Will Ferrell’s Semi-Pro has tanked, ending a disastrous week for New Line. Not only did the studio cease business as a full-fledged studio on Thursday, now its 70’s-style basketball comedy managed only $5M on Friday, and it is likely headed for a meager $14.3M for the weekend. That would make Semi-Pro only the 9th-best opening of Farrell’s career.
ALL-TIME TOP 10 WILL FERRELL LIVE ACTION OPENINGS
1. Talladega Nights - $47M
2. Blades of Glory - $33M
3. Elf - $31.1M
4. Anchorman - $28.4M
5. Kicking & Screaming - $20.15M
6. Bewitched - $20.13M
7. Old School - $17.4M
8. Zoolander - $15.5M
9. Semi-Pro - $14.3M (estimate)
10. Stranger Than Fiction - $13.4M
The failure of Semi-Pro puts an exclamation point at the end of a long losing streak for New Line that has resulted in Time Warner’s decision this week to fold it into Warner Bros. Bob Shaye and Michael Lynne have been sent packing after a stretch that has included bombs like Rendition ($9.7M cume), Martian Child ($7.5M cume), The Last Mimzy (directed by Shaye himself and generating only $21.4M domestic), Over Her Dead Body ($7.49M cume to-date) and the high profile mega-budgeted The Golden Compass ($70M cume).
Sony’s Vantage Point grabbed another $3.8M on Friday, and the assassination thriller should finish its 2nd weekend with about $12M, good for 2nd place. The studio gambled by releasing this high-end commercial film with an A-list cast on Oscar weekend, and it has paid off. Vantage Point will have banked an estimated $40M by Monday morning.
The Other Boleyn Girl, another Sony film, has debuted solidly on 1,166 screens, delivering $2.9M on opening day for a $2,487 PTA. This Natalie Portman-Scarlett Johansson bodice-ripper, based on Philippa Gregory’s best selling novel, will likely finish the frame with a more-than-respectable $8.5M.
Holdovers Jumper (Fox) and The Spiderwick Chronicles (Paramount) finished 4-5 on Friday with $2.1M and $1.8M respectively. Family audiences will lift Spiderwick to #4 with $8.1M for the weekend and a new cume of $54.4M compared to an estimated $7.5M for Jumper with a new cume of $66.7M.
Penelope, the well-reviewed fairy tale being released by Summit Entertainment, has failed to connect with audiences. Despite the presence of Golden Globe nominees Christina Ricci and James McAvoy and Oscar winner Reese Witherspoon, the fantasy yarn only delivered $1.1M to start the weekend. Penelope will likely finish the weekend at #10 with $3.1M.
Of the 8 limited specialty releases, Bonneville (Sen Arts/Scranton Lacy Films) appears to be the most successful. With a cast that includes Kathy Bates, Jessica Lange, Joan Allen and Christine Baranski, Bonneville is drawing an older audience at 101 locations. The movie sold $53,000 in admissions on Friday, and it’ll finish just over $185,000 for the weekend.
Best Foreign Language Film Oscar winner The Counterfeiters (Sony Classics) looks like the PTA winner for the weekend at 18 locations. It delivered $3,333 per screen on Friday and a probably $13,000 or so for the weekend. The Other Boleyn Girl will likely finish #2 on the weekend PTA scoreboard.

i hope they dont scrap the ferrell baseball movie that i assume is in production

Is it me or is Ferrell pulling a Sandler? using the same style over and over till people give up and he has to move on to pay his mortgage. I loved their work on SNL but Hollywood needs to stop feeding us recycled garbage.

Is Be Kind Rewind in a limited release or something?
March 1st, 2008 at 7:08 am
First off, for the sake of considering “Sandler Films” we have to rule out Spanglish and Punch Drunk Love from the discussion.
Sandler has changed things up a bit from his first few, making a few more balanced romantic comedies with emphasis on a female character (the two with Drew Barrymore), as well as a few with him not playing the standard everyman (The Waterboy or Little Nicky), and using more fantastic premises (Click or Little Nicky, even 50 First Dates, etc.) but outside of that, they are all basically following a certain mold and yet …. Sandler has still been ridiculously successful. What movie of his has flopped besides Little Nicky? And could that just be attributed to his character not being as appealing (he’s not the standard “Sandler character”)? Just look at the box office take of Click and I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry. Sandler is a box office heavyweight.

All of these guys need to take note of Mike Meyers. Austin Powers were all evenly spaced to build ample anticipation. Before that it was the equally spaced Wayne’s world films. Then he made a load of $ with the Shrek movies, with just his voice, which didn’t burn him out to the public.
Although this latest bit character feature of his seems to be questionable, but we’ll see.
anyway, yeah Ferrell needs to take a vacation. suppose he thought he stumbled onto a way to make easy money. Surprise.

Thank god. Nothing about this film looked entertaining. Out of everyone that I talked to around campus about this movie, none of them had any intention of seeing this film. It just looks… like the same old stuff that Ferrell keeps starring in.
March 1st, 2008 at 10:50 am
HAHAHAHAHA!
YOU GUYS ACTUALLY THOUGHT THIS WOULD PULL IN 40 MILLION+
WHAT A BUNCH OF IDIOTS!
But on a serious note, you really need to take the R-rating into consideration. If this were PG-13, I could see this making at least $30 million.
March 1st, 2008 at 1:11 pm
Good, now that his movie bombed maybe Will Ferrell will stop playing the same self-absorbed socially-retarded character over and over.
March 1st, 2008 at 1:32 pm
Just saw the film… It was one of the least enjoyable Ferrell films. Just stale. Outrageous stupidity and shock factor have run their course. These guys need to take a break or move on.
March 1st, 2008 at 1:44 pm
Will Ferrell is very talented (as seen in Stranger than Fiction) and he has to stop with this formula already. It’s gotten old.
March 1st, 2008 at 3:45 pm
YESSS!!! Oh man! I was getting really worried I was missing something here. I was never interested in “Semi-Pro” and its R-rating really drove my point home. But still most analysts were predicting $30-$35 million and I still didn’t pick it up on any slates. Boy! I am glad I stuck with my gut feeling! What a disappointment that’ll cost many moguls, what, $30+? Ohhh yeaahh. Haha.
March 1st, 2008 at 4:02 pm
Im glad i’m not the only won that thought this movie wasn’t the greatest. I saw this last night and it had funny parts but overall not something I would recommend.
On another note, didnt The Golden Compass do a lot better over sees? I thought it made more their then here in the states.
Oh and finally note…was I the only one that liked the last mimzy?
March 1st, 2008 at 6:45 pm
It ain’t that bad but i guarantee some people are Ferrell’ed out. Plus the R rating don’t help with the teenage money.
March 1st, 2008 at 7:24 pm
Rosario: Yes, The Golden Compass did extremely well overseas compared to it’s domestic take. It’s amassed more than $260 million internationally.
