Have your dramamine handy. If you are at all prone to motion sickness you are going to need it. Is there anything worse than making an entire movie with a cheap handheld camera? Yes, making it with a cheap handheld camera with no motion stabilizer.

The first part of the movie really really boring. The going away party drags on and on and on. Then an unstoppable monster destroys the city - at night, so it's even harder to see the giggly home video.

I'm trying to think of something positive to say...hmmmm. The box the video came in was okay.

The film was dissappointing. I felt that it could have been developed a bit better.
The videocam idea was a bit annoying, and at times was detrimental to the overall film.
As for the characters ? - who really cares, the star of the show was the monster, the effects were pretty good, but the ending could have went on - or maybe thats what it was meant to do if theres gonna be a sequel ?

Okay, about the time of the movie not being accurate, did you realize the movie was only 84 minutes long? Many handycam batteries last that long! Also, on G4TV, I saw a Cloverfield commercial and it showed the monster! Also, I can't find a picture of Clover or the Coney Island scene video with decent resolution. Any links anyone?

To Jerry:

Thank you for a cogent, clear and cohesive (the alliteration there was purely coincidental) post about your feelings on the movie. I mean, you haven't SEEN the thing and you posted one of the best arguments against it that I've seen. I personally loved Cloverfield, but I'm just glad to see someone post something that was level-headed instead of angry and destructive. Kudos.

"The ones I feel sorry for, though, are the main characters in the movie because they all apparently die with what must have been burning curiosity about the unfolding events of that fateful evening."

Trust me, their only burning desire was to get the hell out of there alive. There wasn't time to sit around and ponder the creature's origins. As far as Lost goes, you can't compare this to that in any way. The characters in Lost have been on the damn island long enough that they should be demanding answers a little more than they are. That and in Lost, you, the viewer, have the position of omniscience whereas in this you only see it through the camera lens. Maybe you wanted some cheesy song and dance at the end from some guy in a white labcoat explaining in detail they could never possibly figure out where the damn thing came from. If you like those kinds of movies, good for you, this one isn't for you, so leave it to the people who it is for. It personally would've ruined it for me if they came out and cheesed it out like that. So in short, STFU.

Haven't seen the movie, but from what I have been reading in this blog, and from what I know of the way Mr JJ has structured Lost, shaky camcorder not-with-standing, its easy to believe that the movie was dissatisfying to many because of all the unanswered questions. Just look at Lost recently. JJA hasn't answered most questions from even the earliest season, and by now there are so many different groups of new people on the island, its population must be approaching that of Sidney, AU, posing whole new sets of questions; after awhile, it hard to keep track, and who cares.

I mean, anyone watching a movie such a Cloverfield would naturally wonder where the monster came from, and/or why is it here, and other such things. To have none, or at least so many of these naturally occurring curiosities left unanswered in a story at the end is bound to be disappointing. I mean, what do we have here, a cinematic Lost? Will iteration number two raise even more question then it ever attempts to answer? Of-course, with a weekly series it is understandable that the writer would raise question which need to be answered from week to week, on a continual basis. I mean, it is a continuing story, yes? But don't pile them on so thick each week, leave them unanswered, or allow them to just trail off into nothingness, then pile new ones on ever so thick again. This really becomes a drag, and after a while you begin to wonder if even the story teller remembers all the questions he has posed. Alas, at the rate Lost is going, I am afraid I won't live long enough to ever make any real sense out of it.

Ultimately, the people who said they were satisfied with Cloverfield seem to be saying they liked its special effects, camera work, pacing and 'mystery.' Yet for as much as they claim that 'mystery' was a factor in the movie's appeal, they don't seem to be particularly curious for answers. The truly curious, ones who don't like to make up answers for themselves, who prefer to think that at least some truths are absolute, not ones lacking imagination, as some on this blog have suggested, seem to be the ones most disappointed. The ones I feel sorry for, though, are the main characters in the movie because they all apparently die with what must have been burning curiosity about the unfolding events of that fateful evening. They will never get to see iteration number two either....not that seeing it would help to satisfy their curiosity; it'll probably just obfuscate things even more so if Lost is any indication. Oh, wait, but they're only fictitious characters anyway. Lucky them! Silly me!

I Just hope that if there is an iteration number two to this movie, Mr. JJA doesn't treat it like Lost unless he plans to make a television series out of it. I plan to see the first one. And curiosity may force me to spring for a second, but that's it: I am not going to spring for the cost of a third installment. Even if he does do a series of it, I hope its not quite as convoluted as Lost: I don't plan to sit there for four or more years just to have forgotten most of what I wondered about the first three years, only to have a new monster introduced that I am beginning not to care very much about after all. I'll watch Jericho instead. At least there they answer questions at a reasonable rate per-episode, and pose new ones at a rate my feeble brain can handle.

people said that research can be done, and so on and so forth...

why would you have to do research before seeing a movie???? be serious please. dont be stupid.

secondly...even if you did go to any of these slusho or tagaruto or whatever sites....they wont give you any relevant info there because then you wouldn't have to see the movie.

the guy that made the ferrari reference hit the nail right on the head!

I FEEL LIKE I JUST BOUGHT A FERRARI WITH A BAD ENGINE

Learn how to spell you idiot. We do not take comments with that type of spelling to heart. Crack a book rather than smoki.... Lets see if he has enough brain cells left to figure the rest of it out.

just seen the film tonight in derry, ireland. thought it was a great film, not the best, but better than most. great effects and plenty of jumpy moments. the only critisicm I have is the very short duration, the fact that the main characters were supposed to be regular joes were way too polished and unlikeable (except for the black girl who played a great role) and the fact that they just kept surviving a lot longer than they shud have - how the fuck did they survive that helicoptor ride?

I think there are a lo of hidden gems in the film, you just have to look for them.

also I think there is room for a follow up movie, though not filmed in handicam mode, I think that wud be cool...

I have to say I was left dissapointed walking out of the cinema, however this does not in my opinion detract from what JJ is trying to pull off here.

Cloverfield certainly is a step apart from any film we've seen before and on a far larger scale to blair witch so I dont see how comparisons can be made, especially with the cgi basically dripping from the screen.

However, like lost, you are left like a confused schoolboy trying to understand pythagoras for the first time - lots of unanswered questions. What is the monster, why is it there, did it win, what happened to rob and beth and of course lily in the other heli.

Not alot of aliens have smaller aliens falling off it, was amazing to see on the cbs news though! I thik the monster did have a genuine hatred for mankind, because the statue iof liberty was untouched apart from decapitation and it wasnt just mindly destryoning things because it was a misunderstood monster - King Kong - Thats why the chick that exploded was so screwed up, she shakily sez after they find her "it was eating people" And it singled out Hud and ate him before deciding he wasnt to his taste and spat him out.

Yes I was expecting a better ending and yes Id love a cloverfield 2 and even more so id love 2 c a big budget cloverfield as mentioned earlier from the usal glitzy hollywood style with our "extras" rob, lily, hud etc. making cameos and appearing in the background! Cant help thinking though that we will all be left dissapointed and JJ will be left clutching wads of cash and cackling evily on his next plot to confuse and frsutrate humanity.

All in all a good film, good idea, ok characters(i mean i didnt care about them, lets all remember usually without celebs any1 can get eaten) APART from in Deep Blue Sea big Samuel Ls munching!

8/10

So wish Id walked out awestruck with a dumb look on my face, popcorn stuck 2 my chin mouthing best film i've ever seen! But I wasn't and neither was I saying the same after most of 2007/2008's offerings!

Rambo poor, Die Hard 4, average/good, transformers, average, Rocky 4, good, Assasination of Jesse James, blooyd awful, sweeny todd, bloody awful,

I actualyl enjoyed HITMAN!

AND FINALLY! Does anyone have an opinion on why Brodie aka Jason Lee has majorly sold out and turned in2 an ass - I mean alvin andd the chipmunks and now underdog! Has the CSA been on2 him and he just needs the cash????

I did not like how the movie was portraid in the trailers. This movie was a bad ripp off of the blair witch. You can't redo the way the blair witch was done and expect people to take it seriously or even pretend to.
Brain dead idea of a movie,
Actors were annoying,
Could not get into the movie because you could not see half the time,
Don't try to make a big monster blockbuster if you can't afford to,
This could have been a good movie if they did not do the handi cam thing.

The only people that enjoy this movie are the complete nerds who play dungeons and dragons and starcraft and have absolutley no social skills. For everyone else they were disapointed.

Cloverfield sucked. stop with the cheap handi cam filming there is no wondering if its real so why do it in that way. the actors sucked the camera work was brutal, the story line sucked and the ending was corny the whole premise of the movie was corny. I never felt involved in the movie at any one pont. everyone in the theater felt ripped off. All in all cheap movie that took no brains to make it and only 1 hour long. For the people who liked it, it shows it does'nt take much to excite your minds.

Brutal movie, would never pay to see that garbage again.
