I think George Lucas made the original trilogy a bit wimpy in the remastered edition. Also, the characters of the prequels didn't have that special chemistry as the ones in the original trilogy had.

Just like in Star Trek, I found the cast of DS9 worked well together, whereas Voyager... not at all. The Cast of characters can totally make or ruin a series / movie, and this is what happened with the prequels. Natalie Portman and so on didn't feel like in the right place. Not to diss any of them, but... my opinion. Heh.

To me, this Doc shouldn't be about fanboy love for the prequels. It should be about how the Man in Flannel obviously has very little respect for his fans.

Example: Crappy Special Editions come out on DVD. Lucas shrugs, says "you might as well buy them b/c that's the only way you're going to get them."

So everyone buys them.

Then the fucker double dips and RELEASES THE ORIGINAL CUTS ON DVD. Gee Lucas, way to extort $100 out of people instead of $50.

Hi folks,

I'm the director of the film, and I just wanted to say that I read so many great comments here that I hope many of you will consider sending us interviews. We definitely want to hear from you! All you need to do is follow the simple guidelines on our website.

I mean, this whole "Lucas raped my childhood" stuff is more fitting for AICN methinks. In fact, that's why I avoid that site, the crying.

First you expressed hatred towards the new Indy trailer. Then you made smug (and largely inaccurate) comments about the new Clone Wars movie. And now this.

Hunter, is it safe to say that you are just a run of the mill Lucas hater?

Goerge Lucas on trial by the people?! That's the greatest idea since Han shooting first!

In general I loved the first movies because they were Star Wars. I love Star Wars as a whole... I did however dislike Jar-Jar, Jake Lloyd and Hayden Christensen... seriously... I know he wanted unknowns to play the young Darth Vader but he could have at least picked 2 people who had some skill... didn't they hold auditions? There was actually a documentary on episode 1 that showed the sentiment toward Jake Lloyd by some of the others working on the movie. In the documentary, Jake is in a sound booth and they were showing him reading lines and in the background of the shot you can see one of the people behind the glass in mixing booth doing his thing/directing him/whatever it was... Jake (with his back to this guy) leans up to the microphone, cups his hands around it and says something like "Jarrrrr-Jarrrrrrr keeppp yourr haaands awayy from the energyyyy bands"(can't remember the line exactly but it's from the scene while they're tuning up the pod racer and Jar-Jar zaps his head) he read this line so horribly that you see the guy in the other room shrink down and slap himself in the forehead with both hands very hard (for a good mental image just think of sitting at your desk at work and just realizing you have forgotten the most important thing you've ever needed at home) I’m sure that that guy wasn’t shown on purpose… it was probably something that slipped past the editors. However, it has stuck in my mind and in my opinion has shown that Lucas was one of very few people who actually thought that kid could act.

Other than that I mostly just hate the changes made to 4, 5 and 6... Greedo shooting first, replacing the puppets with CGI, Hayden's face being inserted over Vader's... seriously... leave perfect alone!

I don't think he was ever as much of a "genius" as he was made out to be. We were kids when we saw the first set of movies and they blew us away. But we grew up and it was no longer possible to replicate the experience. The original 3 certainly set a trajectory for my life, but I can never see them, or the new 3, especially the new 3, like that again. I think much of George's success was an accident of timing. And now he is stuck in an untenable position because he never was the creative genius that millions of people wanted him to be. If he was there should be hell of a lot more kick ass "George Lucas" movies out there. But there ain't. For years he played to his strengths on the production side of things, which is where he should have stayed, but age and vanity overtook his reason and he came to believe the myth of himself and tried to recreate the magic. And instead he inadvertently burst the bubble for a lot of us who are unable to see it the same as we did as children. I really hoped for this return to small stories he talked about, but now I am suspecting he doesn't have any in him hence the almost reflexive return to familar territory. I just think the man is a victim of his own success.

There are basically two types of George Lucas haters:

1)	People who no longer like what George Lucas is doing with Star Wars but feel compelled to buy it anyway. They want to force him to stop making any new stuff, even if other people enjoy it, because they are too weak to just ignore it.

2)	People who think they know better than George Lucas what should be done with Star Wars. They believe they have the right to force him to do things that he is not interested in because they liked his earlier stuff and are not creative enough to make anything.

It is possible that this documentary may be about people who feel that greater art could have been created or more money made if only George had done things differently. I suspect that this documentary is more about extreme George Lucas haters and lovers and not about the rational vast majority of fans out there.

George is riding this Bantha to death. Let the SW universe continue in comics and books, we really don't need to be further disappointed by the movies we can't stop going to see. He knows we'll spend our money, so that's why he does it.
OT for me, all the way.

IV V VI - Yes
I II III - No

For the I Don't Get It crowd. You might be to young, you might be to old, you might just not have been interested at the time or now. But for me the original trilogy and their merchandising seemed to be ever present in my formative years and I enjoyed the hell out of it.

I don't know if they are masterpieces or not (probably not), but something about them latched on to me and hasn't let go. Have I played the video games? No. Read the books. Nope. Star wars bed sheets, etc...? Nope. Gone/go to conventions or make it a life style? Negative!

Do I often have the original trilogy playing in the background while I get on with life. Yes,and I don't think I'm the only one.

... and Lando Han is in the running of boys names for our upcoming. The wife isn't crazy about it but it was that or Luke "Star Destroyer" which would have to bring some school yard cred with it.

For those interested the original theatrical releases are available ripped from digital laser disk on the pirate bay. Search for Star Wars LD.

Every computer generated effect in the "special editions" sticks out like modern car driving through the opening battle of "Gladiator".

Star Wars was credible without computers. I'd like to remember the trilogy as when they were released. I respect George Lucas as a filmmaker, but for tweaking a well known film series after the fact without keeping the original versions preserved also was a mistake on his part.

After the public considers a film (as is) a work of movie history, its not his baby anymore. He may toy with new cuts of the Star Wars trilogy ,but it should be a special feature on a DVD and not a replacement to its original.

I'd rather not be stuck with a colorized version of Casablanca because that's the only version in print.
Anyone disagree?

I too enjoy Star Wars on VHS and it's my preferred way to view the original films. Some movies are just better in shitty VHS. Blu-ray can make certain movies seem like you're observing the most crystal clear aquarium ever and it bugs me out. Especially horror movies. I want that "fuzz" you mention. I like that "unreality." But with Star Wars, the "horrible special editions" are also part of this preference.

Perhaps this doc will be cathartic for many. There is def rage out there, I agree.

@ Kapit

Star Wars has not been fun for many for a long time and that's not by choice. The prequels were, like, watching Michael Jordan play baseball in the pros for five years. Heartbreaking for many. I, for one, will never say the words "raped my childhood." I agree, that's a ridic hyperbole. But they are a travesty and total bummer.

Rambo (Rambo IV) wasn't given a free pass at all on /Film. The movie and Sly gave Rambo fans what they wanted and brought new, crackling ideas to the table. It worked hard but effortlessly to satisfy and it blew many fans' expectations away.

As for your "Meet the Spartans Trilogy" analogy, umm, please don't repeat that again because it might become a campaigning reality like Beetlejuice. But would most people like to see The Godfather I and II be the end all be all, or, would they prefer the third film to have happened...or, more appropriately, how about a Godfather 4-6 and more video games?

"The original films are eternal, cinematic treasures."

No, they were NOT! Don't get me wrong, I still love the original trilogy to pieces, but I do this through a childhood, romantic shimmer. Then we grew up and hoped that the new movies would capture the very same magic we felt as kids - How could it?

I stopped recommending even the OT to grownups who haven't seen it yet because they will never get it if they didn't grow up with it.

IMHO, of course. :)

Yes, Space Balls gets better with age. No, we don't need a sequel. But, a prequel...

Oh and Kapit...everyone loved Rambo as opposed to the Star Wars prequels because...and heres a shocker now...The ORIGINAL Rambos kinda sucked...and this one was just one big steaming pile of garbage as well, but guess what, it was fun to watch.

...And plus Hayden Christensen wasn't in Rambo...and trust me, that truly does add about a billion point in movie cred to Rambo...

The man actually ruined my image of Darth Vader forever.

I think this is an amazing idea...which I think that i want to be a part of.

I have ranted for years about the lackluster prequels, absolutely HORRIBLE "special editions" (Digital sand...digital fucking sand!!!!!! come on George....). In fact those "Special" editions put such a bad taste in my mouth, that I have since disposed of mine, and will refuse to watch the Original Trilogy in that form. If I want to watch Star Wars, I have to bust out my VCR and pop in those dusty old tapes.

Though it may seem crazy to endure 80's VHS quality shaky/fuzzy picture, and sound crackles, it it still by far worth it to not have to see Hayden Christenson's smug mug grill me at the heartfelt end of the Return of the Jedi.

Yea...thats a bit of a rant...but this is a rage that has been building over the past few years...
