Update: Did Steve Wiebe Reclaim His Title as The King of Kong?
/Film reader Joseph D sent word that Steve Wiebe, noted Donkey Kong competitor and star of the 2007 documentary The King of Kong, will attempt to set the Donkey Kong World Record later today at Microsoft’s MIX08 event tonight in Las Vegas, with referee Walter Day in attendance.
Video game champion Billy Mitchell beat Wiebe’s record in June of 2007, and currently is ranked #1 with 1,050,200 points to Steve’s 1,049,100 points (only 1,100 points separating them). The event takes place during Microsoft’s TAO NIGHTCLUB PARTY from 6:00pm to10:00pm in The Venetian Resort Hotel Casino.

There’s a bunch of controversy about King of Kong portraying Billy Mitchell in a bad light, but:
a) no one with that hair/beard can be a good person
b) there were some things that he did and said that can’t really be interpreted in more than one way.

Damn, G stole my post. What a great flick, and what a serious douchebag Mitchell is! I understand editing can make people look like asshats that really aren’t, but it’s hard to despute how much of a cock Mitchell looked like - especially the whole videotape fiasco, and his unwillingness to show up when Steve was playing.

Billy is the greatest gamer of all time. The first perfect pac-man game and the world record holder of the Donkey Kong record as well as the Donkey Kong JR world record. He got the new Donkey Kong world record in public with a ref present at a 80s themed show in front of a audiance.and steve will always be #2 as long as Billy is here.

Billy “the Sob Seger look alike” Mitchell and all of his sycophants are a tired old story; down trodden social retards living in a world they try to make important to everyone else and in the process just make themselves appear more pathetic. I’m embarassed for them. I pity them but want to wring their necks at the same time. On the other handS teve Wiebe seems to be more of a good guy gone astray. He was going to the grocery store for milk when out of the shadows two pale doughy villains garbed in hot wings sauce encrusted t-shirts and plaid polyester pants smelling of beans stopped him and asked, “want to try some DK kid”. I don’t think B.M. will ever have as many fans or friends.
