The new Iron Man television spot which premiered during the Super Bowl has everyone talking. It certainly got me pumped to see the film, although, a lot of people seem to be questioning the overtly CG animated sequence towards the end (yes, it did look somewhat like a video game cut scene). But I’m pretty sure this is just unfinished early effects work. If you haven’t already, check out the television spot below. Please comment and tell me what you thought!
Update: You can now watch the new Iron Man advertisement in High Definition on Apple.com.
Jon Favreau’s Iron Man hits theaters on May 2nd 2008.

Wow, what a let down. I’m not saying the movie’ll suck, but c’mon! This is the SUPER BOWL! Is that the best Iron Man trailer they could come up with?!

Everything looked promising, except for the scene where he shoots the tank and then walks away. That was very videogame-looking and painful to look at.

For a 30 second clip, when you know the average American hasn’t been exposed to this film yet; I think that was a pretty promising trailer. Needed a couple more seconds of that shot with “The Dude” would be my only complaint.

I thought it actually looked pretty cool…. promising…. !

I hope they don’t try to make it too cartoony like you said. The last shot was just an action movie cliche. I don’t want that to happen. Just keep it simple and have the shots be a variety. Most of them seemed to have a strange tilt or swoop. Just want it to have an on location feel. It should look like he’s in a suit in front of the camera. Not a movie feeding out of a computer cord.

yea I hope they clean up that last scene with the tank too

I watched the game in a room full of folks who had never heard of Iron Man yet were AMPED to see this flick. Like the man said, I was geared for the masses, not us geeks.
I think that “comic book” movies are headed in the right direction, primarily because they are casting actual actors to play these roles, rather than unknowns with pretty faces (I’m looking at YOU JLA and Star Trek!). Guys like Bale, Downey and Norton can being a bit of gravitas to what could easily be campy.

I can almost definitely say that the last shot was just unfinished effects work/not the final version, cause if someone remembers first trailer had iron man suit looking somewhat plastic, but if you look at current production photos it has a layer of dirt and scratches on it. It somehow looks more metalic. And anyway - ILM is working on effects, so there should be nothing to worry about.
Oh, yea, and tv spot rocked.
February 3rd, 2008 at 11:49 pm
why not just make it all 3D? cuz all those VFX shots were entirely 3d… and yes, they looked like video games cut-aways…

I liked it. It didn’t give too much away, but it did give you enough of the eye candy to make you want to go see it. Perhaps it was a bit too much CGI, but it’s hard to tell what it’ll look like on the big screen. I think it’s gonna be a good one though.
February 4th, 2008 at 12:41 am
whack. downey jr. really?
February 4th, 2008 at 1:12 am
Keep this in mind. Toward the end with the heavy CGI could have very well been a rip from the Video Game of the same name which is currently under development.
Who’s to say they weren’t thrown into a rush and just slapped that on there? I find it a possibility

I actually think Downey Jr. is a good cast for Tony Stark. Very believable. Iron Man (tony Stark) is a little bit full of himself at times and sometimes can come off a little arrogant. Yet at times you really do believe he genuinely cares about you underneath the sarcasm and arrogance. Robert Downey Jr. is very capable of pulling off this attitude. Great casting.

How does the shooting of the tank look video game like? It looks real.
Badass trailer.

check out the statue of liberty’s head in the CLOVERFIELD teaser. then check the trailer. then the final movie. post production literally continues right up to the last minute…no need to worry.
kick ass trailer

Can anyone tell me what’s the spot song?
February 4th, 2008 at 10:10 am
I personally can’t wait for the Iron Man movie. Did anyone notice the Tesla Roadster in the background when he was testing the Boots? Such an awesome car to premote..
February 4th, 2008 at 10:13 am
I enjoyed it, even if it was just eye candy for the masses.
February 4th, 2008 at 10:26 am
As much as I like Robert Downey Jr. and I think he makes a good Tony Stark, I have a hard time thinking of him as the guy in the Iron Man suit. I think the problem is that he’s a little too chunky and not tall enough for the suit in this snippet and the trailer.

Superanguiman
The song is Cochise from Audioslave. Great song.

Ehhh…again with the super hero Marvel movies? These movies look semi decent when you watch the previews, and then invariably you see the film and it sucks. Everyone wants to follow up the success of Spider Man and capitalize on it, but it turns out just awful, they get B-rated actors or put good actors in awful roles with HORRIBLE scripts (Jessica Alba in Fantastic 4, anyone?) I’m not going to see this movie because…well, let’s face it, the plot is dumb and I realize they don’t want to change it up because it is an old comic and they want to retain their original fans, but the plots are just SO tired and…well it just looks bad, alright? special effects can carry a movie only so far.

Thank you Tshirt

The more I see of this film the more
excited I am to see it.
February 4th, 2008 at 2:09 pm
Yeah, this one will be good.
February 4th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
I think the spot was great and the last shot was really amazing. I know as well as most that it is still “in the works” but come on, look at it again if you need to and without your foggy super bowl beer goggles on. It’s a good spot and promises to be a great movie with pretty killer fx. Great fx can carry a movie really far when it keeps you on the edge of your seat waiting for the next thing to blow up.
February 4th, 2008 at 8:57 pm
I wonder if the public will get overwhelmed with the incessant rate in which Hollywood seems to be making Marvel Comic films.
February 5th, 2008 at 1:42 am
only if they keep making bad ones.
Jessica Alba as Susan Storm? someone gave it up on a couch for that choice.
February 5th, 2008 at 11:50 am
To Isaiah; just like that’s your opinion and taste and u dislike these movies, there are others including me who like them and enjoyed every moment of those movies. I wouldn’t generalize your opinion and demand that they stop making movies like these. Now if everyone had the same taste and liked the same exact thing then the world would be a dull place, don’t you think?
February 5th, 2008 at 12:30 pm
oh heck, I just love comic based movies
February 5th, 2008 at 10:08 pm
It looks good, but am I the only one who thinks they should have used the Mandarin instead of Stane?
February 6th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
No one is ever happy with the way movies are made. If all of you negative nancy-boys would just take a look at movies from the past and compare them to movies of the present you would realize that watching… for example… a monster ooze at the mouth back in the 80’s called for the special effects of a can of corn and some playdough… while watching a monster in today’s time you would actually see granuals of spit and bits of flesh mixed in with the CG slobber. I personally think movie effects have come a long way and seriously… when has a movie with superheroes ever actually looked realistic?? Its human nature to see it as fake because it is fake… but, if your going to complain about it being too fake and not real enough then all you nay-sayers need to wake up from your wonderful dream and watch the movie for what it was made for… entertainment
