Above is our first look at Mickey Rourke in character Randy “The Ram” Robinson, an aging professional wrestler who is told he can never wrestle again. Click on the image above to enlarge.
Over the course of two days, Darren Aronofsky (Requiem For a Dream) shot some scenes for his upcoming film The Wrestler in the Hasbrouck Heights training club. The WXW Website reports that Rourke filmed scenes in the ring in front of WXW live crowds, and behind the scenes in the locker room. Afa the Wild Samoan is apparently Rourke’s trainer on the film, and was at ringside for the shooting.

Mickey is SUCH a better fit for that role than Nick Cage. I couldn’t begin to imagine Cage in that role.

Thank God it isn’t Nicolas Cage! Absolutely. He can act feaky. But Mickey Rourke IS a freak. Really looking forward to this.

Aronofsky and Rourke- wrestling movie? This is too cool!

I’m really glad Cage didn’t get the part. I’m sick of seeing him everywhere, being the “same” character.
I’m also very much looking forward to this film.

Much better choice than Nic Cage (nothing against the guy). Rourke really looks like a past his prime former wrestling superstar. I oughta know, I watch wrestling regularly.

I was actually at the filming in Hasbrouck Heights NJ a few weeks ago as an extra in the audience. Had an absolute blast, first time I’ve ever done anything like that. Mickey Rourke did great in the ring, we had a great time busting on his “opponent” Tommy Rotten. Me and a friend talked to the director after the first night’s shoot, who told us we were “all over” the shots from the first night. Hopefully when the film comes out the scenes won’t be cut. I’m the guy in the front row, dressed all in black with an American flag bandana on, you can’t miss me.
