Smart People is probably the first adopted pedophile incest comedy, although I wouldn’t really call it that (that’s really just the subplot). Here is the plot synopsis from my early review: Dennis Quaid plays Lawrence Wetherhold, a miserable and pompous college professor who suffers a head trauma while trying to jump the fence at a car impound lot. Unable to drive himself around, his screw-up adopted-brother Chuck (played by the incomparable Thomas Haden Church) moves in and becomes his personal chauffeur (if he can ever remember to pick his brother up). Chuck tries to expose Lawrence’s conservative daughter Vanessa (Ellen Page) to beer and drugs, and in the process, a complicated relationship develops. Meanwhile Lawrence falls for his Doctor Janet, played by the ever-so annoying Sarah Jessica Parker, and in the process, must find a way to cure himself of his unhealthy obsession with his deceased wife.

WOW.. A sequel to JUNO already!??!?!
This must be a record!
The sad part is…It kinda makes Ellen Page look like a one trick pony. Am I gonna have to re watch Hard Candy to disprove this?
oops.
:P

Rewatch Hard Candy! Ellen Page really is pretty special. Here’s hoping that now that she’s in a great position, she makes some good decisions for roles and movies so she isn’t constantly playing the same character, like Michael Cera.
Minus Sarah Jessica Parker, I think this movie looks fairly promising. Church is very good playing this type of guy. Whoo knows if it will actual work or if it will seem cloying, etc., but I have high hopes for it. I predict it will be maybe a bit better than Juno, but not quite on the Little Miss Sunshine level. The cast (minus SJP) is great, though the writing in the trailer wasn’t as immediately impressive as LMS.

Hard Candy is one crazy movie. But Ellen Page is great.

She’s seems a bit more toned down in this movie. I wouldn’t say her performance is gonna be just like the one in Juno. But if you need some more convincing, American Crime and Tracey Fragments…whenever those actually get released. She definitely not a one trick pony.

Now that Juno has come out and has been successful, she’ll be offered a lot of similar roles (everyone wants to make last year’s big hit). I don’t think anyone’s questioning her talent or range- all you have to do is watch both Hard Candy and Juno to know what she can do. I wouldn’t include those other movies because they were pitched and made before Juno was released. It’s what happens next that will be interesting to see. I think that making good decisions has just as much to do with the success of a young career as talent does. Just look at Heath Ledger and Johnny Depp versus Cuba Gooding Jr.

Minus SJP I think this could be a good film
to watch. I really like all the other actors
in the cast and the story seems interesting.

THC is the man! He seriously needs to do more movies.

Looks quality! I doubt that Page’s performance will be at all similar, this seems a lot less tongue-in-cheek and a little more pretentious, without the sweet smart-alecky precociousness that Juno had. I hope she doesn’t fall into a pattern, she’s too skilled to see her playing teenager after teenager.

mmmm marry me Miss Page!?

Ellen Page’s character seems very different from Juno and other roles she’s played. Here she is a kid wanting to make it in main stream USA which I don’t recall in Ellen’s other roles. And judging by the trailer, the script seems well written and wry, a satire of academic values. Looking forward to the release date- Keep them coming Ellen.

I’m with R&J. I am starting to think it is Ellen Page that I don’t like. I can hardly stand the sound of her voice and it doesn’t seem to matter what she is saying. I didn’t mind Hard Candy. I just recently kicked a girl out of my apartment during a gathering of folks, and now I am starting to think it might have something do with the fact that she reminds me of her. She was abrasive, but I think there was more to it than that. I think its the monotone.

I think she can play the role better than anybody else. She is young, active and very smart.
I also like the plot of the movie. It is great to give some sense to a tired professor’s life and existence.
I will watch this movie with great pleasure!
