The final theatrical one-sheet for Jon Favreau’s Iron Man has hit the web. I’m not a big fan of the floating head aesthetic, and this is kind of an off-shoot of that overused marketing style. But at the same time I also understand that you can’t just sell the movie with a bad ass photo of Iron Man. The movie studio is playing it smart and hedging their bets by putting some sparkle out there to attract the non-comicbook geek masses.
Update: The poster is not the final poster after all. Cinematical just posted a second new poster, which can be seen below. I prefer thedark Star Wars type set-up of the one above.

Discuss: What do you think of the new Iron Man poster?

Its like that Transformers poster with Prime, a smaller Megatron and a bolt of light dividing the sheet. Not as good as the other ‘floating head’ posters but we need one with all the characters together.
But u bet TDK and Hulk can’t get away with such posters. I guess this poster serves the purpose of telling fresh audiences that Hey! Its not just about a dude in a superhero suit. We’ve got genuine thespians here! 2 Oscar winners and 2 badass actors.

I don’t think it is good, but if they made it using just the Ironman suit in a black background, everyone would think it is Spiderman. They probably added the heads to show some differences. But the planes and big robot in the right side look pretty lame, IMO.

terrible. would have been better if it was iron man is that pose… that suit design looks fucking fantastic
March 6th, 2008 at 9:44 pm
just iron man i mean
March 6th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
Can anyone say The Rocketeer?
March 6th, 2008 at 9:49 pm
This looks cool to me looks like a classic comic book cover I could see this being used to sell the comic adaptation of the movie dont know what you douches see

Granted Iron Man is not Spider-Man, or Superman, and doesn’t share the universal recognition that those characters enjoy. That being said, this poster isn’t anything special, it isn’t all that well designed, it doesn’t really communicate much in the way of story, or mood, or setting. It isn’t the worst floating-head poster ever, but it is far from being the best.
Overall a good solid mainstream poster. Word-of-mouth is going to make or break this film anyway. So hopefully this poster brings in some people that wouldn’t normally go to this movie, they enjoy it and tell all their friends.
March 6th, 2008 at 10:32 pm
That is fucking sick.

Its a very general and oldschool style poster to me. I am not a Star Trek fan by any means but this poster oddly reminds me of one. Jeff Bridges’ portrait in this poster reminded me of Patrick Steward and I guess it just hinted at Star Trek. So if you replace Iron man with a Cyborg and it has the fine makings of an old Star Trek poster. Like Rezzo said It can be like the Rocketeer too.

I think it serves its purpose, though it’s nothing special. It’s not that bad either, but it could’ve been better. I’m a bit bothered by the empty black center… it feels so empty. If that was intentional, it has to look like they intended it and not an oversight. It looks balanced at first, but if you squint your eyes, the points of interest are unevenly spaced.
I kinda like the look and feel Mark 1-2-3 poster they released a while back. It has that visual energy that this poster lacks.
Either way, it still works as a promotional piece, and I’m excited for seeing the film itself in less than two months.

These are really terrific. I agree with Ray too - there’s something very nostalgic about it. Nothing groundbreaking but some very classy “event movie” posters.
My only critique is that i’m not fussed on the Gwenyth shot they’ve used. It’s an awkward pose.

I’m getting the Star Wars poster vibe here
March 7th, 2008 at 1:14 am
I prefer the above poster, I think it’s pretty good.
March 7th, 2008 at 3:41 am
haha thank you Rezzo. You nailed it.
I don’t like either, you’d think a company filled with tons of comicbook artists could have contributed an awesome final poster for the film. These photoshopped, badly perspectived, concepts always suck to me.
That pencil sketch Drew Struzen did for Hellboy 2 blows these out of the water because it has so much “character” and “movement”. I still don’t get why Paltrow is in this film to begin with.

pretty average poster for a pretty badass movie, but i think it’ll draw a crowd.
what’s with the rocketeer comparisons…seriously?
March 7th, 2008 at 5:04 am
Gwyneth and Paltrow ?
other than that is OK
March 7th, 2008 at 5:30 am
I like the explosion in the 2nd one far more than the explosion in the first one.
March 7th, 2008 at 7:47 am
does paltrow’s vagina blow-up in the film too?
March 7th, 2008 at 7:57 am
Absolutely looking forward to this movie.
My most anticipated movie for May. Fuck indy 4 and all other movies coming out in may.
March 7th, 2008 at 9:14 am
I like the composition of the 2nd poster, but I’d rather they used the armor from the first one. The colors are a but duller than the first, though… the red and yellow could be brighter.

ALL of you who don’t like the poster(s) design…Post your own.Grab your graphics pens,Adobe software, scanners and what not and create a better one.PUT UP or SHUT THE FUCK UP!!!Let’s see how many stick figures and comic book rip-offs appear.
March 7th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
Very Stars Wars-esque, not that its a bad thing, probably Faverau is trying to say his superhero movie is different, I mean you don’t see poaters like that for Spiderman, Superman, or really Batman, I think the posters looks awesome, very distinguishing, although at the theater some people will be conflicted thinking: “do i want action and entertainment or dark and serious overtones?”
March 7th, 2008 at 12:39 pm
I dig it. Looks a lot like a SW poster. Which is good, brings back that old feel, back to a time when movies were good, back before the empire!
March 7th, 2008 at 12:56 pm
I think liked some of the teasers more

haha because Iron-man isn’t from a comicbook? Like I said any of Marvel artists could have drawn something 100 times better while intoxicated.

Ha, im pretty sure many people can make better ones… think about it, these posters are just cut outs of stock pics and just placed around the place… there is nothing really too special about the posters, particularly in design, nothing unique… the person who made these posters prob took 10mins… its really really not that difficult
take a look at ’slashfilm’s Top 10 Posters and u know wat i mean
SO SHUT UP!?
March 7th, 2008 at 4:30 pm

Hey, the second one is way better!
April 29th, 2008 at 7:07 am
Hey Donivan, Lets see your mockup of a good poster, hmm? Since telling people to isn’t working, you should just make one, show it, let people decide and then we can all go see the movie and run our own imagination ourselves.
Go have fun and see the movie!!
