We here at Slashfilm have been pressing Warner Bros. to release The Lost Boys 2: The Tribe theatrically for some time. Tonight, the first image of a vampire from the film has surfaced at STYD, and I’m a little iffed. While the images of Corey Feldman’s return as Edgar Frog show promise, as did the recent announcement that Corey Haim will definitely be in the film, this image screams direct-to-DVD to me. Compare the shot below of Kiefer Sutherland’s vampire, David, from the 1987 classic to this steakhead vampire above.
Now, the vampires in the sequels are reportedly surfers, which might explain the rather cheesy subtitle. This reminds me, hey studio people: simplify it to The Lost Boys 2. The original title’s inspiration is the Lost Boys in Peter Pan, who were already a tribe of sorts. Adding “The Tribe” is just a bad sign for America, really. And as we all know, surfers go two ways: steakhead jock idiots and “divine princes of decadence” like Bunker Spreckels. And then there’s Bodhi from Point Break who mixed them together and pulled it off, which is as hard to do as looking cool in a pair of crocs while working at Wal-Mart.
The necklace on this vampire is beyond cheesy. When The Lost Boys came out, the biker vampires in that flick reached highs of coked-out ’80s overindulgence and super-cool matched only by Axl Rose. Back to this new image: there’s also the tiki torch in the back, which connotes “steakhead surfer stereotype” and teen shows like The O.C. And is the vampire wearing a punk-studded bracelet? I can’t tell. If so, stupes. He’s also bald, which is Kelly Slater-ish, but also reminds me of Neil Strauss in The Game and that’s always a sign to stay away from something. Surfers have rock star hair, it’s a fact, why not utilize that, while paying a lil’ homage to the Aqua Net-junkie ’80s originals?
The fangs are a little too pronounced. The blood can go either way. This photo was released to satisfy the gore hounds. The girl’s bikini/dress is kind of stupid, generic and unhot, and The Lost Boys is about sex, drugs, rock ‘n’ roll and staying young forever, maybe in that order. I’m not giving up on the film, but after all of the “we get it” and the “original is a classic, we won’t screw this up” promises from screenwriter Hans Rodionoff and director P.J. Pesce, this image is disconcerting because it doesn’t get it. You can still make this sequel with a modest budget and have it be awesome, there is no excuse. If this turns out to be The Lost Boys with Seth Cohen and it does go to theaters after fans fought ferociously for it to, prepare for a battle comparable to, I dunno, Axl Rose vs. Tommy Hilfiger.

If a photo is worth 1,000 words, I am still 500 short. This image was released for a reason: to get a reaction from horror fans, Lost Boys fans and movie fans.
If this was the first photo of a new Batman suit and it looked off, we’d already have essays about it in /Film’s comments. Lost Boys obviously has a smaller following, but this sequel has been decades in the making, so the vampires should reflect that passing of time accordingly while still sharing characteristics and attitude with the original bloodsuckers.

Sheesh, calm down a bit. It’s only one image and for me it doesn’t really reveals much one way or the other. The Backgorund Vampires in the original film weren’t that elaborate designed either and to be frank, i always felt that the design of the vampires was kind of a weak point anyway. What sold it was Kiefers and Ed Hermanns performance, not the rather common look of the make-up. I’d worry more if they managed to come up with a decent script that reflects and tries to recapture all the things that where fun in the first film, which might be quite a challenge, considering the cast is now considerably older and might have quite a bit of their chemistry and charm. I could live with more pedestrian make up effects, if the story, music and overall style while be in the vein of the old movie…

Patrick Swayze’s character in Point Break was named Bodie, not Brody, you know, sort of a rip off from the Hindu god’s names, being that he’s the “spiritual leader” of the surfer group.

I gave that image to shocktillyoudrop.com in the hope of swaying the negative fans but its clear to see that some just can’t be pleased!
I think it look promising. If more people would get behind this flick then maybe it will actually get the big screen release that it deserves!!

I know I’m gonna take a lot of slack from this, but I just re-watched The Lost Boys a few weeks ago and it seriously was terrible.
There is so much about that movie that doesn’t stand the test of time, and I totally see why it’s taken so long to come up with a sequel. (although other, poorer movies have had the green light for several sequels in the past).
If everyone was given the option of watching the original FOR FREE before the sequel comes out, the sequel would definitely be a straight to DVD release because the original isn’t very good.

A lot of Us fans fought and petitioned to keep a sequel from being made all together. Joel Schumacher did’t want this made either. At least his Lost Girls, Bi!!!es with fangs idea was better then surfer boys.
I would not pay to see this in a theater, probly wouldnt see it on DVD either.

lost boys was an awesome movie and it will be tough to even imagine a part 2 without alot of the same cast in first lost boys.without using some of same actors based from first film i predict it probably wont even touch the first movie.

I think that they screwed this movie over a bit. The vampires look retarded…literally, they have face deformities. Why couldn’t they just stick to the good ‘ol contact lenses and vampire teeth. Now these vampires look like the creepy ones from Dusk Til Dawn. But i still can’t wait to watch it. Still a big fan of Lost Boys no matter what.
