let down by the latest trailers for Crystal Skull and Wall-E and said as much. I have high expectations for those films. Big whup. And yet I have a dozen turds up in the Internet rafters yelling “you’re a hater.” Or if I write something saying how much I dig Tarantino, I get “I’m going to come to your house with a bat” and given, my QT post was purposely a little silly and cheeseball, but so what? It was a weekend post when nothing was hitting.
What has happened to geek culture? It’s, like, born again, schizo and loves/defends every piece of shit movie ever made these days instead of analyzing it for flaws like true geek badassery. Part of the reason why /Film is awesome imo is because we, including you guys and gals, have strong opinions on movies, talent and filmmakers. There is small but vocal minority of commenting here that sounds like it’s via a fan club for studio press releases. Vomit.
This site is populist and it’s DIY. That is why I choose to work for it and read it. I don’t care if you dislike Rambo or Cloverfield, or my reviews of them, at all. Let me repeat: At All. I want to hear why you didn’t like them and hated them. I like strong opinions, even obnoxiously strong, and I haven’t ever said otherwise and if I did it was clearly a joke. (The exception is Lost Boys 2, which I do not think should be defended, but the original is one of my favorite films and I have said that here. And even then, fine. Whatevs.)
I’m not going to start retorting to every dumb-harsh Hunter diss like Moriarty on AICN, b/c I honestly do not care. This post is even a little too ego-y for me. And I find most of the “you’re a hater” comments sort of surreal and hilarious. Hate can be good on the Internet, I get it. But it’s starting to take away from enjoying the site for some, b/c it’s not even clever hate and there’s really no friggin’ reason for it.
