I’ve been told that a Cloverfield Sequel is pretty much dead for now (not to say it can’t eventually happen), but JJ Abrams was recently asked about the possibility and here is what he said.
“There is an idea that has come up that… we’re exploring so we’ll see if it’s worth doing then hopefully we’ll get a chance to do it.”
When asked if there will be another monster, Abrams replied:
“Another monster, yeah, another sort of a interesting way in but we have some cool ideas and Drew Goddard, the writer and Matt Reeves the director have sort of cooked something up so we’re . . . you know hopefully that’ll get a chance to happen.”
Note the use of the words “exploring”, “chance” and “hopefully”. Abrams also insinuated that if a sequel were to happen, that it might not employ the same first person handheld video camera point of view.
“At a certain point it’s the kind of thing probably wears out it’s welcome you know, for some people probably while watching the movie, you know what I’m saying?”
Discuss: If they were to make Cloverfield 2, and it were not filmed in the POV style, what could set it apart from general monster movies?

Hm, I would hope that JJ is smart enough not to let go of what made cloverfield so unique while still giving the audience something new. So I don’t see him going the “traditional” route, or at least not in the likes of any of the Godzilla movies. He’s going to have to do something different.

Traditional route? Makes me think Blair Witch 2. Remember how that worked out.
One of my favorite things in Cloverfield was the fleeting news coverage on TV. I’d like to see the sequel use that as it’s way in to whatever story they tell next.

I’m thinking it’d be cool to see a documentary style telling of the story.
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:40 pm
I think a sweet idea would actually be to sort of revolve around the same monster (not the exact same story) but somehow from a broader perspective, possibly the military. We have witnessed the monster attack from the street level, but to experience it from the outside would be awesome. Really give the audience the experience from both angles of the monster.

i think they should keep the POV handi cam style and do something like a documentary from beginning to end….make the first 3rd a recap of what happened the night it attacked through an outsider that witnessed it but didnt have a first hand account like rob and beth…have news reports showing the destruction it caused and how it enventually got taken down….then go into the history of the monster and then have it come alive or have another one hit the city in search of the first one in an angry rage…it would be cool if they captured some of the parisites and kept them alive to study their origins and maybe get some insite on where the big monster came from…there are endless possibilies for the sequel because the first was such a broad stroke of that reality of a monster sized monster destroying nyc….if tickets went on sale today i would be first in line…thanks…thanks alot Pete…keep us updated…and if u have any non blurry pics of Two Face from the Dark Knight…or even more action figure picture from NY toyfare that would be awesome…alright post soon…DARK KNIGHT IN THEATERS JULY 18th…BE THERE OR BE SQUARE>>>WHY SO SERIOUS!!!!!!?

lay it to rest man. cloverfield should not have a sequel.
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:51 pm
The reason why the studio isn’t interested in doing a cloverfield sequel is because the movie had no legs at boxoffice. It tumbled more than 65% on 2nd weekend even with good reviews which shows that the movie was a highly overrated piece of crap movie.
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:53 pm
Maybe like a March of the Penguins, but with the monster and the Baby Cloverfields. We could see what they eat, how they reproduce, watch the Baby Cloverfields play-fight, all leading up to the Mama Cloverfield foraging for food beneath skyscrapers and national landmarks. Narrated by Victor Garber.
February 22nd, 2008 at 10:59 pm
Jojo..it made $150 million total. It wasn’t a piece of crap imo. (Go see Meet the Spartnas). Hopefully the sequel will explain what the monster is from.
February 22nd, 2008 at 11:00 pm
I think a neat idea would be to shoot it from the Monster’s POV. Like the FPS sequence in DOOM, Crappy movie but a cool concept.
Not sure if it would be anything more than one giant special effects film. Unless there was a recurring person who somehow remained unkillable.

its good to know that JJ is not quickly jumping into the bandwagon of sequels and milked cloverfield to dry. I guess the reason that I’m writing this is because from a movie fan point of view is that Cloverfield have a lot of potentials that could go into any directions and possibilities, Finally, a movie that intrigued me to care about it before and after it was released. Sprinkled with lot’s hidden surprises on the net.
JJ’s have open up a new style of movie making and I hate to see it go to waste underneath piles of other upcoming crappy big budget hollywood movie.
Cloverfield 2 or not, I’ll be on line to see his next movie.

I wonder would it be possible to extend the 9/11 metaphor? Maybe make the next movie appear to be like a number of the old “Godzilla Vs. Fill-In-The-Blank” flicks but have the two monsters represent the US and Al Queda.

Please do not make this movie. Why can’t people leave shit alone?

I’m having a really hard time trying to decide whether or not i’d like to see a sequel to this one.
One side of me is saying ah damn it, let the sleeping dog be. You know? It was such a original movie and i believe that a sequel could destroy it.
But on the other hand, i love monster movies and i’d love to see more of it. You know, where did it come from? How did it get there? Is there more of them? Why did it attack? And what about the parasites? As ‘TheKillingJoke’ said, it would be cool if they captured some of the parisites and kept them alive to study their origins and stuff of that nature, right?
If thers is gonna be a Cloverfield 2, i’d like to see it in a kind of documentary style. Clips from the news, info from the military and other people who survived the attack.
Gah, i cant make up my mind about this one.

Okay, here’s my take on a sequel. In order to make it successful it needs what most good films need: character development. Oddly enough I was just thinking about this the other night when mulling over the 1997 (?) remake of Godzilla. The FX were pretty decent in that film and quite a bit of fun. What mucked it up though were the flimsy excuses for characters and some silly love interest subplot. I say give me Cloverfield 2 (even the same monster could work) but give me characters I care about and then let me enjoy the destruction of the city.

JJ fanboys get over yourselves. The movie was ok. Not great, not very memorable, just ok. Lost is mediocre at best. I never used to be into the whole JJ hating/bashing thing, but after all the hype surrounding Cloverfield, and my how disapointing it was, I just may start. ST is his shot to redeem himself and as each day passes I worry more and more that he will screw that up too.

straight to dvd

@alexfromqueens Lost mediocre? now I know your’e stupid and your opinion doesn’t count….go watch gilmore girls or something
February 24th, 2008 at 9:46 pm
@John
I’m sorry that I’m not enraptured by sub par story telling and arcs that go nowhere. In truth there isn’t much on TV nowadays that is really worthy of praise and I admit that LOST stands out amongst the garbage, but come off it fanboys.

@alexfromqueens
yeah yeah whatever you say troll
February 25th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
According to Wikipedia, a sequel is confirmed for 2009, but then again people change and add things on that site so better not believe it right away, but I will say this, isn’t a little too soon? two, three years at least
February 25th, 2008 at 3:05 pm
@John
I’m just trying to give my opinion on a public forum here. If you had an issue with what I had to say, you could have counter argued on the topic, instead you decide to say this
“now I know your’e stupid and your opinion doesn’t count”
“yeah yeah whatever you say troll”
Maybe I am a troll (I’ve been reading this blog for quite some time but only started commenting recently) but what does that have to do with anything?

I agree that they shouyld make number 2 about the army’s prespective cause some army peeps have cameras on their guns or helmets so that would be cool.
May 4th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
I think they should definitely make a cloverfield 2. The dvd special features said that the monster was a baby who was looking for its mother…? so a second film may have a reunion. I would hate to see what the mother looked like then. They should either take it from other peoples persepective of the same night or follow the guy on the bridge we thought died, or they should pickup somewhere in the movie and go past the ending so we know what happens. There are too many unanswered questions.

The sequel should definetly be a documentary style film that sheds light on backstory and origins from a military/government standpoint. Personaly I loved everything about the film..the visuals, the vagueness, the tragic ending. But those qualities are also the reason a lot of viewers disliked the film. So i feel a doc. could definetly balance things out and perhaps even enhance the first film…but only if done right. Otherwise fuck it.

this is all fine and dandy but…WHY IS IT CALLED CLOVERFIELD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
