One of the true Oscar moments this year happened when host Jon Stewert ushered Best Song co-winner Marketa Irglova back onto the stage after she had been cut off by the music before the commercial break. And thank god she got her chance. Irglova’s speech was moving and inspirational. If you missed it, watch the speach below.
Glen Hansard: “Thanks! This is amazing. What are we doing here? This is mad. We made this film two years ago. We shot on two Handycams. It took us three weeks to make. We made it for a hundred grand. We never thought we would come into a room like this and be in front of you people. It’s been an amazing thing. Thanks for taking this film seriously, all of you. It means a lot to us. Thanks to the Academy, thanks to all the people who’ve helped us, they know who they are, we don’t need to say them. This is amazing. Make art. Make art. Thanks.”
Marketa Irglova: “Hi everyone. I just want to thank you so much. This is such a big deal, not only for us, but for all other independent musicians and artists that spend most of their time struggling, and this, the fact that we’re standing here tonight, the fact that we’re able to hold this, it’s just to prove no matter how far out your dreams are, it’s possible. And, you know, fair play to those who dare to dream and don’t give up. And this song was written from a perspective of hope, and hope at the end of the day connects us all, no matter how different we are. And so thank you so much, who helped us along way. Thank you.”

I noticed that she was cut off when she said something and I was like. WTF? Give her a chance! Then when the commercial was over I saw her back on stage and I felt so happy for her. It was her moment to shine and she finally got it! Good job!

it all comes down to those bastards having to get their commercials in, they dont really give a damn about the show or the art anymore….its all about the money, truly sad

I was very happy when they won. That is a great song from a great movie.
A well deserved win.
February 25th, 2008 at 1:11 am
Damn. That was the highlight of the night for me. Real class.

Truly a touching moment.
Hey, here’s an idea… instead of stupid montages and whatnot, why not let these people who work their asses off ENJOY their moment in the spotlight. Too many below-the-line people work too hard to be treated like they are at the Os***Music Begins***
WAIT I’M NO–MUSIC SWELLS EVEN LOUDER
Ah fuck it.

I’m with you, Jeff. (The commercial-free, unedited Independent Spirit Awards were 100x better, as usual.)
Can Jon be any more likable? Great stuff … and Marketa is absolutely beautiful.

Totally inspired when I saw this. What a doll.
February 25th, 2008 at 4:50 am
She is right, if you hold into your dreams you will reach that far away star…no matter what, just keep trying.
February 25th, 2008 at 6:00 am
Wow, whoever is responsible (Jon Stewart?) for bringing her back on stage gets a free case of beer! What a graceful moment! The music in that film helps my own seeds of hope sprout a little!

best speech of the night as well.
February 25th, 2008 at 8:02 am
there is a time and a place for the Wrap It Up Box, and this was not it.
February 25th, 2008 at 8:13 am
I liked when jon stewart said man that guy was arrogant. HAHAHA they cut that out of the clip but it was real real funny.
February 25th, 2008 at 8:23 am
the best speeeeech ever.
February 25th, 2008 at 8:45 am
Thank God someone wins an Oscar and DOESN’T thank their agent (Tilda Swanson). Worst speech: Tilda Swason, Marion Cotillard who didn’t/couldn’t thank anyone and the Coen brothers who in 2 seperate wins kept acting like they’re heading off to Auschwitz! ARGH! There needs to be lessons given on making an Oscar speech. Usually the women winning best actress make the worst (see Halle Berry, Charlize Theron, Julia Roberts, Marion Cotillard, etc..) Marketa Irglova’s speech was inspiring, intelligent, thought provoking and eloquent. Thank you!

Definitely the highlight of the night for me! I am so glad these guys beat out the Disney machine. Sure, Enchanted was a fun family film, but the music in Once was in a completely different league. Bravo to the little film from Dublin, I loved that Collin Ferrel (sp?) got misty eyed just introducing them.

That was one of the best Oscar moments ever — when I saw Stewart escort her back onto the stage, I teared up. Obviously, for this couple, for these artists, this was a moment of a lifetime, and we’re lucky that someone let her come back to enjoy it.

Only 19 and able to deliver a thoughtful Oscar speach, calm, cute….Hollywood follow the example!!! Congratulation Marketa and all the best! I hope you will be touring Germany!

This is a beautiful movie. If you haven’t seen it do yourself a favor and go rent it tonight.

This was my year for falling in love with women that aren’t my girlfriend - Ellen Page and Marketa Irglova. Oh man.
February 25th, 2008 at 11:20 am
I was thrilled this song won and love that
John Stewart brought her back out.

I am watching this clip over and over with tears running down my face. Thank you so much for posting this. I really wanted to see this more than “once”, pardon the pun. I couldn’t believe it when Mara got to go back onstage and give her speech. So classy of them to give her that once in a lifetime moment. Way to go Jon, and big hugs and congrats to Mara and Glen. Totally the highlight of the evening.
February 25th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Ethan Coen definitely had the best speeches of the night. Not this crock of rehashed bullshit.
February 25th, 2008 at 2:08 pm
@ Sean (above)
I am a fan of concise speeches, but that is just bad form, shame on you. A man and woman pour their heart out on the biggest night of their lives and to you it is “rehashed bullshit”? You are ridiculous and sad sean.

GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
February 25th, 2008 at 6:47 pm
Highlight of the night for me.

I have to disagree with Sandy. Marion’s speech was lovely. It was great to see someone genuinely shocked by the experience. She wasn’t a blubbering mess like Halle or Gwyneth, she was simply charming.
But Marketa was the best out of everyone.
February 26th, 2008 at 1:18 am
I agree, it was my favorite part of the Oscars that she got to shine and she came back with an amazing speech. Even with all the pressure, she said it best. Good for her.
February 26th, 2008 at 2:16 am
I was glad to see Marketa given the chance to go back onstage to give her thank you speech. I did wonder why the guy didn’t let her speak first. Wouldn’t have hurt to let the ladies go first.
But all’s well that ends well. Their Oscar performance was the first time I heard their song; it’s beautiful in its simplicity and heartfelt emotion.
February 26th, 2008 at 11:03 am
I wish I could find out who was responsible for the great decision to bring her back; I’d like to flood the Oscars with mail commending that person.

How can one save the clip to my own computer so it can be shown to my students?
A computer illeterate. Sigh!
February 26th, 2008 at 12:20 pm
To tell you the truth this speech gave me goosebumps. Without a doubt the highlight of the evening.
also to Ernest Porps,
vixy.net is an excellent website for saving clips. All you have to do is choose your format, paste the link of the youtube clip, and wallah!
