More Bourne

Matt Damon and Paul Greengrass will be returning for a fourth film in the Bourne series.

The Bourne trilogy has made over $945 million worldwide at the box office (the last film, Ultimatum, responsible for $443 million of that total). The films are based on novels by Robert Ludlum, who passed away in 2001. Eric Van Lustbader has since written two sequels to Ludlum’s Bourne series: The Bourne Legacy in 2004, and The Bourne Betrayal in 2007), both of which have received lukewarm reviews by readers. Hollywood might be better off creating their own story to continue the franchise.

Damon is already signed to star in Steven Soderberg’s The Informant and is in talks to star in Clint Eastwood’s The Human Factor, and with Greengrass busy prepping his Vietnam drama They Marched into Sunlight, it could be a couple years before they begin filming.

Discuss:
With Bourne’s arc complete in Ultimatium, a fourth film seems rather unnecessary. Knowing this, do you still want to see Bourne return to the big screen?

  • Damn right!

The could easily start a new trilogy arc storyline. Best movie news I've read in weeks.
  • SK
Arkadine in "The Bourne Sanction" was a great bad guy giving JB a run for his money on being virutally unbeatable. This storyline would be a great followup to "The Bourne Ultimatum" if they would follow the book of course!
  • gah
It seemed like a logical place to end last go round. But the studio seems keen on milking it untill we beg for no more Bourne. But if they do make another Bourne they should fire Micheal J. Fox and get a new cameraman.
  • Steelo
I'm actually tired of seeing this cat get chased. I'd rather see him be a mentor or something.
  • Ian
Have a break for 2-3 years, then back with a vengeance. Create your own stories. Who needs Ludlum.
  • Mike
Actually, I'd really like to see "Robert Ludlum's 'The Bourne Identity'" made into a movie. That would be pretty cool. Then maybe they could make "Robert Ludlum's 'The Bourne Supremacy'" and "Robert Ludlum's 'The Bourne Ultimatum'"

I would like to go see those movies.
  • I'll watch another Bourne movie, unlike most trilogy's, I found the Bourne series to get better with each one
  • Mike
Apparently, Ian, the original writers decided they didn't need Ludlum either. They used his character's name and the amnesia bit, but that's about all that they kept from Ludlum's series. I'd really enjoy watching Ludlum's trilogy if they would make those into movies.
  • A. J.
As long as they are as good as the other films I'll watch as many as they make.
  • Prat
    Woot! cant wait!
  • Ian
Not sure about that Mike. I found the books too convoluted. But I'm happy to leave it to Paul and Matt. They've done an excellent job so far.

    *SPOILER*

Because of how the last movie ended with Borne’s face and real name all over television as part of a huge Washington scandal; I think it’s time Borne finds himself a cape and cowl and morph into a superhero franchise.

Just like the Bore movies redefined the spy genera, Greengrass and Co, can redefine the superhero genre.

    I’m, of course, only kidding.
  • Tyler J
    prequel prequel prequel!

I think that's what would happen. His past is interesting, as far as I can assume, and, while they revealed a bit about it in the latest film, they could probably explore it more - something like follow him on a mission or something, or, possibly, the mission that led to him being shot in the first movie.
  • I think I'm good. It has a good arc. I was satisfied with the story and left it feeling like I'd had enough, but not too much. I may be interested in seeing them again in the future, but I'm good.

I love the Bournes, dare I say, they may be my favourite film trilogy. However, I just can't see where they would go after Ultimatum. There's no more impetus for the character.

Sure, if Damon and Greengrass are on board, I'll be at the first screening of Bourne 4, but I truly hope they only make it if they feel they can produce a better film than Ultimatum.
  • Tim S
I loved the last film, and I would like to see more, but without it being completely milked. It would be good to see either a prequel to the series as suggested by Tyler J or Steelos idea of having him as mentor, it could be a Leon The Professional style film!
  • pat
nice. I like the movies and as long as they keep coming up with new creative stories I'll keep seeing them. I think that trilogys are overrated... if you can bring something further then why not?
  • Rod
It all depends on the story. If the story isn't as good as the least successful Bourne story already filmed, then don't do it. Otherwise, I will be in line waiting to watch it. :D
  • Sauce
eehh...Of all the Trilogies out there, the Bourne series is the one without a very large gaping hole or bad film. So, why on God's green earth do we need another? It's done, story told. Move on. Holy Spy Satellite Batman, can we PLEASE just come up with some new ideas.
  • I would really enjoy a 4th. And I dont think that any of it is really based on the books so far anyways. So if they employ the same writers as Ultimatum, then it will be great.
  • Number four would be fine with me. Explosions and car chases are usually enough to keep me coming back, but these flicks have good stories too.

    You can count on Thumb!
  • Scott Perry
Leave it with Ultimatum. I loved how it ended and couldn't imagine anything better to end the series.

Each Bourne movie is great. I love what Greengrass/Liman and Damon have done ,but can Hollywood make a different franchise?

    Don't ruin Bourne
  • artgood
99% of what comes out of Hollywood is crap. If the duo of Damon and Greengrass can pull out another compelling story and creative display I will be more than willing to pay good money to go see it.
  • Happy_Evil_Dude
"Hollywood might be better off creating their own story to continue the franchise"....um Hollywood created their own story to start the franchise...Tony Gilroy never even read the books! All he kept was some character names, amnesia, a few other small things and the titles. So yeah, they could call the fourth "The Bourne Legacy" and not have it follow the book at all
  • Obama 08
I think the Bourne series has a very nice arc to it. One of the critiques of the last film was that there was no real character development replaced instead with amazing action. While it was a good ride, it could have been more. Also, the literary character of Carlos has never appeared and very well could be a great plot germ for a fourth installment.

if done right, like Casino Royale to the preceding Bond series, the fourth Bourne should be more of an introspective and building movie to reveal more of the Bourne universe so it doesn't only have to rely on the action.
  • Geny
Now this made my day :)
  • kentonsam
No, the world does not need another Bourne movie, all it'll do is tarnish the greatness of the previous films, they should do what New Line did for Lord of the Rings, just make an endless series of video games, like mmorpg, an rpg or something just no more movies, do they really want the movies to be compared to the Star Wars Prequels?
  • Honest Abe
Ok, if you're going to make another film, make it a prequel. As many people have said, the story is all tied off, and the character has no where to go from here. It would be much more interesting to meet Bourne when he is new to treadstone and see him on some of his first misions.
  • OMG
seriously, this f**kin site has to blast every f**kin movie yet they still put s**t like Superhero movie promo on this website just to add more publicity to it. STFU already.
  • LuVM
I agree with Honest abe, the next SHOULD be a prequel. It is the logical direction to take with this formidable film. Thinking about it well, the only way not to ruin the integrity of the Bourne films is to go back in time.
  • Jason Bourne
I think the Bourne movies were some of(if not The Best) movies ever made. The entire storyline(even though it strayed from the books), the directing, the action, the fighting, and Matt Damon, were all top notch. I think they should absolutely continue making more Bourne films. Everyone here keeps complaining that they didn't stick to the books, but you know what? I don't care. As amazing as the books are, the films are just as awesome. Knowing Paul Greengrass and Matt Damon, they are not going to take the chance of ruining the good Bourne name on a bad movie just to put one out. So I am confident that it will be just as good as all the others. I do love the idea of making a prequel! The idea of him being a mentor sounds good, but I don't know how that would work seeing as how he makes it clear he doesn't want to be an assassin anymore. I think they should first do a sequel of the events and assassinations leading up to him being shot and another sequel about his initial joining of the program and his training. I think those would be great! Regardless, I agree with their decision to do another and I will definitely be the first in line at the theater!
  • Deb
More Bourne please. We never get tired of watching any of the three movies. They need to concentrate on a good script and not just heavy action scenes. And why is Pamela still after him?
  • Tiffonee
To be completely honest I never thought I would get into the whole matt damon and bourne movies but one day i rented it for my boyfriend and we watched it and honestly it was awesome! so i had to rent the other two since i liked the first one so much and guess WHAT? I LOVE THOSE TOO! i cant wait till they make more because you cant help but like the story line. i love conspiracy movies and this is awesome! i hope they do make more until there is a real ending to waht happens to jason bourne (david webb)! i want to know more about the story!
  • Sher
I look forward with great anticipation to another Bourne film but do NOT think it should be a prequeal. In the third film a relationship was hinted at by Nicky and I think that should be explored.
In the Bourne ultimatum book Bourn'es wife has been kidnapped to force him into a confrontation. I feel that they should follow this storyline with Bourne and Nicky and in that way we could get both a bit of a prequel, a bit of the third book and some closure in which Bourne has some success at establishing some stability and happiness in a personal life. If anyone deserves it it's Jason Bourne! I want to see it.
  • The Norwegian
Fantastic films! except the shaky camera. Probably the best films in that category ever made. Great locations and the best fight scenes I ever seen on screen. The triology is very smart made. This is not a film for rambo fans, but intelligent people who wants intelligent story and action.
I`d love to see a fourth. But it must be produced with care, excellent plot and look towards bournes dark inner side. I dont mind a prequeal.
  • The Norwegian II
Matt Damon is a great bourne!!! He is made fore this caracter.
And the fighting scene with desh in tangier, is the best fightscene ever made!!!
  • Jon
Woo-hoo! Bring it on- Really hip films! Plenty of Ludlom plots to be used for future screenplays.. Ah heck, as long as he gets into a few scrapes and does cool stuff, I'll be happy.
  • Adrian Steve Reyes Mirr
No they should stop while they are ahead.. think of new movies to make.. do not make a fourth one as i feel it will ruin the other movies. The third one ended it, there is nothing left to go through with in a fourth movie
  • lawrance a busow
I would like to see bourne without a top on the next one hes really sexy in these movies..........oww....the bishop said to the actress........oww
  • Stanley B.
Perhaps the fourth installment could explore Bourne's contribution to the Senate Hearings, ie., secret witness for "The People". I'd also like to see his relationship with Nicky Parsons expanded on; her smile at the end of Ultimatum suggested hope.
  • J.Armstrong
I Love the Bourne Series and hope it continues because now that he knows his real identity then it only leads to anticipation to see further in his past!!
  • m m mohr
    YES MORE BOURNE!!!!!!!!
In three they made it appear that Jason and Niki had an affair in Paris befor memory loss. I think a Jason Junior would be great to see.
And maybe retire at the end of four. But then Bond tried to retire several times also.
  • moiann
darn, can't get enough of jason bourne. or matt damon. even if they do bourne series on the tv i'd still watch it.
  • fan
I just can't get enough of Jason Bourne. And f I could write a story about what happened after The Bourne Ultimatum, why would the best writers in Hollywood not?
  • rikin
would def love to see a 4th part
  • Raeci
    Hi,
I was wondering if you were looking for suggestions for the new soundtrack???? Perhaps, a more contemporary sound with Mariah Carey featuring "The Roots". I feel that the movie is lacking a strong musical content that will greatly enhance the record sales. I also feel that if the recorded song is featured in the film it would be a great idea to feature the group at the end!
  • pdebee
I like the idea of a prequel, and I also fully agree with Stanley B. about Jason/David helping with the congressional hearings. He could even be hired as Pamela's secret 'operative' to help clean up 'the organisation' (you don't suppose for one moment that the incumbents are going to give up abusing their power, do you? He may not want to be an assassin anymore, but he might be willing to help clean up the barn...) That should open up plenty of opportunities for both plot and action. The relationship with Nicky could be further developed (and we could finally discover why Nicky told Jason/David that "It was difficult for me, with you", which would enable the appropriate flashbacks to be brought in.) Finally, I also agree with those who stated that we can trust Paul Greenwood & Matt Damon to only proceed with a 4th film if they're confident they can deliver an exciting story worthy of the existing trilogy. Fingers crossed ... ;D
  • John P
I think thats excellent that they are making a 4th Bourne film. I thought the 3 Bourne films so far were the top 3 movies in ages. Between the locations, fast paced action, story, and the acting, it was done so perfectly that all 3 films were definetly my favorite movies to watch over and over again.
  • Erios
Yeah i would love to see another film. I think the Bourne series is excellent and Damon is the right person for the part too.
  • james451959
    I'm ready for a 007 American style.
