Lisa, you are part of the reason the issue of race in this country never goes anywhere but around in circles, commentary like that is almost as bad as some tenured college professors who enjoy just pushing agenda. I agree blackface is offensive, but we're talking early 1800's. DO you see a similarity in RDJ character. The eyes, the skin color, the lips, are they there to contribute to some stereotype to hold us down. We waste so much time playing up the issue of racism it's almost become a game, what's the next thing I as a black man can find offensive and hold up for the world to see? There are more important things, this world is moving forward, as you can see if your watching the elections.

Many African-Americans (including myself) think it's offensive. Just like the movie Soul Man was offensive. To justify it by pointing to the movie "White Chicks," is ignorant because there is not the same history that is attached to the idea of black face.

As an African American QUITE familiar with the historical role that black face had in entertaining white audiences, I know that Tropic Thunder is just laugh out loud, pee in your pants, sheer entertainment for ALL audiences.

to matt penn, black artists playing white characters is not the same in reverse because black history is wayyyyyy different. we have a history filled with separation, violence and inhumane treatment perpertrated towards us because of our SKIN. that ever happen to you? I think not.

Oh, and that 'so called' racism comment clearly shows that you ain't black - or if you are, you CLEARLY didn't get that all-important email.

I just hope that since he has played a black he didn't take to much of the roll with him and he starts stealing committing murder and raping people. Maybe he will join a gang and start selling drugs and beating his wife. Good luck Robert I am pulling for you man!

Yeah. It's not blackface. I like the idea behind his character, and from the previews he seems to pull it off insanely well!!! He plays a serious white actor who is given a 'probably' stereotypical role originally intended for a black man (seems to be made from a mix of black characters from Predator,Iron Eagle, and Full Metal Jacket).

...that being said, as serious as he seems to be taking the role, and as dedicated as his character seems to be, it will be interesting to see what direction it takes. Does he become completely brainwashed by the end of the film and lose his 'whiteness', or is he finally slapped down by another black cast member who has finally had enough after he starts grasping at stereotype straws and spouting 'yessuh' and other 'offensive' ethnically accented words???

Ignorant people are going to be soooo pissed by this movie without even knowing what it's about.

Even though anyone of any other race or nationality can play any other race or nationality without public scrutiny and backlash.

Ever since the incredibly offensive days of Blackface.... hell, back then even black performers were often told to 'darken up'.. those were crazy days... but seeing as Downey's role isn't written to be offensive or racist... even though his CHARACTERS role may be stereotypical and racist (perhaps why the didn't have a black actor??)..

well.. anyway.. even if people start to bitch about it, it's a far far far cry from the days of 'Mammy' and 'Sambo' and all the makeup and characterization involved then..

Downey is no Al Jolson.. but then again, Al used Blackface as a way of familiarizing whites with black music and culture, even though it is offensive, it got people to accept and feel comfortable with black performers... to give them more value and credit.... And Jolson also fought long and hard for racial equality on Broadway and beyond.

So I guess when it comes to Jolson it's a rather complicated story.
what was i talking about??

I think it has the potential to be a funny movie. I'm not comfortable with saying Downey is acting in black face though. There is no need to dredge up 1800's vocabulary with negative connotations to describe a modern day satirical character.

Here's what I don't understand about so-called "racism":

When comedian Eddie Murphy starred famously in a Saturday Night Live sketch in which--yup!--he pretended to be a white guy, it was recognized for what it was (i.e., parody, social commentary, pretty damn funny). Comedian Dave Chappelle has "played white". Academy Award winner Joel Grey played a stereotype of an Oriental mystic in "Remo Williams".

And that's what's going on here. Robert Downey. Jr. is an Academy Award-nominated actor. And I think his perspective is dead-on: If he turns the performance into nothing more than offensive caricature, he will have failed. Otherwise, he should be respected, I think, for being the brilliant, daring actor he is.

He's an ACTOR. So if African-American actors can play Danish princes in "Hamlet"--and they can--I don't see why Robert Downey, Jr. doesn't at least deserve our open minds with respect to his performance.

Heere's a novel idea: Let's SEE THE MOVIE before passing judgment, people!

I am black (not that I subscribe to race as a concept or racial identity), and I'm not offended. Actually, when I first saw the photograph I thought it was a black actor...only after researching did I realise it was RDJ, who I think is a very talented actor. I'm looking forward to seeing this.

I am an African American man and Downey's depiction (make up) looks great. The only and I mean only problem here is calling it black face. Its like the people calling it this are getting a cheap thrill because they get to use the phrase over and over again. He is simply in black "make up" . Stop tyring to get the poor guy in trouble, you people are old enough to know the term is where the offense begins.

It's not really offensive blackface is the guy is playing a white guy doing blackface... then he'd have to be a white guy, right? Lol. I don't agree with blackface at all but this is more of a mockery so it's all good ^_^

And for those interested in understanding the history of blackface and minstrelsy, I strongly urge you to read John Strausbaugh's excellent BLACK LIKE YOU, a fascinating look at the motivation behind the emergence of blackface shows and performers as the most popular form of American entertainment for nearly a century.

Read that book and the debate over whether Downey's performance is by-definition blackface ends as abruptly as a bicyclist slamming into a brick wall.

Speaking as a lifelong negro, this is in now way offensive. Downey's not playing a guy in blackface; he's playing a serious actor who's so "method" that he immerses himself so deeply into his role that he has a surgical procedure to alter his features and give him the necessary melanin. As the story progresses he starts spouting "black" jargon and platitudes, irritating the living hell out of a black castmate. Now I don't know about how others may feel, but that's totally crazy and pretty damned funny.

As a white male, I'm not in a position to empathize with the legacy of blackface. I do, however, understand it to be one of the most egregious moments in American entertainment long history of egregious moments. For this, I can certainly sympathize.

I don't think calling this "blackface" is accurate, though. RDJ is probably one of the most socially conscious actors in America, and I don't think he'd take this role if he didn't think he could do something special with it. The makeup does not appear to be anything incendiary, nor do I expect any "yessuh"s from Jr. in this film. At worst, this could be a career-ending move for several involved parties, starting with RDJ and Stiller and ending with distribution execs who bought it. At best, we can look at RDJ's role as an interesting commentary on the arbitrary role pigment plays in our society. I'll probably see this movie on DVD and be able to judge it better at that time. For now, I'm going to guess it will fall somewhere short of offensive, and somewhere short of brilliant.

And, for the record, calling "Zoolander" a "flop" ignores the cult success it has enjoyed and will continue to enjoy amongst stoner culture for some decades to come. It's in my collection alongside such other predictable-yet-enjoyable classics as "Dazed and Confused," "Half Baked," and "Southpark: Bigger, Longer and Uncut".

At worst, this could be a career-ending move for several involved parties, starting with RDJ and Stiller and ending with distribution execs who bought it. At best, we can look at RDJ’s role as an interesting commentary on the arbitrary role pigment plays in our society. I’ll probably see this movie on DVD and be able to judge it better at that time. For now, I’m going to guess it will fall somewhere short of offensive, and somewhere short of brilliant.

And, for the record, calling “Zoolander” a “flop” ignores the cult success it has enjoyed and will continue to enjoy amongst stoner culture for some decades to come. It’s in my collection alongside such other predictable-yet-enjoyable classics as “Dazed and Confused,” “Half Baked,” and “Southpark: Bigger, Longer and Uncut”.

White Chicks is NOT, I repeat NOT, similar to blackface. Blackface was used to negatively depict African Americans. They saw us a "bafoons", "inhumane" and "ignorant". The psychologically negative effects of blackface has resonated within our community. Of course a non-African American would think its funny, but socially conscious AA's wouldn't even smirk at the description of this movie.

Oh, yeah, I LOVE JACK BLACK!! :p

One of the other writers on Highbrid Nation wrote about Robert Downy playing a black man. He worries that Al Sharpton might have something to say about it, lol. Honestly as a black person I think it's kinda cool that movie make-up has gotten to the point where you can make someone look like another race and if the pics I've seen of Robert Downy in costume are accurate than they did a really good job! Plus Robert is a very capable actor so I'm sure he wont come across as stereo typical or offensive. I could be wrong though.
