“Look! What is that?!….Why, it’s the Hollywood System!”

Haven’t seen the first Cloverfield yet? Well, get to it kiddo, because Cloverfield 2 has already been discussed, according to the probable smash hit’s director Matt Reeves.

“Only time will tell. While we were on set making the film we talked about the possibilities and directions of how a sequel can go,” Reeves told Bloody Disgusting. “The fun of this movie was that it might not have been the only movie being made that night, there might be another movie! In today’s day and age of people filming their lives on their iphones and handy cams, uploading it to youtube…That was kind of exciting thinking about that.”

For those who waited out Friday to sponge on the wildly polarized reception from geeks and plain clothed civilians alike to J.J. Abrams’s monster bonanza, be sure to stick around until after the end credits because many people aren’t. Personally, I hope another Cloverfield doesn’t happen, but that opinion’s the equivalent of a scraped and jellied record these days. If it does move forward, I’ll already go ahead and give Reeves and Abrams the benefit of the doubt that it wouldn’t be e a retread, based solely on the quality of their first movie. And I don’t think it would go in the horizontal direction Reeves describes above.

Without spoiling anything, there seems to be a lot of curiosity left out there, and if the filmmakers can build a franchise that utilizes the original film’s innovative presentation and wild ideas while flipping expectations on their head, then I’ll support it. That’s a tall order for speculation fresh out the womb, I know. Maybe Abrams should just churn out a the sequel that features a sketchy 60-year-old white haired scientist in front of a slide projector who explains to the audience just what a monster is. “Ya see kids, a monster is part fish and part horse, but it’s not a sea horse!” That might satiate some of the moviegoers demanding their money back.

300 was way better this film “just misses” it’s real close to being a really good flick but something is missing, please tell me what you think-

  2. Gravatar

    That’s funny…Already talking sequels.

  3. Gravatar

I’m iffy on the idea of a sequel. I liked this, but I don’t know if a sequel could be as good.

Depending on how the box-office receipts look (probably really good), Paramount will definitely want a sequel made (as soon as it is possible with the writer’s strike).

  4. Gravatar

I think it could be cool. I’d like to see something like a retrospective documentary of the event though, with bits of videos and news footage, interviews with survivors etc. Instead of just another singular viewpoint.

I cant believe people felt rip off just because what you mention above didn’t happen.. I mean c’mon! what a lack of imagination, it’s like they go just to find out what that thing is and not to enjoy the ride.. and a very good one. This is madness!

Picture a clip of a sketchy 60-year-old white haired scientist explaning every detail of what happened, at the end of Space Odissey (not comparing, just saying)

    Absolutely genius. No sarcasm.

I have not seen the film so I will not comment on it but I do know the director by his previous works and I just can’t believe this film is as bad as I have heard some people say it is. I look back to Alias and Lost and I ask myself…what if JJ did a suspenseful horror flick and he brought some of his fresh ideas to the table when he did it. it sounds like he has done exactly that. I hear a lot of people wining about plot but think about life in general…does it have a plot? When you wake up on a Saturday morning after working all week do you have a plot to guide your day…I don’t. I remember when I was a kid and the weather was real crappy and all of a sudden the tornado siren went off. We all ran out of the house and into the storm cellar. I do not remember stopping to smell the roses, scanning 360 degrees in search of truth, I did not grab anything valuable or personal…I just did what my parents told me to do and I moved out with a purpose. The next 2 hours were full of all kinds of emotions…fear, boredom, laughter, anticipation, etc. From what I have read it seems that JJ got this type of realism into a movie that has really great special effects to boot! Why in the hell would people complain about that. When I got out of the cellar things were different but there was no grand explanation…nobody went out into the night and searched for answers…we just accepted it and talked about how nice it was that nobody got hurt and that our house was still standing. The “monster” was dead…the pictures we saw were on the news and the destruction was there. We accepted that something way bigger than us just demolished things that were important to people…things that would take a long time to replace. I think the fear of something sinister lurking in the depths of the ocean or in the vastness of space really peaks everyones interest when a movie like this comes out. Why not abandon the anticipation “cliches” and just prepare yourself for the unexpected. The advertising made no promises of big-budget bonanza film-making. I am actually turned on to the film by the bad reviews. There are a lot of “movie-shallow” winers and complainers out there who would not know a good movie if they had a chair at Sundance. I say HURRAY to JJ for breaking the mold with this film and I hope they DO NOT do a sequel so the whole planet can speculate on what really happened. Look at what happened when they made Blair Witch sequels….ZOMG! I hope it is still playing in May when I am back home (I am deployed to Iraq). On a lighter note…I would gladly watch an absolutely horrible film in a movie theater right now! I would have a great big bucket of popcorn and a supremo sized coke. I would sit behind the tallest, widest man in the room and right next to the loudest crying baby to ever grace a movie theater. Reason #2 to love this movie…you are all free and you get to complain about it as much as you want to without fear of reprisal…GO FREEDOM!

I think Cloverfield is a good stand alone flick. The way they should approach explaining the monster should be continuing the ARG, so it pays off for those people that played it. Or include some sort of SE DVD that has a disc that has documents on the monster, different sitings, “documentaries,” etc etc etc.

  9. Gravatar

“CLOVERFIELD: THE AFTERMATH”, LOL…I WOULD GO SEE A SEQUAL, IF IT IS DOCUMENTARY STYLE…OR IF IT STARTS OUT AS A BRIEFING AS TO WAT THEY “KNOW”, AND THEN WHAT ELSE THEY WILL TRY TO ATTEMPT TO STOP IT….BECUZ IF THE MONSTER IS STILL ALIVE AT ALL, THEY NEED TO DESCRIBE SOME MEANS OF IT DYING OR SOMETHING…

AND YEA REEVES IS GENIUS, FOR HIS STATEMENT ABOUT CLOVERFIELD MAY NOT HAVE BEEN THE ONLY MOVIE BEING FILMED…SO WILL WE BE SEEING SAY…VIRAL VIDEO’S POPPING UP OF OTHER PPL WHO WENT THROUGH THE TRAGEDY AND OTHER VIEWPOINTS OF THE ATTACK…

IF SO THAT SHUD HELP KEEP MOST OF US AT BAY UNTIL A SEQUEL MAY ACTUALLY COME…

  10. Gravatar

Hey, alright! Maybe this time they could shoot it on something respectable and call it, CLOVERFIELD 2: NOW YOU CAN ACTUALLY SEE WHAT’S GOING ON, AND DITCH THE AIRSICK BAG!

  11. Gravatar

um this movie sucked. I am one of those people demanding a refund, or a free voucher tot he sequel..cuz thats the only way i’ll see it. Scale of 1 to 10: 4

  12. Gravatar

for everyone who has seen the movie and followed the viral campaign… i thought the monster attack took place on 1-18-08… all of the viral storyline leading up to the movie was taking place these last few weeks… however the movie says the events took place in april/may… does anyone know anything about this?

i did really like the movie and the whole viral plot. they did a great job w/ this and it really enhanced the story of the movie for me. however w/ these two timeline differences… i’m kind of confused… did the movie actually not tie in to the viral campaign?

on a quick sidenote… i loved all the background scenes w/ the monster… the monster/hud scene towards the end was cool… but not as fulfilling as all the other scenes…

  13. Gravatar

My predicition: Two more Clovefield movies down the road, the director of Alien vs preddator will get his hands on the franchise and reduce it to a shoot em up lame fest of gi’s vs parasite monsters. All down artfully, of course.

  14. Gravatar

I thought the movie was awesome, and it totally worked for me. As far as I’m concerned within the story of the movie or potential sequel there is no need to know what it is or where it came from. I would just like to see a larger perspective of the event cobbled together from different viewpoints or file footage.

  15. Gravatar

There has to be a sequel or at least parallel storyline. For one, Lily didn’t die(sorry for spoilers but any critic review of the movie reveals the entire film) thus the original story lives on and most importantly there was no context to the film. It played out like the last 1.5 hours of a 2.5 hour movie, than a stand alone film. I’m all about minimalism in this age of over indulgence and using one’s imagination. But come on I don’t want to use my imagination to explain the entire movie or at least the most important parts. Also the idea of an hour or so worth of extra footage on the upcoming DVD to explain more of the movie seems rather ridiculous. Cloverfield is the type of movie sequels were intended for. I think the last audio bleep in the move after the credits is proof.

  16. Gravatar

GONZALO I AGREE….WITH U FOR THE MOST PART

  17. Gravatar

    Ugh dont make a sequel

    you’re going all Hollywood Matt!

And fuck those that demanded their money back, so many goddamn ignorant people in this world that need to be hand fed a movie. Pathetic.

  18. Gravatar

I think the monster was bred by Aliens, and sent to Earth, to test mankind’s ability to defend itself from a full scale invasion of these creatures, as a prelude to taking over the planet without having to fight themselves. How does that hypotheses sound for a sequel?

  19. Gravatar

I missed the ending after the credits part, but read about it online.. the movie kinda left me sad and still asking questions because nothing was explained…most people might not like that

I think there must be a paralell storyline or another video found from another group of people that the governement will find that can explain this story in another aspect…because there are so many unanswered questions…

I respect everyone’s point of view, but I don’t think people should view this movie as a conventional movie.. for the most part, it inolved the viewer and felt real.. I do not want to comment the sequel yet ( if there is one ).. It might bring us more answers to …I personally enjoyed CLOVERFIELD

  20. Gravatar

I personally think Cloverfield is quite possibly the best movie I have ever seen. The camera point of view really puts you in the movie and makes you feel like you are actually part of it, makes you seem like the monster is right there next to you, explosions are all around you, etc.
For those that complain about not knowing what happened, im SORRY this is a movie that doesnt hand feed you everything like a baby and actually makes you think for once. The movie is ingenious, the reason you dont really find out where its from, or what happened to it, is because it is from the perspective of a regular person living through this event, if you were a regular guy going through this, you would have no idea where this thing came from, what its doing, or whats happening on the other side of town, not knowing whats going on its all just part of the experience and perspective of the movie, and I am glad its that way.
As for a sequel, I dont know if they should make one, I mean of course I want to know more and watch more of the movie, because I loved it so much, but Cloverfield I think is a movie that should just be a one-shot deal, I have a feeling that a sequel would just sort of ruin the original movie, make it loose some of its greatness. But I dont doubt that the directors/producers have the potential to make a sequel, and make it equally as awesome

  21. Gravatar

GREAT MOVIE I LOVED IT . WASNT A WASTED OF TIME OR MONEY
…I THINK THEY SHOUL DMAKE A COVERFIELD 2.IT WOULD BE AWSOME IF THEY DID.SO THEY SHOULD

  22. Gravatar

Just saw the movie. Good message. The human race is not ready for anything, especially a huge monster that drips a chase you down and tear you up virus. Also I was surprised there was no flash news coverage with a little more monster fightjng the military that seemed to have little effect in its demise. The movie does give you alot of conversation candy with friends….you know like “if that happened to me I would go straight to the harbor and steal a boat to get to the mainland and I would have a shotgun and blast those creatures if they came after me, and I would totally be stocking up at the electronics store I phones Ipods laptops, gun store, Versace store, Gucci store, jewelery store, BMW dealership, furniture store, grocery store and Walmart….damn I’m gonna need a bigger boat!!!….moooo hahahaha

  23. Gravatar

I didn’t catch the audio bleep after the movie.

Can anyone tell me what it said, or what happened exactly?

(Sorry if this was posted above, I just skimmed)

    Thanks.

  24. Gravatar

i loved it ,,great way to make a movie,,,just a little to much camara jiggle,,monster looked great,,poeple were not that stupid,,,get over the 9 11 crap,,,its a monster!!!!!as far as i know they tend to make a mess of things!!!

  25. Gravatar

At the end of the credits, someone says(I think its Rob) “What now?”

  26. Gravatar

Um, a sequal would ruin the movie for me. Why explain things that are meant to be left unexplained? The whole point was to not know what this thing was…

  27. Gravatar

im not sure people were paying attention at the end of the movie, you could see something fall from the sky and hit the water. thats for the people still wondering where the monster came from.

  28. Gravatar

um phantom_pr dont mean to be rude but that wasnt the monster. on imdb it says taht JJ Abrams stated that it was the satilite used in the viral marketing. but good eye for catchin it. btw a sequel would be good if it explained a few things wthout ruining the magic of the monster. because if this is to become americas monster like godzillas is for japan, the creators need to think of a way to make this a successful franchise

  29. Gravatar

I think that after they died in the tunnel at the end they should have showed the death or whatever of the monster, the after math and what it really was, because the movie was great and i loved the whole documentary aspect of the movie, but I still wanted them to “step-back” and tell me all of those things, instead of another movie.

  30. Gravatar

The best way to kill a movie franchise is to make a sequel.

  31. Gravatar

    Zane,

Rob didn’t die. After the credits are played there is a short audio clip of him saying “What now?”, and, when played in reverse (in classic Abrams style) he says “It’s still alive…”.

    A+ Film, by the way.

  32. Gravatar

sequel?…the tape is being veiwed by the govts of the world along with everything else recovered from NY[so they mustve sent in troops to recover stuff like this ..obviously] in other words THEY dont know what it is either..pt2

…or if james cameron gets hold of it.. hopefully not … the tape its found amogst aincent archives ..futuristic marine go in to kill it…find loads of em.etc etc lol

  33. Gravatar

Considering the video was found as part of a government file, why not pick it up from the government reviewing the evidence i.e. the video, and follow the military film crew that documents the battle against the thing or maybe the over enthusiastic TV reporter who is willing to tail the military and risk their life to get footage (almost like that seen in Spielberg’s “War of the Worlds” when Tom Cruise runs into the News truck and gets the 411 on the walkers). Either way I think it should be told from the govt. point of view considering Abrahms has experience with making government agencies look different like “Alias”. Since the main character was set to take the job with the Japanese company resposible for releasing/creating the monster (see virals for “Slusho”) maybe he can be the one to crack the origins of the monster using his “connections” as VP (assuming it was Rob? who said “It’s still alive” at the end of creditsand he’s still alive)

Got it: Sequel starts with government interviewing Rob after finding him and film footage in Central Park, Jennifer Garner and Rob go undercover at SLUSHO to find out what happened and give the monster a brain freeze which will kill it!
