great, my 2 favorite shows, House and 24 gone for a long time.
February 13th, 2008 at 3:38 pm
Those bastards aren’t bringing back the
Bionic Woman or Carpoolers!?!
OH THE HUMANITY!!!!!!!!
February 13th, 2008 at 3:42 pm
This is going to KILL dvd sales this fall for all of these shows next seasons. Nobody is going to want to buy 8 episodes of a show that usually has 20 or more…
Hello Torrents, goodbye DVDs!
February 13th, 2008 at 3:50 pm
But when are they bringing Twin Peaks back?
February 13th, 2008 at 4:09 pm
What the hell? HBO shows not returning to end of this year…why are they showing ads saying that new episodes are airing in March then?
I think we have some information screwed up here a little bit.
February 13th, 2008 at 4:58 pm
Dustin Ravize,
Which HBO shows are you referring to? I’ll get more information if I can.
Hooper X
February 13th, 2008 at 5:46 pm
I probably see it 3x times a week, but it’s probably shown a lot more, there is joint HBO Series commercial promoting Entourage, Flight of the Conchords, and Big Love. It shows clips from each show, and then displays that new episodes are premiering in March.
I’ll try to grab the commercial when I see it again.
Let me know if you have any information further regarding this as well.
Thanks,
Dustin R.
February 13th, 2008 at 5:58 pm
Just saw the commercial again, It was a compilation showing HBO Series for Entourage, Fight of the Conchords and now it’s showing Extra’s not Big Love. Also it is showing a clip for HBO Films John Adams, All appearing in March.
Nothing on the internet regarding these ads and updates except for a little user-generated news on IMDB in the message boards, other than that, it still leaves me clueless.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
Mad Men? Anything?
February 13th, 2008 at 6:14 pm
No chance at all of Entourage coming back in March, GUARANTEED. They aren’t even in production right now, they have no episodes in the can and even if they got an episode or two done it wouldn’t be ready(from a purely production oriented perspective) for 30 days from the day it wrapped shooting and went to post.
Flight is more than likely linked to the Entourage schedule like it was when it premiered, the second half hour of the hour. So I would expect it to premiere when Entourage does. It is possible that they have episodes ready to go, I haven’t heard anything more than what I reported which is it will return late 08 early 09.
Big Love just finished it’s season’s run not too long ago. I find it difficult to believe they would bring it back in less than a year. But again, I am not sure on this one.
What I do know is that if you look at the webpages for all of these shows on HBO.com, none of them say anything about returning with new episodes, at all, much less March. Generally, when they are as close as we are to March (if in fact they all premiere then), there would be lots of announcements all over HBO.com.
Grab the commercial if you can. I’d love to see it. If I had to guess, I would say that it is a commercial for the return of all three shows, on their regular night in reruns in March and the end of the commercial simply says new episodes coming soon. In fact I think I might have seen that myself.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:18 pm
Thanks Hooper X for shedding some light on that situation, like I said, I will try to snatch that commercial soon and send it in.
I was also questioning that because usually HBO.com does usually give a lot of promotion on their site, and as far as John Adams goes, nothing has been said regarding any other HBO gossip and news.
I appreciate it for taking the time out and investigating,
Dustin R.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:19 pm
Dammit, nothing but bad news for most of the shows that I watch. Dexter, Californiacation, and House.
Though, a little good news for The Office and LOST which I also watch. But I am very upset that the LOST season is only 13 episodes… it was probably 5 months or so since the ending of season 3 to the start of season 4, and now we only get 13 episodes? How long is it going to be until season 5 starts up? another 5 months?
February 13th, 2008 at 6:20 pm
Mad Men is produced by Lionsgate just like Weeds so they were business as usual when the Lionsgate interim deal was signed a few weeks back. Look for it to return around the end of summer.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
One last thing on the HBO stuff, Extras was cancelled/retired if I remember correctly. Gervais didn’t want to do anymore eps and they had one last new Extras that ran December 16 that was the series finale. Yep, got to:
http://www.hbo.com/events/extras_special/
Again, I suspect that commercial is announcing the return of reruns to their old timeslot in March and the end of the commercial is simply a “coming soon” kind of thing.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:37 pm
CARPOOLERS is one of the funniest shows ever. It really sucks that hardly any TV viewers gave it a chance and now it’s dead. Actually…a lot of really funny comedies on ABC have been canceled recently: Help Me Help You, In Case of Emergency and Knights of Prosperity. LAMESICLES.
February 13th, 2008 at 6:39 pm
Poor Jericho, easily my favorite show and i’m crushed that it will take an “act of god” to see it return =(
February 13th, 2008 at 7:55 pm
remember when TYLER DURDEN stared as all the buildings fell and crumbled….I bet that was the best feeling ever because it suppose to be relief from debts and all the shit in this world….imagine all the crumbled buildings building itself back up again….thats how it felt when I read this list of shows that are coming back…..it actually felt sooo goood that I wasn’t obligated and glued to the materialistic tv land. But now they are all back….
24, shield, lost, entourage, heroes….are back!!! I’m planning to spend lot of quality time front of 46′ flat hdtv…. help us all!!!
February 13th, 2008 at 9:02 pm
“Friday Night Lights - Unfortunately, this show is probably dead”
Hooper, Thank you for wording it this way. I think this is one of the best written, most intelligent shows out there right now. And since it is on Friday nights it doesn’t have to require HUGE ratings like a Monday-Thursday Night show would. I hope to see many many more episodes. And I think they have a couple unaired episodes left. I might be wrong though.
I don’t have HBO but the sooner they start FotC up again the sooner I can pick up the DVD. In love with the Conchords!!!!
February 13th, 2008 at 9:48 pm
McLovin,
I am DEEPLY sorry to report that last Friday was the last Friday Night Lights. It is technically still listed as “On the Bubble” but there are a couple of things to consider when guessing it’s fate.
First, Kevin Reilly, the ex-president of NBC was the champion of this show from day one. He barely managed to get it renewed for the second season before he was let go. The probably shot more epsiodes before the strike than any other primetime show knowing full well that the strike would end things.
Second, and I normally reserve my personal opinions here on the site and do my best to report factual information, but I HATE BEN SILVERMAN!!!!! The new president of NBC who has turned NBC into Fox from the early 90’s with hours upon hours of game and reality shows. Nothing this guy has brought to the table since he took over has been worth a damn. He is the brains behind American Gladiator, Celeb Apprentice, The New Knight Rider and on and on. The next original idea he has will be the first one. You can rest assured that he will be the man to put FNL down for good. It’s too good a show for him to associate with.
On a very personal note, I marveled at FNL. It was one of the best scripted dramas of the last 20 years. It’s a shame it never found a following. This comparison is going to sound odd at first but for those of you who watched both, you will understand. On the basis of consistent quality, from episode to episode I would have to say FNL is second only to the HBO series OZ in it’s ability to never take an episode off. Say what you will about the Sopranos and other critically acclaimed shows, all of them had their low points during their run. The Sopranos specifically lost a lot after it’s second season. And while FNL only had about a season and 2/3’s run EVERY episode was a joy to watch. I will miss it dearly. Heck, even my mother, who hates football watched one episode after I forced her to and was hooked until this past Friday when it ended.
Sorry for the long diatribe. I guess I felt like FNL deserved a proper, heartfelt goodbye.
Hooper X
February 13th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
One of the reason my dad likes watching FNL with me (even though he doesn’t watch any other TV), is because he thinks the people in it act believable. The only exception to this was the whole murder subplot. While the story of that subplot was fine, I felt it was one of the rare times where the story strayed into unbelievable. Other than that, it is (was?) a fantastic show and am extremely disappointed that it will join the ranks of great TV shows that have been cancelled.
RIP FNL
Have fun with playing with Firefly and Oz, Jericho will be with you soon
February 13th, 2008 at 9:56 pm
Just to clarify what I found unbelievable about the one storyline was how they chose to dump the body instead of reporting it
February 13th, 2008 at 10:02 pm
Nantook,
Yeah, if I had one storyline I wish they hadn’t run with it was the murder subplot. However, that is what I loved about the show, it was never about one storyline. Even when the murder plot was running, they kept it fresh with Riggins, Coach Taylor, Serracin, Smash and everyone else. But even the murder subploy was light years ahead of the writing on the vast majority of scripted dramas and certainly ANYTHING reality.

Death to American Idol!!
February 13th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
I don’t mind a few reality shows. I’ve watched every season of Survivor but that’s about the only one I watch consistently. Some of the gimmicky ones are fun to watch every once in a while (Fear Factor, that new one Moment of Truth). But the gimmicks get old, and watching countless good tv shows fall to garbage like Dancing with the Stars, Celebrity Apprentice, or any version of a show that involves either finding the next big a) band or b) singer.
For another point, I hate starting to watch new shows because I always think that once I start to get into it, it’ll get the axe. Jericho (to an extent) and Drive are 2 recent examples of shows that I thought were fantastic, but were given an early axe.
February 13th, 2008 at 11:11 pm
Anyone who watched the Pats versus the Giants could tell you that Fox is extremely enthusiastic about Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, and there’s not a chance in heck they’d give it up.
February 13th, 2008 at 11:36 pm
Wil,
At the time of the Super Bowl, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles was one of the last original, scripted dramas that Fox had new episodes left of. House had the superbowl episode and the last new episode of the season the following Tuesday. Prison Break had two new epidodes left at that time. Bones, while a modest hit won’t return until April. That left reality (American Idol, The Moment of Truth, etc…) and Terminator as the only current, primetime shows with more than 2 episodes to come. Consider this:
First, it desparately needed it. After the pilot episode which took in about 18 million viewers, it had fallen off to about 8 million viewers for the episode that followed the Super Bowl the next day. That is a HUGE drop.
Second, it is what one might call a loss leader. The cost of production on a show like this is tremendous. Explosions, car chases, FX cost lots of money. While Fox doesn’t produce the show they pay Warner Bros for the right to broadcast it. The massive cost of producing the show is passed on to the broadcast network. When the ratings don’t justify the cost, Fox has a long history of letting shows like this go. The only reason it will get all 9 episodes on air is the strike. If not for the lack of original, scripted shows due to the strike, Fox would most likely have cut it’s losses much sooner.
Finally, with the strike over, they can go back to pilot production, they can find another show to take up that timeslot that either costs as much and gives much higher ratings or cost a lot less and gets similar ratings.
It’s simple economics and cost benefit analysis. I’m not saying it is formally gone. But let history be your guide. Like I mentioned before, Drive was yanked after two episodes!! Count em, 2 episodes. It wasn’t that it got horrible ratings. It’s that the ratings it did get didn’t justify the cost of production. Fastlane is another. Google it for the reasons why it got yanked. It actually got decent ratings. But decent didn’t justify the massive cost associated with the show so it was yanked.
Here’s a very simple truth from the Drive experience:
It was more cost effective for them to yank Drive and show reruns of House. The House reruns got enough ratings to keep the ship afloat and cost them nearly nothing to run in comparison.
They will run the last four episodes of Terminator but then they will start looking for something to replace it with on the fall schedule.
February 13th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
Opps, my mistake, Drive got 4 episodes to air. But all the same arguments still apply.
February 13th, 2008 at 11:45 pm
I was most surprised that Drive’s series premier was so abysmally low considering that huge amount of advertising that Fox gave it thus proving that even a show with huge amounts of advertising doesn’t necessarily guarantee success

No word on BSG?
February 14th, 2008 at 12:13 am
Has anything been discussed yet between NBC and iTunes? There was quotes direct from Jeff Zucker saying that their might be a turn around after the writers strike to repaid relations between NBC and iTunes distribution
“We’ll put it back together on the TV thing. Everybody lost (when Zucker pulled his content off iTunes). But NBC is a great company, and Apple is a great company,” neither of which make a habit of ignoring their customers’ desires, he said. “Fortunately,” he half-joked, “there was a writers’ strike, so it didn’t matter as much as it might have.”
February 14th, 2008 at 12:15 am
Dan,
I’ll get you an answer about BSG sometime tomorrow. Check back tomorrow night.

February 14th, 2008 at 12:22 am
Dan,
Here’s what I found online:
From Kristin @ Eonline -
“What We’re Hearing: The crown jewel of the Sci Fi Channel should finish out its fourth and final season, but per writer Jane Espenson, it’s almost certain that, schedule-wise, the story will be split into two separate miniseasons. The show completed 14 episodes before the strike hit, and at least the first 10 will air beginning Apr. 4. The second batch could premiere in the fall or even sometime in 2009.”
If I can get more inside information I will. You should check Jane Espenson’s personal blog too. Just Google her and you will find her site. She does regular/daily updates that might have the answers you are looking for.

Yeah FNL was definately one of the most creative shows I have seen. I mean, yeah the murder subplot was way out there, but at the same time I was hooked and wanted to know what would happen to Landry and Tyra. And Landry’s emotions and realism are phenomenol. The cast was a young fresh face that many peopel had not seen before, and may never again.
That sucks there are no new episodes left. It was just left kinda out there. I mean no closure no nothing. What really happens with Smash, what about the playoffs, Riggs and Lyla, Saracen’s meltdown, Street’s kid, do Julie and Matt ever get back together. Usually on a Friday Night I am always out looking for something to go do. This last year [since the move to Fridays] my Friday Nights don’t start until 9p when the credits roll. Every time I watched an episode I couldn’t wait until the next week. And sure some shows are like that, but not every single episode it has produced.
If this really is the end, it is tragic. God Bless Kevin Reilly for keeping it alive. And I guess I’ll wait for more “Lights” when I can pick up the 2nd season DVD.
February 14th, 2008 at 6:29 am
Entourage, Big Love, and Flight will all be back in Fall 2008. They were all supposed to start filming 2 weeks ago, so are not too too far behind with filming. The writers just need time to get together and go over the scripts. These shows were all supposed to be back on in June 2008, so September 2008 is not too far off the mark.
It’s too bad that they will now go up against the ABC Sunday night lineup though.
I loved having these shows on in the Summertime. They were decadent, just like Summer.
Oh well, at least we will get new episodes this year.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:27 am
This is some bullshit!!! They axed the Sarah Conner Cronicles and Bionic Woman. I vow from now on to never watch another tv show. I am going to do nothing but read books from this day forward. To hell with torpid bastards.

Any word on when It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is coming back? I was surprised to see it left off the list of FX shows. I love the way that they continue to create more and more morally corrupt characters.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia is set for late 2008/2009.

How about Eureka?
February 14th, 2008 at 5:57 pm
From The New York Times:
HBO has slid back the schedules of two returning series that had been considered for summer runs: “Entourage” and “Big Love.” “Entourage” will appear in the fall, and “Big Love” probably later in the year.
February 14th, 2008 at 8:06 pm
“First, it desparately needed it. After the pilot episode which took in about 18 million viewers, it had fallen off to about 8 million viewers for the episode that followed the Super Bowl the next day. That is a HUGE drop.”
There’s one flaw in your argument - the 18 million viewer premier far out-performed FOX’s expectations. It was never meant to do that on a weekly basis - it was commissioned to be paired with 24, which didn’t air this season but only average 10.5 million viewers a week last season. Further, TSCC is consistently posting mid-8 million viewers and a 3.4-ish shares in live viewers and coming second in the 18-49 demo - numbers which increase by about 20 per cent when DVR numbers are factored in - and growing out of Prison Break each week. TSCC isn’t House but nothing else on Fox’s schedule is.
I wouldn’t argue that Fox would like to see another million viewers (and so would I) and I agree that TSCC is expensive to produce (but if you notice the car “chases” look more involved than they are) but how much of that is being passed onto Fox from Warners (who have a vested interest in furthering the brand leading up to T4 in 2009 and have already sold the series internationally) is debatable. I don’t think it’s a slam-dunk but unlike Drive, which UNDERperformed in its premier, scoring only a 2.4 in the demo, I don’t think it’s “highly unlikely” to be renewed.
February 14th, 2008 at 10:48 pm
K8ie,
You make some very valid points. 8 million viewers is a respectable number week to week. However, another point you make about Prison Break being the lead in ties into TSCC’s fate. After Monday, TSCC losses it’s lead in from PB. I believe there are only 3 new episodes of TSCC after that. I haven’t looked into what will be replacing PB a week from Monday but with the cupboard rather bare on established, unaired shows, I would guess that any bump TSCC got from PB will be diminished.(UPDATE, I just looked it up and it looks like it wil have The Moment of Truth as it’s lead in). That might provide it the stable lead in it gets with PB, but then again, reality is a whole different audience/beast so who knows?
Here’s hoping it gets a full order for this season or picked up for next.
Best,
Hooper X
Also, when TSCC was introduced at the upfronts last year, it wasn’t originally scheduled to follow 24. In fact it was scheduled to run Sunday nights after the animation block from 7pm to 9pm. I believe they even mentioned at the time it was going to follow in the footsteps of the X Files….. Yep, I found the schedule from the upfronts here:
http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6443782.html
It was set to run in January on Sundays.
Finally, while it would have been or still could be an important tie-in for the T4 movie, that is so far out and not a Fox property that it likely played/will play little in Fox’s decision to renew TSCC. Even if T4 were a Fox movie and TSCC were a Fox production, I have my doubts that they would keep such an expensive show on the air with “decent” ratings for a year just to get tie in opportunities. And since the Terminator franchise is WB that makes it all the more unlikely. And if you don’t think this show is exceptionally expensive to produce, think again. And more importantly, if you don’t think the cost is passed onto the broadcast network and that it doesn’t play a part in the decision to pick this show up, think again.
All that being said, here’s the thing…. I like the show. I’ve seen all 9 episodes and while it’s not groundbreaking, it’s good and I enjoyed them all. I have nothing against the show, in fact I’d like to see it return. It’s far better than more reality or any number of scripted dramas with no viewer awareness that stand a far smaller chance of catching on. I wrote the article to inform everyone of what I knew about the status of the various shows, not to dump on any of them(well ok, maybe Cavemen and Carpoolers). As my report indicated, with the information I have from my sources(industry sources) and what I have read on other sites like the rest of you, I found it “highly unlikely” it would return after it’s current run of 9 episodes. But as we all know, things can change and often do. That’s why the beginning of my report said everything was subject to change. In TSCC’s case, I have no reason to believe I am wrong, as of today. But tomorrow is another day and another chance. If I wind up eating my words, I won’t be disappointed. I’ll be happy that a decent show will get another chance to catch on and we won’t have to worry about Fox filling another hour on their schedule with House repeats, or much worse, more horrible reality television.
February 14th, 2008 at 11:16 pm
Jc,
Some of the information is readily available all over the net. Some of the information comes from sources I have at various studios. Finally, some information comes from contacts on assorted shows. That’s about as much as I can cite for you without screwing up my relationships or disclosing my identity.
Name the shows you want confirmation on and I’ll see what I can do.

Kevin,
I have no updated information about Eureka. Late last September there was news that it would return for 13 more episodes late summer of 2008. But that was pre-strike. All I can do is guess at the moment, if they were going to return late in the summer of 08 before the strike MAYBE they will be back late 08(add 3 months of the strike to the schedule as an educated guess).
I will do my best to get real information for you in the next few days.

From TV Guide:
“Cast members like Rex Lee are hearing the HBO comedy will head back into production in March. Lee (who plays Hollywood assistant extraordinaire Lloyd) admits “I’d love to get back to work”.
This is in line with the New York Times and other publications that have stated “Entourage” will now be back in Fall 2008 instead of the original pre-strike June 2008.
Some sources have been less commital and stated that the show will return late 2008/early 2009.
Originally, the show was to begin filming around now, so it does not seem too far off the original back to set date.
Considering Doug Ellin and his team has 3-4 pre-strike scripts ready to go, it doesn’t seem too hopeful to think they will make a September 2008 return date.
Lets all hope this is true.
