According to AICN, Ryan Reynolds (Definitely, Maybe) will definitely be suiting up to play anti-hero Deadpool in 2009’s first X-Men spinoff X-Men Origins: Wolverine. Reynolds has been attached to the role for some time, including the character’s own flick. This news arrives after several bits of casting info for the film have popped up as of late. Before we get into that, I don’t understand why fanboy sentiment runs so high for Reynolds in this role. I mean, check out the image above (and yes, I liked the dude in The Nines).
Film School Rejects reports that The Blob, one of the more obese villains in comic lore, is set to appear in the Gavin Hood-directed summer tent-pole as well. What’s more, their source says the character will appear as an actor in a fat suit (as opposed to CGI) and pegs the villain’s weight at around 800-1,200 pounds (producers want the latter), which is several milkshakes past his comic book weight of 510. In the comics his skin and fat can absorb missiles, and cannot be punctured, making him a challenge to Logan. Has anyone tried middle school insults? No actor was named, but let’s hope it’s not Mike Myers.
As for the mercenary William Stryker, played previously in the X-Men films by Brian Cox, actor Danny Huston (30 Days of Night, The Kingdom) is set to play a younger version of the character according to JoBlo, against rumors that Dexter’s Michael C. Hall was a lock for the part. Lastly, giving Wolverine a little relief from all of these heavily armed antagonists (also Liev Schreiber’s Sabretooth) is the flick’s love-interest, Kayla Silverfox aka Silver Fox, “one of the few female victims of the Weapon X project,” and IESB says she’ll be played by redheaded actress Lynn Collins (Bug, The Number 23).
I didn’t expect this project to skimp and actually thought it’d be cool to see a less crowded X-Men flick, but The Blob news is definitely a surprise. Hugh Jackman wasn’t kidding when he said this would be on the scale (if not bigger) of a regular X installment. No need to worry that this means too many villains in the pot just yet, especially if Hood brings a fresh creative direction as expected.
Discuss: What kind of vibe are you getting from this project thus far?Â

Until now I thought it was going to be great.

Regarding Reynolds/Deadpool, Spider-man looks pretty buff in the comics too but Tobey Maguire worked really well in the first two movies. Besides, Reynolds could probably fit the part quite well both in acting and physique: http://farm2.static.flickr.com/1028/572345181_1477baa674_o.jpg

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is spot on perfect (I’d kill for a solo Deadpool follow up movie with him, even if it was direct to video). The rest of the casting I could take or leave.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool is some of the best casting i can think of for a comic book movie. I guess, speaking as a “fanboy”, its exciting because hes done superhero stuff before, and Deadpool is a smart ass, which Reynolds can do.

I’m really sad that Michael C. Hall isn’t gonna be Stryker :(

Are you kidding? Mike Myers would be awesome as The Blob… You have obviously lost touch, Pete. :P

Neil: Hunter posted this one, not me. But I also tend to disagree. I’m pretty sure that Mike Myers and awesome haven’t been used in the same sentence in the last five years.

How funny, that yesterday there was a Ryan Reynolds article on /Film about his career, and now this announcement. I have to admit though, that whenever I watch a superhero film now, I can’t picture that person in any other role except for that superhero of that particular movie. Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner are an exception. But whenever I see Tobey Maguire or John Leguizamo, I still think of Spider-man or Super Mario Brothers. Ryan Reynolds might loose that edge of him being a comedic and dramatic actor if they can’t whip up some witty dialogue for Deadpool.

it’s deadpool, with no witty dialogue he’s a fish on land for god’s sake.
Have faith, it’s deadpool, so dialogue is a given.

I hear you, but this movie is about the origins about wolverine, not about Deadpool. Not all the focus could be brought onto him. I don’t want to compare Deadpool to SM3’s Venom, but I am hoping that it doesn’t turn out that way.
They’re so many complex characters in the Marvel Universe that need their own film for that matter. I have been waiting for some word on Gambit, but nothing has risen.

I actually really like the idea of Reynolds as Deadpool. I think it’s something he can pull off. As far as the vibe of the movie? Sounds like they’re trying to shove way too many characters into it, which was one of the giant problems with SM3 and X-men3.

oh well..
Deathstroke was much always so much cooler anyway

They’re going to cast Mike Myers just because you jinxed it Hunter…good work. ;P But really…if they do….ugh…if i have to go through hearing “get in my belleh” all over again…I’ll be hurt.

I wonder if they’ll have Deadpool break the 4th wall in the movie

the movies is very good I very like,

just announced that a guy from Friday night lights is playing gambit. Depending on how they weave all these characters in, this movie could be very very cool! Reynolds would be great as deadpool, so long as they don’t get the disasterous ‘venom treatment’. Hunter, I’m curious why yer not seeing reynolds as deadpool? He bulked up pretty good for blade & his comic talent is perfect for the merc.

looks like the cloverfield monster in a spider man suit.

Filmdrunk says that Kevin Durand will be portraying The Blob.

Ryan Reynolds is hilarious, just naturally, in a very sarcastic way.
He also doesn’t have trouble putting on muscle (see: Blade Trinity).
I’m sure he’ll be great in the role.

I just read an article recently where he (Ryan Reynolds) said he would play the role if asked. He didn’t say definitely. Also, note that the article referenced as the source for this one does not state him as a pure definite for the role either and has no source link.

Im glad he is doing a movie where he is doing something else than comedy or love movies. Dont get me wrong, hes great doing those films but he gets to show his off all the hard work that he puts in the gym. Id love to play a super hero..Atleast I got to be his body double rescently.
