Toy Story 1 & 2 Returning to Theaters in 3D

It was announced today that the first two films in Pixar’s sole and signature franchise, Toy Story and Toy Story 2, are headed back to movie screens October 2nd, 2009 and February 12th, 2010, respectively, with a complete digital 3D makeover, called Disney Digital 3D to be exact. The films will be an audience primer for Disney-Pixar’s digital 3D Toy Story 3, which hits screens on June 18th, 2010. John Lasseter, director of the first two Toy films and a Pixar poobah, is supervising the 3D process on both, while director Lee Unkrick continues his work on the second sequel.

In 1995, Toy Story was probably the most eye-popping thing I’d ever seen at that young age, in a theater or otherwise. Well, it ranked with my first concert, Beck, but I remember looking at the screen and my brain couldn’t comprehend the smoothness of the characters on screen. It was like the future in Back to the Future 2 had finally arrived. That feeling came surprisingly close again last year watching Beowulf at midnight at IMAX, but not totally. And I guess kids will feel the same way (self-fitting sneaks and attacking 3D movie ads still on the way…) with Toy Story 3 in 3D.

But while the new movie is a whole ‘nother animal, I’m not sure if I’d like to see the original film again in theaters in 3D. It might be like putting two types of syrup on your pancakes. Maybe that’s the goofy, tie-dyed cousin of death, nostalgia, talking. I’m sure it will look amazing, and Pixar revolutionized filmmaking, so they deserve the long theatrical celebration and audience refresher. What do you think?

Dammit! Too old to see it yet too young to go with a kid.

    Being a teen sucks.
  • Kenny
    Never too old for DISNEY!!
  • Jerry Butler
Disney 3D is really impressive. Caught Meet the Robinson's at the El Capitan and the experience and execution is downright flawless.
  • Chad
19 years old here, and damn, I'll be sure to check both of these films out again when they're re-released.
  • will
to the guy who said he was too old to see it but too young to go with a kid...
there's no such thing as too old!!! geez im gonna see 1, 2, and 3 first day they come out because they were that amazing. i dont care if some kid comes up to me and says, "you're too big for this movie" i'll probably just say "well you're too young for this movie since you probably weren't born when it first came out whereas i was, plus the fact that it's a free country, so suck it". i'll be 16 when these movies come out and i'll be proud to sit in the front row (even though i'll probably sit in the back since it'll be hard to see from up front).

Didn't these films, classics, have inside jokes that adults onderstand? Your never too old to watch a PIXAR flick! Their kudos to Mayazaki-san is just great! I own some of his films too. Last film of Mayazaki was 'Howls Moving Castle'. S.G. and the works of Mayazaki are a testement of his genious as a director! Excuse my typos, but S.G. and Pixar are the reason Disney makes $money!
Too add, I still watch Anime. I'm in my 30s still. Your never too old for cartoons!
  • Jeff
I'm 25.. and I'll be in line for tickets the first day.
You are NEVER too young for Toy Story.
Kids love it cuz its their dream come true (Toys that come to live? Tell me we all didnt imagine that as kids).
Everyone else loves it because it brings us back to our childhood and can easily relate.

To this day, my favorite scene from ANY movie is from Toy Story when the Shark pops out of the Toy Box with Woody's hat and says:
    "LOOK! I'm Woody!
    Howdy howdy howdy!"

I'm sorry, but while I love how technology goes forward in leaps and bounds, Toy Story is one of those experiences in my life that I like to look back on and think "wow, that's where it all began." It belongs to the ages. It should stand as a testament to great storytelling and what has gone before. To redo it is to reach into our memories and give them a polish so that we forget what it was like way back then.

I think this is a bad idea.
  • It will be totally new viewing experience! VideoDoc had somewhere read that Pixar after probably 2009 or 2010 is going to produce mostly in new stereoscopic 3D all their coming feature animations. There were rumors of such graphics card developing corporations as Nvidia to develop new stereoscopic view technologies.
Maaaaaann, it will be cool to see those animations with this stuff :o

just cuz your a teen does not mean you cant go! im 15 and im pumped ill be 16 when 2 and 3 come out and ill still see it!
  • Disney info on Toy story 3 in 3-D movie trailers are like hard trying to find those toy story t rex on ebay. It is even hard to find woody from the original toy story. So if you can find a toy story 3 3d movie trailer now then good luck because its rare. "new cartoon movies" what is 3-D use for in a movie film is probably the best 3d cartoon of our time i know that user reviews of the toy story 3 3d movie trailer was good. It seems like everybody really likes the movie so, when it comes out the toy story sells on sites like amazon.com will be exceptionally high.
