Does anyone else see a heavy influence from great Time Life photographer W. Eugene Smith in these shots?

Bottom-line: this could be good, it could be bad. It's impossible to tell from a teaser. That said, though, I liked it. I thought it evoked enough to let you know something was coming and, basically, you'll just have to wait and see. I think it also conveyed that this was a Star Trek movie but given that no title was used and given that the intro was quite different from what even non-Star Trek fans would have expected, it perhaps did a good job of letting people know: "Yeah, it's Star Trek. But this is different."

Regarding the comment "I love the idea of trying to ground Trek in U.S. space travel history." Yeah, I agree, but the series "Enterprise" did that quite a bit, particularly in its opening montage/sequence. So this certainly isn't new. And the TNG film "First Contact" at the very least took us back to the first warp flight, which in turn made some references to past efforts to reach limits and reach the stars.

Regarding this: "For a non Trekkie, the series and movies are instantly jarring. Too geeky, too sci-fi." I don't think that's the case, any more than Harry Potter is "too geeky" or Lord of the Rings is "too fantasy." There may be something to that but I think a more realistic assessment is that the problem is that many of the Trek movies have given the impression that you had to understand much of the history of the series (as a whole) to really enjoy the films. This especially happened with the TNG films, where even the "Dominion" was mentioned in one of the movies, tying it into the events of DS9 at the time. Even "Wrath of Khan" required at least some understanding of "Space Seed" to figure out who the heck Khan was and why he mattered. However, Star Trek IV ("Voyage Home") and VI ("Undiscovered Country") were greatly enjoyed by many people who were considered 'non-Trekkies' but who did enjoy good science-fiction stories.

Could it bring in a new audience? Maybe. Just having a different setting for the movie won't do it, though. There's going to have to be an interesting balance between severing some ties with the past (series and movies) but keeping enough in that the movie is still recognizably in the Star Trek universe, as it were.

I'm cautiously optimistic and, as Spock might say, "I find these developments ... fascinating."

well, abrams actually made star trek feel epic which is no mean feat. not as exciting as it could be coming from the guy who gave us the cloverfield and m-i-iii trailers, but then it's just a teaser.
