Does big time studio director Brett Ratner lie around the Grotto half-naked with Hugh Hefner and his Bunnies while searching through ancient Valiant comic books for his next franchise? If not, did an assistant bring him a copy of Harbinger and if so, why not a copy of Turok Dinosaur Hunter or X-O Manowar instead? I mean, at least those forgotten Valiant series had snazzy holographic covers. The world may never know or care.

Ratner (X-Men: The Last Stand), who is currently toying around with a Hefner biopic entitled Playboy, is attached to direct a Harbinger feature film for Paramount Pictures, with MTV Films circling the project as well. The discontinued ’90s comic series followed a group of angst-stricken teenagers called Harbingers who had superpowers, the catch being that these teens’ powers had to be unlocked by more experienced “omega” harbingers. Conflict arises when one teen Harbinger must face his omega mentor, an evaaal industrialist.

“The movie is in the vein of a young ‘Blade Runner,’ as this 17-year- old gifted kid helps other kids tap into these parts of their brains,” said producer Alexandra Milchan.

A “new, young Blade Runner” aside, reportedly one reason why The Rat took interest in the series is that he wants to create a (possibly suck-worthy) comic book film franchise from the ground up. According to Variety, Valiant Comics is set for a comeback after its extensive library was purchased by a private company that will apparently kick-start the better known titles. I’m guessing Harbinger will be one of those, though it definitely wasn’t the most popular Valiant comic when it was around.

Discuss: Only one person can comment on this post and that is the one dude/lady out there who has been waiting for an unlikely Harbinger movie for more than a decade. Dude/lady, Slashfilm is really happy for you, comment away all of your hibernating excitement.

  • Valiant was the top of my nerd pile way back in the day, but a Shadowman movie would be ten hundred percent radder if you ask me.

At least this couldn't suck any more than the FF movies.
  • I mean, it easily could...brett ratner's directing it.

Hunter is right about the randomness of the whole thing. Why Harbinger? Of all of the unadapted comic book property gold mines out there this just seems too random.

I have to say this makes perfect sense to me, Valiant comics are pretty much the best stories left to be adapted from comic books. the early harbinger books are a fantastic read and very cinematic. doesnt suprise me that they are looking at a big franchise but i am suprised that its harbinger rather than XO, ninjak, rai, bloodshot or the others. this could be a truly great film. color me interested.
  • Brian
Don't "color me interested" since this piece of shit is attached to directing. This just seems lame and i'm not sure who would be excited about this collaboration. I'd rather watch Rush Hour 15 then another comic book adaption by a shitty director.

While I would much rather see an X-O Manowar movie, I'll be very happy to see any Valiant property back in comics, on the big screen, or on the small screen at home. Just make it a GOOD movie. That's all we ask.

There are comic books from the 1990's that got big budget movies before the Valiant books. Comics that didn't sell nearly as well. It's about time Valiant got a turn. The early Harbinger books had low print runs for the day, people who think they've read Harbinger probably read #29 or something. Try #1 through #7 people!

You get dap for that first paragraph alone.

onedude i agree. check out the harbinger: the beginning hardcover. you will be very suprised about the high quality of the story.

This is GREAT news!!! I am an original valiant freak from the 90s. Harbinger makes perfect since as the first movie produced as it has been hinted that the Eternal Warrior, Time Walker, and Armstrong were the first of the harbingers and Magnus was one of the last. SO introducing the HArbingers this way makes perfect sense.
  • I'm happy with any Valiant book being made. Even if it was Armorines, I'd still watch it. Of all the thousands of comics I have, the Valiants are the most important to me. It's one of the few comic book worlds where the timeline was nearly perfect from title to title (and crossovers were done amazingly!).

I just hope that, if this is successful even with Rat Bastard directing, more Valiant titles can be put to film.

    Shadowman would be amazing.

Valiant still holds a special place in my heart. This could be the cornerstone of something great.

These books were pretty hot for all the right reasons (other than "hologram covers"): Solid, TIGHT storytelling, believeable characters and artwork that contributed to, rather than distracting from, the tale. I think that this could work and be a very successful franchise, so long as the movie can make us care about these characters as much as the books did 15 years ago, or so.

  • Has anyone here gone back and read the Valiant comics in the last couple of years? I tried, and was disappointed. The storytelling was very solid for its day, but the ante has been upped in the passing years, and some of my favorite titles just don't hold up to current standards.

My favorite part of the company was their ability to have a tight timeline, where you could actually see things happening in different parts of the universe at the same time, regardless of their effect on each other.

Sadly, about the same time Turok came out, that started falling apart.

Oh god, I'm such a nerd.

I re-read Unity and Harbinger recently and was blown away by how they hold up. Unity especially is better than anything new from the last few years...even sinestro corps!
  • Gouldie
This is AWESOME! Harbinger was a great book back when Jim Shooter and David Lapham were working on it so I hope they use their work as inspiration for the movie.

Better yet - have Jim Shooter write the movie! :)

    Chris
  • Yeah, maybe the stuff I re-read was too far into the franchise to be good. I think it was near the Image crossover, which seemed cool at the time, but looking back is probably close to the shark-jumping point for me.

But really, why screw with Harbinger when you've got Shadowman and Archer/Armstrong at your fingertips?
  • The Rat graphic was way funnier, by the way. And not racist at all, unless you're oversensitive.

Now if his last name was Smith, and you put a rat graphic up, I could see the complaint.
  • Wow! Harbinger is right on there with my favorite comics of all time.
I will eagerly await the release of a Harbinger movie and will be first in line. Very cool!

I hope this turns out well. if ratner stays true to the original story, he should come out with a good movie. its built around story, and not just art, so character development is already included.

Brett Ratner's "directing" duties for the Harbinger film should be limited to shouting "action" and "cut" and even then, only after Jim Shooter gives him the appropriate nod. Harbinger was such a great series and I am very apprehensive after what Mr. Ratner did with X-Men 3. A franchise like X-Men can survive a couple of disappointing portrayals but for something as short lived (yet awesome) as Harbinger, someone should really do it justice.
