I don't know if some of you already did it, but you should google for the original movie script, before Akiva "Attila" Goldman ruined it to make the movie we saw in theatres worldwide.

In this script, the Hemocytes, as they called, talk, think and fight. They're organized in different casts, clerics, warriors, nurses, you name it, and they know since the beginning where Neville lives since they try to break into his fortress every night. Well, in fact every 2 nights because after each attack, they mourn for their dead fellas on the following night.

For each attack, they come like an army with drums, and songs, so attractive that Neville has to crunk classical music to avoid listening to their calls. In this script also, the dog isn't named, but is even more useful than in the movie: it stays out in the inner perimeter of Neville's fortress during the attacks.

I won't sum it all here, but this script tend to follow a lot more the movie. In it, Anna is sent by Cortman (the Hemocyte leader) as a trojan horse to gain trust and then betray Neville by switching off all the defensive material (cameras, sensors, mines...). In this script, she's one of the human that the Hemocytes cattle to have fresh blood and Cortman tells her that if she helps them catching (not killing) Neville, they'll set her and her baby brother free.

When Neville gets caught, they bring him back to their city and display him on a pole for everybody to see that their warriors finally succeeded in catching the monster. There, Neville realizes that they are not what he thought, and that they have artistic skills, in their way. Babies look at him with fear in their eyes and drink the blood drops leaking from his wounds like all child do with the first snow flakes in winter.

Unfortunately, I can't find the url but you should find this script quite easily. Of course, as a script, there is some hollywood scenes but I guess F. Lawrence and W. Smith should have follow this one instead of the aseptised one they shot.

I just watched the DVD. I haven't read the book yet (ordered) but when I went googling for answers as to why I am Legend had such an awkward ending, I came across this site. This is a much better ending, obviously. The concept that there were a society of vampires was obvious to the audience, but it seemed as though Will was completely oblivious to their humanity.

But would the vampies not have chomped on Will as punishment? What were they even eating? I don't think there were enough deer to go around.

So, the original isn't that much better.

I just watched this movie last night and the ending where Will Smith DIDN'T die was one of the worst things I've ever seen. Those creatures didn't kill all the other immune survivors on Earth just to find a moment of kindness for Will Smith in the end. Totally implausible.
The theartrical ending was a 100x better.
And forget the bridges, why didn't the millions of rats in Manhattan get infected and run rampit every night? The rats in his lab looked pretty fierce...

by the way - check out the 'Shelter' animated comic on the dvd extras. Its way scarier (and maybe even better) than the actual film, plus it gives some pretty huge clues into which ending is the 'true' ending....

The two ending have entirely different contexts I guess - almost a science -v- religion debate.
In the original ending the timing of events is far too tightly paced to be coincidental (Anna turning up to save Neville just at *that* time, messages from God, the butterfly symbol to indicate a 'chosen one' etc). Everything seems driven by a divine power and the monsters don't and never will evolve here, the poor bastards, although why Will Smith doesn't just throw the grenade and get in the coal shoot too we'll never know.

The alternative takes the ideas seen earlier in the film that the monsters are indeed getting more intelligent, capable of planning, leadership and even love and compassion. Perhaps the butterfly symbol is symbolic of a metamorphis then?
As for the bridge question, maybe the monsters even got so clever and considerate, they rebuilt the bridge themselves one night, both as a Birthday present to Neville and also to get rid of the little sh*t so they could run around screaming at night untroubled! (surely not!)
Either way - decent film, ropey ending(s).

If all the bridges were blown up, how did she get on Manhattan island with Ethan? And in the released version of the movie, how did she leave the island if the bridges were blown up? Not to make a mountain out of a mole hill, but she shouldn't have been on the island in the first place. The Bridge in the Alternate ending looks like the GWB. This bridge was not seen being blown up in the film. Since I live in New York near where most of the outside shots were filmed, these details maybe minor but through a New Yawker's eye it's a BIG deal.

Also, as far as the discontinuity of the rage of the virus goes, the darkseekers in the movie showed signs of intelligence throughout the whole movie, gathering in groups, setting up traps. The rats being feral is just a sign of their low intelligence. Any intelligent being could concievably resist the temptation to act on feral impulses for the sake of order and further growth.

Just look at humanity! Sure we have the impules to act violently from time to time, but we resist those urges for the sake of order (and yes, sometimes out of fear of retribution, like the main darkseeker's lackeys seemed to be).

It seems like the whole movies was leading up to the revelation that the monsters were intelligent and had their own society, and to just sacrifice that in favor of an ignorant, desperate explosion seems a foolish conclusion, despite that being what Neville ultimately did in the book.

I think that the original ending is far too hopeful for humanity. This one made it seem like normal humans are now the rarity, and that the monsters are the new society, even if it was thinly veiled. The original ending also was almost a bible story in it's "trust in faith" appeal. This one was by far superior, even if Neville didn't end up dying. The result of his legendary status is the same.

In the book, Neville didn't have to die at all. It was just because he was stupid and stayed behind to fight the human-esque vampires that he was executed. He could have just left and he would have been just as large a legend. Larger, even, because he wouldn't have been caught, and the vampires would have had to live in fear of his return.

First of all, I haven't read the book. I did see "Omega Man" as a kid, but I don't remember how the movie ended, just the basic plot. As for the recent adaptation, I liked the theatrical ending of "I Am Legend," but I would have liked it better if they had not obviously set up the movie for the alternate ending. I disagree with those that didn't see this as I did, even before I saw or knew of the alternate ending. I thought it was apparent that the alpha darkseeker was trying to save the captured darkseeker when he ran after her when Neville captured her. I also thought it was obvious that the darkseekers set the trap for Neville, and that the alpha darkseeker was leading the charge against Neville, not only for blood lust, but also as a retaliation against his "attacks" on them. There seemed to me to be this underlying theme that Neville had lost the ability to see the darkseekers as human. This is emphasized when Anna refers to the female darkseeker in the lab as "she" and Neville makes a point of calling her "it." I thought this was really interesting juxtaposed with Neville’s discussion of Bob Marley and what he stood for. Somehow Neville had separated himself from what he really believed. When I did see the alternate ending, I thought it, at least, pulled this idea together, especially with the shot of Neville on the floor after the darkseekers left and all of the pictures of the darkseekers he had killed in his experiments on the wall behind him. While I like the theatrical ending, it left me hanging. Once I saw the alternate ending, I understood why.

The alternative ending was interesting, but was not congruous with the rest of the movie. The blinding rage seemed to be a symptom of the virus. Just think back to the test rats at the beginning of the movie. It's hard for me to believe that the darkseekers would act civilized and almost diplomatic when the rest of the movie showed them as violent. I appreciate that it was trying to hearken to the themes of the book by showing that the darkseekers had a society of their own, and probably viewed Neville as a mass murderer, but these themes appear a little too late in the movie to really weigh in very heavily. That makes sense if you compare it to themes of the book, but when the movie stands alone with that alternative ending, it just doesn't work. It seems to come out of nowhere.

In short, yes, this alternative ending included some interesting conclusions (the interpretation of the quote "I Am Legend" to mean that the darkseekers were the ones that viewed Neville as the legend, like in the book) but when looking at the other 95 minutes of the movie, the theatrical version of the last 5 worked much better. In my opinion at least.
