Last week we posted photos of Castro Street in San Francisco, which has been retrofitted for Gus Van Sant’s Milk. Yesterday we gave you the first look at Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, the first openly gay man elected to any substantial political office in the history of the planet. Today we bring you the first look at Emile Hirsch as gay activist Cleve Jones. Yes, that is Sean Penn in character as Harvey Milk on the left in the photo below. Is it just me or does the curly hair (wig?) looks too over the top.

That’s Sean Penn on the right with curly hair? It looks more like Emile Hirsch to me. Too
‘wiry’ to be Penn, no?

Anybody seen “Extras”? Reminds me of the character Ricky Gervais plays in the show-within-the-show.
“Are you havin’ a laugh?”

I’m working as an extra in the film. Up close and in person, Sean Penn actually looks very authentic. You have to look back at old photos of Milk in his hippy days to see exactly how accurate his look is. I have not yet worked on the same set with Hirsch, so cannot vouch for how closely he resembles Jones in person, but I can say that the people behind all this are sticklers for authenticity.

in the first picture is the guy with the hardcore sideburns next to Emile James Franco? I know he’s supposed to be in the film and I haven’t yet seen a photo of him on set….???

I was a volunteer extra last night on Monday, the 4th and really enjoyed it. I have to say I had no idea that the guy who was runnng up to the stage with the megaphone was the same person who starred in Into The Wild. I didn’t know that until a little while ago when I was doing research on the making of the film in this city…geez…I could’ve reached out and touched him…lol! Good job Emile!
