The Hammer

I always wondered why Adam Carolla never took off as a movie star. His comic timing and charisma has carried him through the popular long running radio show Loveline, and the popular television show The Man Show. Last year Corolla went out and filmed an independent comedy called The Hammer, which premiered at last year’s Tribeca Film Festival to a nice response (the film is currently getting a 8.4 on imdb). Check out the trailer after the jump.

Synopsis:
Jerry Ferro’s (Adam Carolla) 40th birthday has brought his life into sharp relief and it’s not a pretty picture. A once-promising amateur boxer — who quit so he wouldn’t risk his perfect record of underachievement — Jerry has been knocking around from one construction job to another and spinning his wheels in an unsatisfying relationship, all the while with an eye toward eventually getting his shit together. His last connection to the fight game is the evening boxing class he teaches to middle-aged, middle class, middle management types at a gym in Pasadena, where he also works as a handyman. When venerable boxing coach Eddie Bell (Tom Quinn) asks Jerry if he’d like to spar a couple of rounds with Malice Blake (Harold House Moore), an up-and-coming pro, Jerry reluctantly steps into the ring. Despite the ass-kicking Jerry otherwise receives, a one-punch knockdown of Blake convinces Jerry that it¹s time to make his return to competitive boxing. Thus ends a 20-year layoff and begins a hilarious fish-out-water quest for Olympic gold.

The film stars Adam Carolla (JAY AND SILENT BOB STRIKE BACK, TV’s FAMILY GUY), Oswaldo Castillo (THE ADAM CAROLLA PROJECT), Jonathan Hernandez (THE BUCKET LIST, TV’s PRISON BREAK), Harold House Moore (TV’s CSI MIAMI), and Heather Juergensen (THE SUZY PROPHECY). THE HAMMER was written by Carolla and directed by Charles Herman-Wurmfeld (LEGALLY BLONDE 2: RED, WHITE & BLUE, TV’s SO NOTORIOUS).

I’m sorry, did I just see the words “Adam Corrolla” and “charisma” in the same sentence? I think I’ll manage in life without ever having seen this. Please tell me Adam’s best buddy Danny Bonaduche makes a cameo!!! One talentless hack simply would not be enough.

This looks very funny. Seems like Adam got the chance to work in his own brand of humor, which always works better for him than a script.

His home remodeling show on Bravo or TLC (cant remember which) made me a lifetime fan of this guy

Wow, save for the cliche soundtrack, I’m actually interested in this. I just hope Adam doesn’t delve into one of his trademark whines like he does on his radio show.

Wait, what? Adam was in Jay & Silent Bob?? I’ve seen it twice, I don’t remember him in it!?

Enrique, Adam was cut out of Jay and Silent Bob. I don’t know why he’s still credited as being in it. He sometimes likes to tell the story of watching Kevin Smith’s personal apology to him on the DVD while stoned and freaking out.

This look refreshingly funny. I think Adam pulls it off very well. And I must say Nicaragua!!! I love Nicaragua, I lived there for a while great place.

Just saw it this weekend with my wife - I’m a listener and she’s not - we both really liked it. Not because it is an oscar winner or even an Anchorman but it’s funny throughout the movie, will not blow your mind but will not utterly dissapoint like basically every other completely overhyped big name romantic or sports comedy. Check out other blogs that support the thinking.
