Like two puppies in love, Harvey Weinstein and Nikki Finke had their requisite Sunday chat today, with Weinstein declaring that he’s quite pumped up about Rambo’s combined domestic and international box office potential, while Finke’s sentiments are, adorably, the exact opposite. Serving as executive producer on the fourth Rambo film, which opened in second place this weekend, grossing $18.2 million, Weinstein also said that he’s hungry for a sequel, and this time he wants Rambo to come back to America.
“I like the idea of an older guy kicking ass. Maybe it’s because I’m older, too,” added Weinstein.
Sylvester Stallone has stated many times that, while Rocky Balboa’s days on film are up, he’d love to bring John Rambo back. Recently, we reported that Stallone emphasized adding “another element of the surreal [to a Rambo V] that would actually take the audience into a slightly different genre.”
Weinstein said he expects Rambo to do $50 million domestically, with $100-150 million on top of that internationally, where Stallone is a bigger draw. Both the speculated sci-fi or superhero slant and a return to the states sound like good moves, creative and business-wise, for the franchise and the Rambo character to me. You?

Sci fi rambo?
…right.
January 27th, 2008 at 8:20 pm
Sci-Fi would be beyond retarted.
I would love to see John Rambo stateside and going in a different direction but Sci-Fi, makes no sense at all.

I’d watch the next Rambo even if he becomes a transsexual hezbollah-loving cyborg ninja in the spaceship that brought us the scientologists…

No…not a grandpa Rambo movie…I just don’t want him to hurt himself while doing it.

Rambo V is welcome as long as it is not a Sci-Fi or superhero movie. Either one would be extremely retarded.
January 27th, 2008 at 9:37 pm
how about: get carter 2 , judge dredd 2 , over the top 2 and the now classic… cliffhanger 2 !!!!

Don’t ruin Rambo with something corny like sci-fi or making him wear a cape. How would you do sci-fi with Rambo? Put him up against ET in a duel sequel? (Rambo V and ET 2 combined). For a superhero, I guess he could just find an old Judge Dredd costume and make a duel sequel there too.
Seriously, making Rambo into a sci-fi or superhero movie ranks no less ridiculous as those concoctions. I think a good Rambo V might come from an inner city fight against terrorists, or maybe one where Rambo goes and helps end the conflict in Kenya.
Maybe one where he finds Bin Laden?

@Jim
I don’t think something like a Rambo vs Predator movie would be ridiculous. Rambo’s world is not entirely different from Arnold’s character in the first Predator film. If there hasn’t been one, I could easily imagine a comic book series reimagining Rambo in that manner. Also, Stallone could be hinting at a more SIN CITY-style take on the character - heavily stylized with heavy special effects and less loyalty to things like, oh, gravity.
Stallone said that Rambo V would enter another genre, so I’m guessing either a sci-fi/action mix or comic book-esque/action. Feel free to say that this action-related genre could be comedy, but Stallone already said it wasn’t a musical.

I have heard nothing but good things about this movie. I am making it a priorty to see this film myslef this week…!

Grindhouse was better.
January 28th, 2008 at 8:24 am
I bet the other genre he’s talking about is a Western. Modern-day, of course, but still a Western.
January 28th, 2008 at 9:18 am
Creatively? Ridiculous.
January 28th, 2008 at 12:10 pm
Maybe Rambo is about to fight Schwarzenegger as the President of the US… LOL
Or he is engadged with Terminator 4… LOL
January 28th, 2008 at 2:15 pm
A sci-fi Rambo? What if they added a twist that he was actually exposed to experimental chemicals in Vietnam, kind of like Jacob’s Ladder, that gave him heightened senses or something. That’s the only thing I could think of that wouldn’t completely ruin the character. What if the “slightly different genre” he’s talking about is a Western? the Rambo theme always sounded like a western anyway. Put the guy on a horse and have him fight mexican gangs. Hell yes.

rambo and robocop vs terminator and judge dread ftw
January 29th, 2008 at 3:02 am
I really don’t think Sly would let it get so far…Not fighting aliens or getting poisoned so that he gets superpowers…It would probably be a mix with the old Rambo films and maybe with some more love, or that you can see he him save people form a sinking ship!!
No matter what, I can’t wait till Rambo V…..It wouldn’t be so bad…
January 29th, 2008 at 2:52 pm
the only reason to bring Rambo back
{again} is if he were to get married
January 29th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
I wrote a satirical article about the news, can’t wait for the next Rambo, Stallone is such a good performer.
January 31st, 2008 at 6:48 pm
damn ive read some stupid stuff on this page. sci-fi no no no. after seeing the movie and acknowledging the meaning of the movie it would be sacriledge to create anything that is not a pure blood rambo movie. in the next movie if ther ever were to be one rambo should die and in the most tragic way possible. frankly it should have happened in IV imo. get married? are you on crack?

Iam a Die Hard Fan of Rambo Movies, But The Fourth Installment of this Movie has Dissapointed me…..because it doesnt potray Rambo as a War Machine like hes famous for. There are one or two scenes where hes up in arms. Not like in Previous Installements of the Movie in which Rambo is Really Kicking some Butts, Using every equpiment to destroy his Enemies.

In the ending sequence of Rambo IV we see him coming back to the USA to I believe somewhere in Arizona. How’s about Rambo taking on the last of mutants from the movie “The Hills have Eyes” which I believe takes place in Nevada and Arizona are pretty close together not much travel time. What the heck if they are thinking Sci-Fi for the next Rambo movie ya might as well throw in the Horror angle as well?
