I’ve been excited about Carter Smith’s big screen adaptation of Scott B. Smith’s novel The Ruins since the project was first announced. The previous adaptation of a Smith novel, A Simple Plan directed by Sam Raimi, was an incredibly underrated character piece, and an even better thriller. The Ruins is more of a horror thriller than a character piece and stars one of my favorite actresses, Jena Malone. Malone is usually confined to interesting indie films which never get mainstream play. But this project is quite the opposite.
Than came the red band trailer, which can be viewed below. I think I may have lost complete faith in this film. Some of the sequences look downright stupid. And what was the point of releasing a red band trailer if you’re not going to show some extreme scares?
Discuss: What do you think about The Ruins red band movie trailer?

That was a rather disappointing (and poorly edited) trailer. The green-band was put together better, and, honestly, captured the tone of the novel better. I don’t know about this one. The book is interesting (so far, I’m only about a third of the way through it), but some of the changes that appear to have been made seem to fundamentally undermine the story’s structure. Strange. I’ll see this, but it has the potential to be either quite good, or stupid and exploitative.

what. Jacobi. said.
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:30 am
Stupid. and. Exploitative.

i know the trailer seems weak, but you gotta trust me - THE BOOK IS TERRIFYING! i can also see a couple changes they’ve made, but only minor ones, hopefully they didn’t stray too far cuz its some freaky shit.

the book sucked — movie doesn’t look much better.

Someone tell modern day movie directors (and trailer editors) that fast-cutting unscary material does not make it scary or even thrilling.

I was freaked out a little bit by the green band trailer. This was dull and generic. Meh.

I’m in the minority here, but I think this looks great. Early word has it this one is gore heavy and consistently tense. I’ll be there April 4th for sure.

red band trailers = unrated dvd’s of PG13 movies

Red band eh? Lets see, no blood or gore, no swearing, no nudity…I guess these guys didn’t see the AVP2 or Rambo red band trailers. Anyway looks like a good flick to take a girl to…unless she vomits at crappy movies.
The Ruins. Ruining theaters this April…

Piece. of. crap.
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:26 am
Oh no……….RINGWORM! :0
February 22nd, 2008 at 9:28 am
so do we have any confirmation on whther there’ll be nudity? If so, it might at least warrant torrenting

I’ve been following the project a while now, as “The Ruins” is one of my favorite novels. I seem to be in the minority in saying that I really like the trailer, even if there isn’t a whole lot of gore. But really, if they gave away a lot of the gore, they’d be spoiling the biggest set pieces in the film. This isn’t like Rambo or AVP:R; there isn’t a high body count, and innocent people don’t get shot and killed every minute.
That being said, test screening reports are extremely positive, and numerous horror media outlets have been screened a few clips which were described as “bordering incredible”.

I’m unclear as to what is meant by the terms ‘”red band” or “green band” trailer. Nor. do. I. get. why. posters. here. write. sentences. like. this. It looks moronic. That aside, one cannot judge a movie based on a very poorly edited all too fast paced trailer, though many here apparently do. Maybe I’m just too old fashioned.

@ Thomas Klem
Red Band is an ‘R’ rated trailer (note the red rating screen). Green Band is any other rating.
As for the. Awkard. Sentence structure. of this thread…I think its a stab at the narrator of this trailer. Who pauses. After every. Few fucking words.
I agree with you though. A lot of bad trailers turn out to be awesome movies!

still making this films stupid teen terror films… europe will raise again! :D
February 22nd, 2008 at 1:17 pm
soooooooo dumb. dumb dumb. The only reason this terrible book was made into a terrible movie is because Ben Stiller is friends with the author. A Simple Plan is good though.
February 22nd, 2008 at 3:41 pm
Actually colecovision, I was just doing a bad comic book guy impression …
February 22nd, 2008 at 6:59 pm
A Simple Plan was a utterly brilliant film , on TV the other day so Ruins could be okay

Seriously, why does this classify as a red band? Is it the knife to skin? Or the things moving under the skin? Perhaps the R-rated smoldering of Young Cole Hauser? The world may never know.
