AICN pointed out a press release today from MGM that lists a new RoboCop movie alongside upcoming franchise films already in development like Quantum of Solace, The Thomas Crown Affair 2 (with RoboCop director Paul Verhoeven on board) and everyone’s favorite future films, The Pink Panther 2 and 3. Here’s the excerpt…

MGM is planning an exciting fall and winter release schedule. In partnership with Sony Pictures Entertainment, MGM will bring new installments of two of its tentpole franchises — the new James Bond movie QUANTUM OF SOLACE and Steve Martin in PINK PANTHER 2. MGM will also release United Artists’ international thriller VALKYRIE, starring Tom Cruise on October 3. With the appointment of Parent, MGM will enter its new phase of evolution by focusing on its major movie franchises highlighted by JAMES BOND and PINK PANTHER sequels, THE HOBBIT, THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR 2, THE OUTER LIMITS, ROBOCOP, DEATH WISH and FAME, among others.

A redo of Fame was just announced, so besides The Outer Limits, these are all go’s at this point. Strange that we haven’t heard much as of late sans a few whispers here and there about a remake of RoboCop. It still seems like a safe bet that MGM would revamp and remake the first film, rather than pick up where 1993’s pretty bleh RoboCop 3 left off. In fact, this is a tent pole franchise and character that have almost dropped off the pop culture radar, with only a sweded trailer of the original 1987 classic bloodbath in Be Kind Rewind coming to mind.

I’m not against the idea of rebooting the character in films so long as MGM doesn’t “teenify” the still shocking violence, sick humor and sharp satire of the original. And hopefully Peter Weller, who played the pork of the future in the first two flicks, gets offered a role in the film as well.

Discuss: Does the idea of a RoboCop reboot scare you? Who should direct it? And, oooh, RoboCop Versus The Terminator?

    Brett Ratner :)

I have had a new Robocop movie in the back of my mind for a long time. I think it could be cool, of course with all movies, if done right.

I would enjoy Robocop is they let Frank Miller in on the action.

As for the pink panther… am I the only one that liked the first one?

  4. Gravatar

Yep you’re the only one that liked the first one.

RE;RoboIT-administrator - as long as Paul Verhoeven is allowed to direct or someone with a little artistic flair and less of an a commercial minded attitude, I’ll be there first night!

Frank Miller is an interesting choice for Robocop. MGM just needs to make better movies…

They’re going to “rice-out” the new Robocop, like they did the T3 cyborg. He’s gonna have blue LED’s everywhere. Pin striped on his armor and kill people while Soulja Boy plays in the background.

Robocop will be protecting the MTV generation from Rated R films and language.

    This will end badly.

I’d wish for a complete remake, not a sequel. With today’s CGI etc, the effects would be spectacular; but keep RoboCop a person, not some walking CGI PoS.

  8. Gravatar

Miller is a good choice. Sense of humor is a little different though.

Robocop is one of the most entertaining sci-fi films from the 80’s. They can’t simply update the storyline to a more modern setting and expect it to make the same impact. It’ll need to be revamped with a script that’s able to stay relevant with its social-political-economical comments on society today while keeping the pace exciting and interesting. If it succeed I’d even sit through a complete stop-motion ED209 sequence over a CGI ADD headache like Transformers.

I enjoy Frank Miller as much as the next guy but he wrote Robocop 2 and 3. Why would you want him involved unless Robert Rodrigues was also involved.

  11. Gravatar

If they made Die Hard 4 PG-13, they’ll do it to RoboCop.
Hopefully much like Die Hard 4, when they release it on
DVD it will be unrated with plenty of “F” bombs.
    Yippie-ki-yah Motherf….you get the point.

It never got better than Murphy getting blown away limb by limb with a shot gun….If they can top that… Like maybe Murphy getting anally raped first ie: Pulp Fiction.
I say….GO FOR IT> But I want it hardcore torture porn violent by “faces of meth” scab heads…( fuck the fantasy drug Bliss…make it real meth heads..they’re scarier, I know cuz I have to deal with them at my job.)

    …and a Hard “R” rating.

    :P

is it possible to re-imagine robocop for our age? not so gangland-gritty …. maybe a islamic robocop? that’s going to raise some interesting issues!

Good Point! But then again they might realise that kids are getting older faster and release something with the same tone as the first two. Nowadays, the younger audience might not think the first 2 Robocop films were ultraviolent. It was when I was younger and I’m only 26.

    @Clarence Somerset

    “maybe a islamic robocop”

Or better yet… Murphy is in the world trade center, We see the scene where the terrorist literally fly a plane into Murphy…( Topping the shot gun scene of the first film)… and they find his carcass in the rubble and rebuild him and send him to Afghanistan to find Osama bin Laden. But then after a while in the sun with time to think…..Robo cop realizes that the terrorists who flew the plane into the world trade center were actually from Saudi Arabia and Robo-Cop goes on a bad ass fact finding mission that leads him back to the White House….
In the final battle , Robo cop Corners Dick Chaney in the white house and says..

“Come quietly or there will be… trouble.”

Dick Cheney shoot’s Robo-Cop point blank in the face with a shotgun..

As Robo Cop lies on the floor …Cheney says…

“I AM Osama Bin Laden!” and pulls back his mask ( like Tom Cruise in mission impossible )

I would pay to see that.

the guys who do the crank movies would do a good gritty robocop. not sure if i’d want their hyper-reality style, but who knows it might fit perfect.

  17. Gravatar

i agree with redandjony, i want to see more gushing blood and drug addicts getting ripped apart. definitely a hard R rating, none of that bullshit soft R rating. thats for pussies

    @ orange cinema

Yeah. I agree, Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor could definitely get the exploitation satire right for RoboCop, while giving action fans their adrenaline and the studio a box office hit. Good choice(s).

I’d love to see those guys do a sequel to The Last Boy Scout too, but only if Shane Black wrote the screenplay. And only if pigs with wings smoked pot, too, yeah, I know.

    @ Clarence

    RoboCop: Dubai Vacation? I’m sold.

Honestly I don’t think there should be a new Robocop. I grew up watching rated R movies Robocop and I will always have a special place in my heart for it. It’s a good movie, a damn good movie in fact. Great story, great action, clever dialogue, and plenty of blood and guts to boot. As if that wasn’t enough, the movie was a brilliant social satire. I think the wit and sense of humor would be lost in the translation, as it was in the two sequels.

  20. Gravatar

    Yea sure why not?

  21. Gravatar

It’s great to see a lot of fresh ideas coming out of the writers’ strike.

  22. Gravatar

PETER WELLER IN THE OLD MAN ROLE WOULD BE THE SHIZ!

  23. Gravatar

I don’t see any reason why Weller can’t reprise the role. Robocop’s flesh parts are still flesh and I think if there was any reality to it he should be looking older also. 60 year old Robocop.

  24. Gravatar

A remake COULD be OK if done properly, I think…Though I could be wrong. The original was classic…I just hope they don’t ruin it…

  25. Gravatar

I just hope they don’t change the design of the costume too much. … Why fix something that isn’t broke?
