On Wednesday we told you that Steve Wiebe, noted Donkey Kong competitor and star of the 2007 documentary The King of Kong, was going to attempt to set the Donkey Kong World Record at Microsoft’s MIX08 event tonight in Las Vegas, with referee Walter Day in attendance. Many readers have commented and e-mailed me asking if Wiebe was able to defeat champion Billy Mitchell’s score of 1,050,200 points. A few minutes ago we received the following unsolicited e-mail:
“Steve scored approx. 929,000 and reached the kill screen I believe… Great effort… Thanks, Billy Mitchell”
That’s right, THAT Billy Mitchell e-mailed us to brag that he is still the record holder. I’m sure anyone who has seen the fantastic documentary has something to say about this…

I remember watching the MTV special True Life where they followed around Billy Mitchell, among others, and all I could think was how much of douche this guy was. Documentaries are normally a bit skewed to reflect the filmmaker’s perspective, but this one is REALLY slanted. Still an amazingly entertaining film, but don’t get suckered into thinking it’s fact.

If you actually take the time to look at twin galaxies website and read what they have to say about the doc, you know that it misrepresents so much. Mitchell’s suspiscious score was taken down two days after that event, and Steve Weibe was the record holder for about two years. It also misrepresented Billy Mitchell, quoting him out of context and showing him doing things he never did, such as avoiding Weibe in florida. Mitchell doesn’t brag in that email, he actually commends Weibe’s effort! What else do you expect from the man? You want him to just give up his title because a documentary that misrepresents so much makes you sympathize with the other guy? Come on.

You have to look at it both ways. Billy Mitchell is known for his Donkey Kong score and that’s what he’ll be remembered for. And the fact that someone who hasn’t been involved with the game but for the past 4 or so years is trying to take your name is probably pretty disheartening. But on the other hand Steve Weibe is the underdog who just wants to succeed at something and doesn’t have any malice in doing so.
I personally couldn’t sit on a stool for 4 hours listening to that inane bleeping sound only to come up short. That to me is a personality scrubber.

I wouldn’t exactly hold “King of Kong” to its truthfulness. As a filmmaker, I know the power of editing. I know how anyone can
be made into a jerk, and granted I disliked Billy very much in
the movie, he is a person, not a character. I don’t think he’s seen
the movie but I believe he could tell you what happens in the movie because of the negitivity pointed at Mitchell.
Its good to keep an open mind while watching King of Kong. It is the best documentary this year! I loved it! It was an excellent underdog story ,but I would also look at the twin galaxies link above if your wanting to see another viewpoint of what happend.

If you watch all of the bonus stuff and interviews on the DVD, you do get a much more 3 dimensional view of Billy Mitchell and what all went down. I thoroughly enjoyed the movie and (obviously) rooted for Steve all the way, but the thing about Billy is that I have known guys just like that in my life, and it made me feel a little sorry for him. He is the Daniel Plainview of Donkey Kong in the “I have a competition in me” sort of way. But every competitor is the Daniel Plainview of their sport. Or they better fuckin’ be. I actually thought Walter Day was more interesting then either of them or the competition.

Yeah. I agree with you. I’m not in the “Billy Mitchell is a complete turd and a disgrace to humanity” camp either. What he accomplished on Pac Man and Donkey Kong is still pretty incredible, and so what, the dude is proud of his records. If I was flown to Japan to receive a trophy by the game’s creator, I think a little ego is called for.
He’s sort of like Plainview in that he’s such a hard-ass, but his competition and confidence is intriguing and infectious. But yeah, he’s definitely been over-vilified I feel, sort of like how Plainview has. He has a competition inside him, hah, and his “World Record Headquarters” line is nearly as good as TWBB’s Milkshake one.

I too had to go read more on Billy after I watched the movie, because I wasn’t convinced they were telling the whole truth. So I went out to the links on Twin Galaxies that tell “the real story”. I read that Billy was misrepresented in the movie and that he is a good guy and yada yada yada, but I don’t believe all of that either because Billy has been a long time staff member of Twin Galaxies….of course they are going to back him up. Personally, in the end I still feel Billy Mitchell is a douchebag

Why do some of you think the Twin Galaxies site is anymore truthful than the documentary?
I’m sure there’s truth in the documentary and truth in the accounts of the Twin Galaxies folks. You have to make your own judgments. I’ve read a lot about the disputes with the film; I’ve read responses from the filmmakers.
IMHO, I trust the filmmakers about 90 percent, Billy Mitchell about 40 percent and the Twin Galaxies folks about 70 percent.

I just finished watching King of Kong and then read up on the re-breaking of Steve Wiebe’s records. I have to say Billy Mitchell is obviously a good donkey kong player, but thats about it. As a man and as a human being, Steve Wiebe comes out on top. Thats worth more than a donkey kong score in most people’s book.
I was shocked that Billy Mitchell was unable to even acknowledge Steve Wiebe’s presence. Very weak.

WOW!! I just watched the movie, great, great, great! Being a product of the early 70’s i was in to the arcades huge! Still am, just at home, on a cozy chair. I have also seen many films and docs, and was editing footage with razor blades and scotch tape before video caught up, so I know how films can be unbalanced, michael moore, blah blah. But you know what? Even if Billy was the ‘one’ “born to bear and bring to all the details of our ending,”
I’d still only remember him comparing himself to perfection…After opening a fortune cookie.
I would much rather meet and greet Steve Wiebe. Less history, but less stink too.
Great friggin movie. Best part is when that dude slams his Vdub trunk shut on his gear, I can relate homey!!

So, in light of all these scores, whatever happened to the 985K score that Steve earned at Funspot, and did his buddy come through with the $10K for Billy beating a million in a public venue? How public was the venue and did anyone tear apart the machine to make sure it had not been tampered with? I find it interesting that the machine Steve played in the documentary was in Billy’s hometown and the Billy nevr played it with Steve or the filmcrew in attendence. I just visited the Twin Galaxies website and feel that they went to extraordinary efforts to secure Billy’s place at the top, delaring that Steve’s game was now “illegal”. I think that Steve , Tim and Billy should play on one machine , one at a time. The highest score at the end of three complete games is the winner. No thoughts of cheating, advantages or so on.I’ll provide THE Donkey Kong machine .

I just finished watching the movie about the Donky Kong record and I must say that I agree that Billy is the biggest POS! He lamanets about issues then breaks them himself and seems to almost cry that he is no longer worthwhile. My god if thats all you have in your pathetic life you deserve to be second. I admire and applaud Steve for coming out and actually proving himself and have absolutely NO RESPECT for Billy. Just saw the movie. I thought it was great. I believe it showed Steve as a great guy, and ultimately the winner of something much bigger than a stupid video game title, namely “happiness”. In the end, even if he loses his title, he gets to go home to a great wife and kids and a real life. He competed like a professional and a gentleman in the face of unfairness. That’s something to be proud of.
I feel sorry for Billy because he’s such an easy target and obviously feels inadequate in so many ways that he has to boast and act like he’s better than other people. He can have his money and titles, but that stuff will never make you happy.

Is there anyway we can get kids and others interested in the competitive aspect of playing classic arcade and then sell Joysticks for say home consoles that are really good and versions that are at the right speeds and accurate for competion and things like hand grips, accessories so we can have multiple systems displayed right at the same time and then have a Pro league for classic Arcade and events either like football matches with real commentators and slo-mo explanations of the moves and so on and intermissions with bands like Moog Cookbook and histories of the games short documentaries? And pay them real money because kids would play now if it is a sport like they skateboard and you see a ton of stuff and t-shirts and so on. The pro endorsed joysticks like Steve uses when he plays the home versions. And then ads for them. And Steve can quit his teaching job to do this as a pro and he will be the leading player in his category because Billy won’t play and of course this will be all live for money like the Tennis and other pros. No more pause button glitches and Guiness having a fake score in their book. Billy is a total cheat and anti-America and too afraid to play Weibe live so let Weibe be the Steve Hawkins of Pro Classic Arcade. You can have cheerleaders too. And if games are too long you can have special tournament versions that edit for time whatever needs to be done to make the events cool for TV and watchable like other televised sports and good comentators announcing and explaining with replay. If the dog shows where the dog just runs around and it’s supposed to be mainly politics of which dog wins gets on year after year on USA then this should be big especially after king of Kong and I can see kids and others playing with the hopes of making the big time. And you could make it a nation to nation thing too by makig it global with our Steve representing the USA. Please somebody do this- we want a pro league now and a real cool environment for game play with old stuff in it in a way that would make the kids think it is cool so you can sell arcade stuff to them so they can compete and other merchadise to make the money off it so this can really be Pro and Steve does this for his living. I don’t know what games would be in the competitions- I imagine a fair number maybe in modified forms for time or speed versions in some cases like Speed chess- dating or made to play like a real sporting event however that would work- but only certain ones would get on Televison based on who are the most popular players and what are the big games. And then the main event of the evening Weibe vs. Mitchell. And maybe you could have different leagues and a play-offs and championship round and you could have the modified pro level competition versions of the classic arcades issued for home systems with new joysticks you buy separately that are high quality and the games work right and a hand glove for hand wear and so on so you can really play the competitive version at home. You may need to rig the games without losing the greatness of them so they encourage real competition head to head in a way that can work for TV like a real sport. Hi I’m steve weibe and when I’m playing Classic competitive mode arcade at home I only use _________ brand joysticks to get that accurate cornering and instant fire capability and then use the official terms in the ad the real lingo. Also someone probably other than May since he cheats for Mitchell would describe terms and rules in the bumpers for the competitions on TV with the right Video of the games to explain it. Classic Arcade is perfect because for whatever reasons it leads itself to sports- like competition in a way the new games do not.

Oh yeah stuff like the sports carrying case made real cool and official for carrying all your equipment to use. If they use the arcade versions then the newer home versions are sanctioned by the heads of the leagues as good and i the ads you can say you can practice the pro competition versions and then if you are good enough be selected to try out for the big time. I think that Steve got the run around and I don’t trust that ref Walter Day, him and Billy are to good friends and feel that Billy should be reffed by someone he doesn’t know and in public, to be fair. Video can be faked, specially a 8bit game made 30 years ago. If your are the champ Billy then you should not be worried. Love the hair you f#g:)
