With Hollywood running short on ideas, Paramount greenlit a computer animated movie based on the classic trippy 80’s cartoon series The Smurfs (Truth is that the Smurfs are actually 50 years old, having first appeared in comic strips).
The first images from this upcoming big screen computer animated adaptation appeared in the Happy Smurfday Euro Tour, planned to coincide with the Smurf’s 50th birthday. We’ve composited the photos found on MushroomVillage (via ComingSoon) to bring you one big panoramic photo (as it was originally presented). Click on the photo above to enlarge.
There is also footage in a news report video on France3.fr which shows artists working on the new movie. Check out some stills below.

Discussion: Would you pay $9 to relive your childhood and see The Smurf Movie on the big screen?

I think you have a typo in the title of this story.
“First Look: The Smurf’s Movie”
No apostrophe needed.

Ronny, thanks for the quick catch!
February 17th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
I certainly wouldn’t. The Smurfs are scary.
February 17th, 2008 at 8:38 pm
Smurfs are wack. Hell no. Besides they did an animated Smurf movie already back in the day. Call me when they remake “The Real Ghostbusters”
February 17th, 2008 at 8:44 pm
I read something recently where a critic was discussing Hollywood remaking crappy movies and maybe that would be a good idea. Don’t know if that’s totally solid, but I wish they’d do that with cartoons from my childhood. What about a movie based on Turbo Teen…or maybe that cartoon with Mr. T and those creepy aerobic kids?
February 17th, 2008 at 8:46 pm
Turbo Teen. Jeeuh!
February 17th, 2008 at 8:58 pm
Now that is just stupid. I hope it bombs.
February 17th, 2008 at 9:00 pm
Nope.
February 17th, 2008 at 9:39 pm
Depends…how hot will Smurfette be?
and no I’m kidding…this will be worse than Transformers…which I hated by the way
February 17th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
Thumb has zero interest in seeing this film. But my kids will want to see it. I call it a $25 Saturday afternoon nap.

Smurftacular, I cant smurfin wait to smurf that out
February 18th, 2008 at 12:44 pm
i can’t smurfin’ believe they’re using 3ds max for this…
February 18th, 2008 at 5:40 pm
It’s this the one where they’ve added a whole buch of other female smurfs to it?
February 18th, 2008 at 5:59 pm
I wonder how they’re going to smurf this one up?
Make the smurfs purple? change the shape or the shrooms? It wouldn’t be that much of a disaster, The transformers movie spat on my childhood, a smurfs movie would be chuckling @ it…

Warner Brothers should try to beat them to the punch by releasing a Snorks movie two months beforehand.
February 18th, 2008 at 7:33 pm
I have to ask, whats with this rash of “reliving your childhood?” deal going on? Its not for our demographic, its for the kids. You can enjoy it and suspend belief for an hour and a half for 9 bucks a pop but in the end you know that its not going to be the same nor can it ever be.
February 18th, 2008 at 7:40 pm
I never thought of that series as “trippy”.
February 18th, 2008 at 8:19 pm
This movie is a waste of time.. the only way I would see it is they gave out mushrooms with the movie.. and it still would not be trippy!
February 18th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
Gargamel and Asrial better look as spot on like these shots already do! Don’t over do it just because you can.
February 18th, 2008 at 9:21 pm
SMURFTACULAR!!!!
February 18th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
Awesome. The Smurfs are childhood Saturday morning goodness and I will be first in line to take the godchildren.
February 19th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
Smurf yeah! Dr. Death is a big smurfin fan. all you haters can go smurf yourselves!
May 25th, 2008 at 1:52 pm
I think the smurfs movie will be so cool.

This is wonderful news, I love the Smurfs & look forward to the movies, future DVD releases and the new animated series.
**Keep in mind “people” who leave negative comments about a topic have an interest in the issue, otherwise they would not be there!**

Its interesting. But why has it taken so long. Smurfs came out in 81 that’s 27 years ago. Same with transformers and fraggle rock. Why has it taken decades to make these movies.
June 10th, 2008 at 4:38 pm
I think this is a real good idea
June 11th, 2008 at 12:15 pm
They already remade “The Real Ghostbusters”. It was called “Ghostbusters” and came out before the cartoon.
June 11th, 2008 at 3:04 pm
i happen to love and adore smurfs
i would see the movie! twice if it was good!!!
June 12th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
I cant wait to see the smurfs, that was a good cartoon, and anyone who is acting like a smurfing idiot can just go smurf themselves you losers…
June 13th, 2008 at 6:01 am
Smurf movie?? Why so long?? well folks, you can only polish a turd so much. I say this skips Blue Ray and goes straight to Beta Max!
June 18th, 2008 at 12:52 am
smurfs are world wide. This movie will not only do well in the states but also over seas. To those that do not know much about them. they have never stopped making those lovable hugable smurfs.
