If you haven’t seen Cloverfield, than read no further as we’re about to enter spoiler territory.
Where did the Cloverfield Monster come from? Japan? The ocean near an offshore drilling site (as hinted by the viral)? Not so according to director Matt Reeves, who supposedly told Film School Rejects that an easter egg within the film tells of the Monster’s origins. Apparently in the background of the footage that HUD had taped over, when Rob and Beth were at Coney Island, “something suspicious” drops into the water.
While I very much believe this subtle easter egg is probably in the film’s final cut, I just don’t buy the reasoning. Beth and Rob’s trip to Coney Island took place in late April, but the monster waited a full month until late May to destroy New York City? Doesn’t sound too logical, especially considering the whole Tagruato viral storyline which was to set up the monster’s origins. But I could be missing something.

Whats funny is that during that scene, I was hoping they’d do something like that - like tease that something was in the water. And even though I was looking, I didn’t see a splash or any other odd activity.
Maybe it was there and I missed it. Or maybe Matt Reeves is hoping suckers will see the movie a second time.
January 18th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
Yeah in the end something def fell into the water. It was to the right side of the screen. It looked like a giant pill or somthing. This movie gave me a headache, but i still sorta liked it. Im interestd to see what kind of media this will spawn.
Cheers!
January 18th, 2008 at 8:49 pm
I just got back from seeing Cloverfield. It was a solid movie - it lived up to what I expected. I dont ask much of movies though. I didnt see anything drop into the water at the end. If that was in the final cut it was very subtle
January 18th, 2008 at 9:28 pm
Ruh-roh. I smell sequel potential here with the Easter egg ending. It came from space, and the chick that survives in the evac helicopter becomes a Ripley type having survived the previous monster. Please tell me I’m wrong, as that would be terrible.
Really I think we’re not supposed to know the monster’s origin. It’s a “why do they hate us?” sort of unanswerable question. But the look of the thing and the parasites would indicate some kind of oceanic origin. Hmmm…
January 18th, 2008 at 9:45 pm
I saw the splash at the end as well
It looked like it was out slightly behind and to the left of the ship on the far right hand of the screen… to be precise.
I couldn’t make out what it was either. I freaked out when I saw it though.
January 18th, 2008 at 9:54 pm
So, this is just the luckiest camcorder on the planet then, not only documenting the entire attack, but just happens to catch the moment the creature lands weeks in advance to the exact moment of splashdown. Come on
January 18th, 2008 at 10:19 pm
There was definitely a splash in the distance, right before he turned the camera back onto himself and Beth.
January 18th, 2008 at 10:31 pm
Did they blow the monster up?
January 18th, 2008 at 10:46 pm
Can anyone get amateur footage of this scene so we can slow it down and analyze it?
January 18th, 2008 at 11:00 pm
It will be on the torrent sites soon. I was looking for *something* as well. I expected a slight ripple or something…
January 18th, 2008 at 11:01 pm
omfg i wanna know what the egg thing was about it cood uh been a flaw n the movie n not rele a part of it…. i hate the monster……….. i expected better of the movie…
o wellz!!!!!
January 18th, 2008 at 11:02 pm
Possibly some kind of egg/meteorite from space falling into the ocean???
January 18th, 2008 at 11:03 pm
After the ending credits have completely run through, garbled radio static can be heard with the phrase “It’s still alive” played in reverse
January 18th, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Is that true???
January 18th, 2008 at 11:09 pm
yes, it even says it on wikipedia.com ;x
January 18th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
I bet the monster fell from space (in a slumber) and woke up a month later near the drilling site, it was disturbed so it attacked, it then went to new york where the movie begins
January 18th, 2008 at 11:42 pm
I hear the “its still alive” but i did not see the ripple in the water, I am going to see the movie again to see it. I LOVED the movie. Honestly I think it is a piece of art. I do not think there will be a sequal though, it is soo brilliant, the director just wants everyone to be afraid or anticipate a sequal I think.
January 18th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Just came back from seeing Cloverfield a second time already and there was definitley something that splashed into the water near the boat. It wasnt that big so its improbable that that was the monster somehow. Rumor has it that whatever fell was part of the Tagurato satellite.
But beyond that the movie was spectacular, everything that I’d hoped it would be. And obviously good enough to see twice.
January 18th, 2008 at 11:56 pm
Beautiful movie. Very nice setup for sequel. I hope Cloverfield2 will start with most of US dominated by these creatures.
January 19th, 2008 at 12:17 am
I AGREE THIS MOVIE, IN A MORE PHILOSOPHICAL STAND POINT… IS A GREAT PIECE OF ART, NOT THE MOST CLEAN ART BUT VERY ABSTRACT AND ATTENTION DRAWING. IM SATISFIED WITH WHAT IT GAVE ME, THOUGH LIKE EVERYBODY ELSE I HAVE QUESTIONS…
AS FAR AS THE CONEY ISLAND SCENE, I WAS WATCHING AND ANTICIPATING SOMETHING TO FALL OR FOR THERE TO BE SOMETHING NOTE WORTHY BUT, I DIDN’T SEE ANYTHING…
ALSO I THINK WE CAN ALL CONCLUDE THE ONLY MAIN CHARACTER TO SURVIVE WAS LILLY???
IF INFO ARISES, KEEP ME POSTED….
January 19th, 2008 at 1:03 am
There are few movies - in my life - that have impacted me the way Cloverfied has done. The Exorcist, Aliens, and to a lesser degree, ID4. For those of you that are critisizing the cryptic ending and (rather effective or you wouldn’t be whinning) video cam perspective, I would suggest that if you want an ABC-123 what you see is all you get experience; then go buy a ticket for Set Up 2 the Streets! Abrams chose to let the viewer fill in the blanks; and effected brilliantly. Godzilla, Old or New, never scared anybody and neither did King Kong. The Cloverfield monster and parasitic guests are original villains and scary. The differnce between the Blair Witch perspective and the Cloverfield perspective is that - in Blair Witch - you were watching those poor souls as they experienced their unfortunate odessy; the Cloverfield victims take you there with them in a dramatically different way. We should never see a Cloverfield 2 Epic. The possibilities should forever remain a mystery…..(just like a good book :)
January 19th, 2008 at 1:04 am
notice on rottentomatoes.com, all of the reviews despising the movie were all written by old farts in their late 40’s, 50’s. cloverfield was very well put together. with all the media hype and jj fucking with our heads up until the release date, we all were sucked in. good or bad, people bought into it.
cheers.
January 19th, 2008 at 1:11 am
I saw this movie earlier tonight. I thought it was pretty interesting. I did see the splash in the water at the end, and I’m still creeped out about it.
January 19th, 2008 at 1:22 am
the thing that dropped in the water was deffinitly an egg. and it took a fewmonthes to hatch and grow. it came from space thats why i think and it seems certian
January 19th, 2008 at 1:40 am
ya i just saw this movie and it was sweeeet. I was 3 rows back and i didnt get sick to my stomach at all, neither did the people i was with. I really liked it and i hope they make a sequel. And yes there is a splash in the ocean at the end scene. If you watch it again look on the right side of the screen and it comes from outer space(probably) and splashes into the ocean. They need to make a sequel, but idk how they would because its kind of one of those movies that you can;t really duplicate, kinda a one time thing. But I still hope they make one.. gimme some answers!!!!!
January 19th, 2008 at 2:10 am
I didn’t see the thing dropping near the end (course I didn’t know to look for it). Given the viral videos of it destroying an oil platform, maybe it was some sort of beacon type thing to lead it to New York?
I also didn’t hear that staticy “It’s still alive.” Guess I have a couple things to look for on the DVD release.
January 19th, 2008 at 3:07 am
loooved the movie! Brilliant piece of film! They could so do a sequel with the parasites that the monster dropped…have them grow into the same type monster and apparently…”it’s still alive”! I freaked out during this movie…and i was a lil drunk at the time! Didnt see a splash…or at least i dont remember seeing one! Once again…loved
January 19th, 2008 at 6:37 am
Ok I guess I have to be the bad guy, cause after reading your replies I dont think we saw the same movie. While we all agree the movie was “entertaining”, calling it a Piece of Art is a stretch. Everything in this movie has been done before and is perdictable, down to the producer’s signature “leave you clueless” style, which will hurt this movie like the way it was killing “Lost” before the writer’s strike. (ok if you don’t know, ratings on lost were rapidly declining since season two) While I will give tremendous “props” for keeping this movie secret from the first time the trailer was aired, to the day of its release, all the movie did was perpetuate the “wtf” factor. All I’m left with is a story about a guy chasing after his love. A gigantic monster just happens to be in his way. The whole “artistical symblism to 9/11″ is just a way to ease that in-different feeling you have about sitting to watch 74 minutes of a movie without substance. I mean, its great that the director chose to be realistic about the effects crashing buildings in a city packed with skycrapers, but thats all you have for reasoning.
January 19th, 2008 at 8:27 am
So, after seeing the film, and reading a number of things about it before the premiere, and after, I have to say that this film is indeed a step into the right direction. Yes, some of the techniques have been done before, but that doesn’t take away from the artistic nature. If you actually believe that true art must never have been done before then you have no concept of art, as all artists steal. But if you must steal, steal from the best.
What Cloverfield is, is a throwback to monster movies. Think of it as Godzilla without the rubber suit, and from the perspective of those that are on the ground. It should have been more violent (like it was originally written to be) but that was nicely handled. If anything was disappointing it was the monster itself, as the minions didn’t seem to fit the main monster. The mini creatures looked similar to creatures from Pitch Black, and Starship Troopers. The main monster does have a complete other-worldly feel, but it doesn’t look like something that is supposed to survive out of the water.
As far as a sequel is concerned. I do expect one, but if it is done right, they don’t have to bring in another creature. (Besides, for a film that cost $25 mil to double that in the first weekend… It’s a no-brainer) They just have to use another camera, and tell a different story from that perspective. This story is about a man who goes after his lost love, and how his friends try to help him, but get killed along the way. Another perspective could be from the military perspective, as there are a lot of things going on in the city. Is this the only city that is attacked? I think it’s safe to say that in NYC there are a lot of cameras as there are a LOT of amateur filmmakers that have their cameras with them all the time, it isn’t a far stretch to imagine that some “other footage” was recovered.
January 19th, 2008 at 8:57 am
the best thing about cloverfield…. the writers/producers don’t try to explain away the monster. As with Aliens, Predator, Pitch Black, or as far as Starship Troopers we are told what these thigns were. With Cloverfield we are not. Which - in my opinion - makes movies better than ‘escapism’. We are left to imagine for ourselves what it was meant to be.
A 2nd movie would hurt the story. Whats JJ options? Another handheld movie? A news story? Another discovered digital camera? Come on. People just don’t think out of the box. Some people just have to have answers to what they don’t understand. That adds to the ?? factor.
But, enjoy it for what it is a great movie for it’s genre, and it opens up avenues for discussion over coffe or beer after the movie is over. Besides, the only person that knows or would be willing to tell is JJ. Just got to wait till the DVD.
January 19th, 2008 at 9:23 am
I know most people were fine seeing this movie, but if you know that you get motion sick, don’t see it!! I took dramamine, motion sickness medicine before going because I knew what to expect, but even with that I was sick to my stomach after five minutes and couldn’t watch the rest of the movie. I sat through it because I was with my brother, but I had my eyes closed almost the whole time to keep from vomiting. I did open my eyes a few times to see the monster and the smaller spider-like creatures and what I saw was very cool, however I was soon sick again and sitting there pissed off and sick with my eyes closed. I wish I could have watched more of it because everyone else seemed to enjoy it. I will probably have to wait until it comes out on dvd and watch it on a smaller screen, that might prevent some of the motion sickness. Also, it was probably as bad as it was because the movie was packed and we had to sit right in front of the screen in the third row. If you don’t get motion sick, then go enjoy a pretty entertaining film, if you do, then stay away until it’s on dvd. My brother and I are also very interested about the ending. How cool would it be if this was an introduction to a sequal and it turns out to be based on H.P. Lovecraft’s “Call of Cthulhu”!!
January 19th, 2008 at 9:44 am
Saw the movie last night, and I liked it. It did leave room for a sequel, and I believe that the sequel will be Godzilla (Zilla) vs/ the Cloverfield Monster. Maybe…
January 19th, 2008 at 9:48 am
I loved the movie but does anyone know why they called it cloverfield.
January 19th, 2008 at 10:01 am
I LOVED ‘Cloverfield.’ It absolutely lived up to the hype and the monster was AWESOME. I wanted to see so much more of it killing people! I did not catch the “egg-thing” dropping into the water at the end when they showed the Coney Island footage shot amonth or so before the attack-but I think it’s brilliant that they did that!
I will def see it again with someone who hasn’t seen it yet (it’s fun that way :)
I LIVE for original movies like ‘Cloverfield’….mixed feelings about a sequel–they tend to diminish the original, unless it’s a “Bourne..” sequel.
Anyway, I want more of this monster….
January 19th, 2008 at 10:12 am
i thought the movie was great, i was thinking a sequel that will show more of origins, but not as a traditional sequel.. it would not be filmed the same way, as it might show the events from another POV.
leaving the original movie in tact.
January 19th, 2008 at 11:52 am
Theres a lot more to this story then meets the eye. They Didnt Mention Slusho, Tagruato, or T.I.D.O, or anything. I want to know more about the “deep sea nectar” that tagruato uses inside the slusho drink. What connection does it have with the creature, what about the UFO, or the pictures on 1-18-08.com, the new ones are amazing btw…Im sure the story will continue but not in movie form, but I bet there will be comicbooks or graphic novels. just like AVP. I think the real info will be on the web honestly, for the true fans to find.
January 19th, 2008 at 12:03 pm
I have been looking forward to this movie since I first heard about it (about a year!). I was VERY disappointed with the shaky cam for the ENTIRE movie! I do understand why it was used, but the buddy I went with got sick! A “loose” steady cam would have been better and just as effective.
I have never seen so many people get up and walk out of a movie before. Boos and hisses at the ending from the crowd! Someone even tossed in a “that movie sucked!” I don’t agree.
I liked it. I just want to watch it again (at home) and I think I’ll like it even more. I do think there should have been a second movie released two weeks later - a standard movie from a military perspective (throw in some hot scientist chicks etc) and have the two movies cross over for content - just with a different POV and provide a bit more info. This would build up the “franchise” and get people more pumped about Cloverfield.
From the reaction of the crowd that I was with - I give Cloverfield a strong first week run with heavy drop off. I still give it a 7/10.
January 19th, 2008 at 12:28 pm
It wasn’t supposed to be named Cloverfield. That was the production name to keep it a secret, but it was leaked onto the internet so heavily, that they decided to keep it.
January 19th, 2008 at 12:32 pm
i did not see the egg splash but a friend of mine, who was in the same theatre at the same time, said he saw an egg at that exact part at coney island. i went home, looked online and saw that something did splahs at that part and that he was correct so i do think there was something there. also, i believe there will be a sequel……….this time in japan……..with a side dish of pikachu
January 19th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
The thing most people seem to be forgetting is that this “movie” is not really a movie. It’s footage of an event which happens to be part of a bigger story. The Cloverfield footage we saw in theaters is just another clue to unravel the bigger story. Whatever gripes about “plot/substance” that people are having aren’t relevant because it is not even a traditional “movie” in any sense. Like it or not, the film is entertainment and we’ve all been suckered into the lore of “Cloverfield”. Personally, I’ll be waiting for more developments. JJ is clever, can’t deny that.
January 19th, 2008 at 12:59 pm
Ok I saw the movie. I thought it was ok but the ending was horrible. I am all for a bit of mystery to the movie, but just like Lost, the story starts and you feel like you are going to get something but by the end theres just alot of people dead, there may or may not be a monster/black smoke in the city/island. In addition the whole “Viral Story” is a real letdown. You advertise the movie on TV, then you add a story somewhere I have to hunt up? I looked at the Wiki page and checked out 3 of the pages. A drink, a picture of a newsletter posted so fuzzy its illegible, and a collection of 10 videos of a girl talking to a camera then cutting up a bear. Obviously I am not getting something somewhere. If anyone knows of a webpage where the viral story is laid out please let me know. Id love to not miss out on it.
All in all I enjoyed it but just like with his Lost product, the ending or lack thereof leaves me dissapointed rather than wanting more. Id definitely go see a sequel, even if it was another day with a few more kids who find a camcorder and record their way out of Day 2. I just wouldnt get so excited and go opening night again. Fool me once, shame on me… Fool me twice and I just wonder why I am still TiVoing Lost. =*(
January 19th, 2008 at 1:16 pm
There are 2 distinct possibilities about the egg thing falling into the water…I have analyzed amateur footage of the movie. I have a friend who uses forensic technology software to identify objects in digital or film photography. After hours of looking at the Cloverfield footage to define that portion of the film in question, there are really only 2 possible explanations or conclusions: (1) Judging from the colours apparent on the object just before it hits the water, it must be some kind of alien easter egg or (2) when speeding up the audio “roar” of the monster, it definitely has the “buck buck cluck” sound of a chicken.
Now, putting these two facts together, one can only assume you have one pissed off big ass chicken on the rampage in New York City. Judgement day for the Colonel and those who would partake in an extra crispy dinner time curriculum after all these years. The movie should have been more aptly called “PETA’S REVENGE”!!! YAAAAAAAAHHH BABEEEEEE :-)
January 19th, 2008 at 2:42 pm
The whole point of the viral campaign…slusho and all the internet stuff…was just to generate buzz and get people inside the theaters. It’s not part of some wider JJ Abrams conspiracy or plot or storyline or anything. What you saw in the movie was the end result of all of it.
I thought ‘Cloverfield’ was good and fairly clever but certainly not the greatest ever. It was a novelty movie and was fairly entertaining. End of story.
January 19th, 2008 at 2:53 pm
For a sequal they should have the attack on NY on new reports, and as people hear about what happened in NY the monster should start tearing up other places in the country
January 19th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
Honestly, I think everyone is thinking too hard about this.
Clearly, the Cloverfield monster came from Maine. There’s nothing in the movie the contradict that this is anything other than a sequel to The Mist.
January 19th, 2008 at 3:06 pm
I say taking a dump was more intresting then Cloverfield. Peice of Art my ass! I do not see why anyone can be saying that movie was all that. I want my hard earn money back. On a scale to 1 to 10 with 10 being outstanding. I give it a -10. All I know is I need that video recorder cause man that sucker had one hell of a battery life and stood up to a lot of abuse like being almost eaten by a monster, surives a crash and a bridge falling in on it and it still works. Amazing. Don’t go waste your money or time on this awful movie. Take a motion sickness pill before you go because with all that moving around with the camera will make you sick.
January 19th, 2008 at 3:14 pm
If you get motion sickness then don’t see the movie, and don’t complain that it sucked. The movie was supposed to seem more realisitic from the people’s point of view, not the audience’s.
Does anyone even know what the monster was though? It reminded me of those land things from Tremors, it was like a spider/crab/monter entity thing.
January 19th, 2008 at 3:44 pm
There is a splash to the right side of the screen when they’re filming the shore at Coney Island in the Apr. 27th footage. It looked like a meteorite. It could be the monster in infancy and it took a month for it to grow to full size.
January 19th, 2008 at 4:04 pm
I am 55 years old, I rate cloverfield up there with Frankenstien (Karloff), Jaws, Alien and Aliens, it is original, fresh and has the only ending that it could have and be so great.
Anyone that knocks this movie should spend the rest of their life forced to watch Dragon Wars over and over again, but they probably like it.
As far as the one who said at rottentomatoes those coming down on Cloverfield were in their 40’s and 50’s guess what some of us in our 50’s liked it as well.
I wish I had seen it before I am Legend which was a let down. If you have read the book you know what I mean or the two movies done off the book before I am Legend.
January 19th, 2008 at 4:10 pm
As far as something falling in the water a month before if it took a while to hatch a month may not be out of the question.
Either the creature (I do not like calling it a monster):
1. Fell from Space
2. Was released from a deep trench in the ocean.
3. Due to global warming an ice berg melted and released the egg.
4, Created by the Government and the name Cloverfield refers to the project.
5. It was created by Japan and dropped on NY as payback for Godzilla done in NY.
Let me know if you can think of a new reason for the creature, by the way I love how so many things were left up to us to decide on what it meant or was.
January 19th, 2008 at 5:47 pm
I don’t think the time-frame is off at all. Depending on the Monster’s nature it may have needed that time to (hatch? gestate? recover? morph?) get up. Plus I decided that it had to be an alien based on the parasites alone (parasites and hosts are an ecosystem, so the monster had to come from some place) since something of that nature has never been on Earth before. As for the Tagruato stuff: It was probably misdirection to throw us into a speculative frenzy, I figure that stuff was going on simultaneously.
So yes, I believe there was more than one of those things. Maybe even different creatures landed from a floating hunk of rock that broke up in space. Not a totally original concept, but plausible.
January 19th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
i didnt really see anything either…ill probably have to go see it again.
1 guy 2 seats down from me threw up because the camera movement!!!
January 19th, 2008 at 6:40 pm
so a large egg fall from wherever without anybody noticing including the us government?, no radar on that day? And a meteor just snuke past the naked eye and telescopes? A metoer the size of a basketball will leave a trail stuff cant just crash on the eatsern seaboard without anybody noticing cmon now . I am upset at the lack of explanation I had higher hopes for this movie I give it a c-
January 19th, 2008 at 7:01 pm
Wait, so some of you guys can suspend disbelief long enough to accept that a monster is attacking new york, yet you can’t accept that there might not be information readily available within the first few hours of it seemingly coming out of nowhere? Get real.
As for the creature not being noticed crashing into the water without being noticed: You tend to not see things you aren’t looking for.
Hundreds of objects fall out of the sky on a daily basis and there isn’t a thing we can do about it. Radar can only tell that something is there, not what it is.
January 19th, 2008 at 7:02 pm
Great movie!!! I plan on seeing it again to see that splash at the end.
I have some question thou:
Rob says 7 hours have passed since the monster attacked right? How did the military get there so fast with troops, tanks, etc. it seemed like they got there in 1 to 2 hours (fast) and how did they now that they needed bio suits. They also knew that the one girl was going to explode.
January 19th, 2008 at 8:45 pm
First of all who said no one saw it fall and who said it was not the reason the military was already there to begin with…
if you ask people on the streets about what happened today or even a month ago you might be surprised with the answer.
If something the size of a basket ball fell in the water it might make news for a day or so unless there is more found and made public (like the government would do that) there is no reason that a month later they even would talk about it.
Remember this is from the point of view of a few people in their 20’s and unless more is said about what fell a month earlier they may have missed the news about it altogher.
As far as the story being original, show me a truly orignial story in the past 25 years.
Even Alien was stolen from a movie in the 50’s with costumes done for a totally different idea.
Jaws was Moby Dick re done with a shark.
I mean really folks if you want original you better go back 60 years or more, because most movies have stolen from other ideas.
I am Legend is the second remake of the original done in the 40’s, National Treasure which I like is Indiana Jones, and if you look close enough Star Wars was a rip off of 30’s and 40’s pirate movies and Star Trek’s creator said he made Trek based on old west in space and a lot of the episodes were westerns done in space.
The problem is if you can not enjoy a movie with a new way of being shown (no it is not Blair Witch they wish they did it as well), well you may have problems with new releases.
Batman, Ironman, Hulk, Hell Boy, etc are all comic books done into movies, Spiderman 1-3 and Xmen are all comics not new at all.
And now they are remaking When Worlds Collide, The Day The Earth Stood Still, they have remade Planet of the Apes, War of the Worlds, etc.
So please show me a truly original movie done since 1950?
As far as this being the best movie ever well to me it rates in the top 5.
While watching the previews I saw movies coming out that had any where from 1-3 remakes or different versions done of them in the past.
A remake of a good movie is stupid and if it was not good what makes someone thing the remake will be, most of the time they are worse.
January 19th, 2008 at 10:14 pm
As to Joel’s post, you’re a dolt. You can’t believe the fact that the camera survived the movie….but you’ll go see a movie about a monster that isn’t real? You make no sense whatsoever my friend.
As for the movie, it was everything I expected. I followed all the viral and am satisfied with how J.J. put everything together. I plan on seeing it again this weekend just for the hell of it. And as for a sequel, my friend and I had an idea that the military could be watching the video that Hud took in an attempt to understand what happened, or to better understand the monster. In the meantime, the monster is still destroying the city. I’d be happy with a sequel, I’d be happy without it, heck I’d have been happy if I never even saw the monster at all. Great movie, 9 stars. Anyone who rags on it is a dolt and nobody wants to hear your negative remarks.
January 19th, 2008 at 10:18 pm
Gosh, you people need to open your minds. So because it fell from the air it had to have come from space, making it an alien? What if it was carried on a plane or a helicopter which happened to drop (either accidentally or purposefully) the “baby monster”? Just a thought. If slusho or anything else have anything to do with the creature, it doesn’t necessarily mean they had to have been directly involved.
January 19th, 2008 at 11:12 pm
Hey, did you also watch how the monster walked? It sort of had strides similar to an ape in a way. Which now makes more sense because I posted back on Jan 7 on the other page here (confirmed is a viral site…) about the Tagruato site (which incidentally has some japanese warning and a ! on the front page so it is unaccessible right now….hhhmmm.) and one of their subsidieries, Bold Futura, and their mashap in space, here is what I lifted from the site:
Hatsui Satellite Works for the Futura
Visions of success for Tagruato’s Bold Futura subsidiary are no longer limited by gravity. In its first month orbiting Earth, the satellite “Hatsui†has been at peak performance—busily collecting data and securing samples…. In their latest gesture to reach out to fellow man, Tagruato used the Hatsui satellite to try to identify a rogue piece that is thought to have fallen off of the Japanese Government’s “ChimpanzIII†satellite. Although Hatsui’s work has not yet been able to confirm the identity of the fallen piece, Tagruato scientists and engineers are busily trying to track and recover the fragment. According to Hatsui data, it disappeared into the Atlantic Ocean late last week.
the satellite is called ChimpanzIII !!! Could something have been going on up there and some ape got all messed up with what ever kind of experiments went on and it crashed back to earth, confused and disorintated and probably a bit messed in the head from all the work. Poor wild animal (albeit huge) just trying to figure itself and where it is out.

Was totally looking forward to a cool movie - a few cool scenes and ideas but overall a huge disappointment - Blair Witch was phenomenally better - suspension of disbelief is one thing, watching them supposedly walk up 57 stories, climb across the leaning second Time Warner tower, go down to 39, pull Beth off the rebar she was impaled on, go back up to 57th floor, climb back over to other tower, go back down 57 floors, come on. And then Beth could run like the wind, then they survive the helicopter crash? …and selfish Rob, dragging his friends to their deaths to save Beth, while he moons over a romance that never was, and the world is ending and a nuclear bomb is gonna go off in a minute and Rob and Beth focus on making a cheesy farewell video…come on, and Lily kept her heels on like two thirds of the movie? And are you really gonna be afraid of rats when this giant monster is leveling the city? and the statue of liberty head money shot, you have seen it so many times already that you can’t even react to it, it’s just embarrassing. Just goes to show that all the MySpace YouTube FaceBook technology/social trends aren’t making people smarter and better, they’re really enabling people to be more stupid and vapid, this is definitely StupidMovie for StupidPeople.

Possible answers to some questions. How did the troops get to NY so fast? Lets see there are only 4-5 or more bases within 2hrs of NYC. Not to mention the ones that are in NYC already working with Homeland Security. And as for the bio suits, come on. When the “fleas” or whatever come off and start biting the troops and random people the doctors are going to notice the side effects. That and the main creature is oozing or bleeding. Not to mention the dead creatures bagged for study. We’re talking combined effort here people. I’m sure the CDC has people in NYC too. In the real world, if there are rabid squirrels in the park attacking people, the animal control people are going to be wearing some sort of protective equipment to collect and handle the animals.
Good movie! Too bad there are some people who can’t sit still or keep their freaking gobs shut during a movie. That is the only thing that ruined my experience. Stupid ones that can not see the “Property of U.S. Government” and the different classification numbers at the beginning of the movie. Which gave me the feel that this was at least a 3rd generation copy of archived footage being viewed at a much later date. Probably years later. And course the idiots that booed and yelled “**ck” as they stomped out, didnt get it. Tragic events documented over “a good day” video, very nice dramatic contrast.
January 20th, 2008 at 12:09 am
I like DingoBoy’s theory. A piece of the satellite crashing back to Earth makes sense. If the Slushi drink supposedly makes you “grow as big as a whale” and the special ingredient happens to be deep in the ocean (where the satellite chunk fell) then the monster feeding on this to grow to a massive size would not be much of a stretch. Just a theory though…
January 20th, 2008 at 1:57 am
I didn’t happen to catch the egg falling into the water at the end.
the way you talk about it all i can think of is one of those dino spounges. you know they start as a pill looking thing just add water then about 30 mins. later they grow. Well all i can say is that would be a big spounge and might take longer then 30 mins. to take shape. lol
good movie though I loved it.

Cloverfield
#1 - The nickname given to Manhattan after it’s mass destruction.
#2 - The “monster” is actually a result of Japanese biological warfare tests that were covertly conducted in space as reported by the privately owned Tagruato Satellite called ‘Project Slusho’. Several primate species were cross-bread and exposed to experimentive virulent chemicals to test viral strength, behavior, and immunity.
#3 - Sometime in early March, Project Slusho suffered a detrimental and catastrophic setback when an explosion occurred on the Tagruato Satellite and communication was indefinitely lost with the crew. Several pieces of debris reportedly landed on earth. One piece, that best can be described as a large egg, landed in the Atlantic Ocean near Brooklyn, NY.
#4 - In fact, this explosion was staged - and the drop, targeted.
Future documentaries will explore the origin of Project Slusho, the nature of the experiments performed, the Cloverfield virus, and the fate of the entire North America continent.

Smarbajj I like what you stated, I can see it being dropped from a satelite, or from an aircraft flying over NY that had troubles and the egg fell from.
It really does not matter I liked the film and the person who did not like it and knocked them climbing 57 floors, etc must not to date found a movie they have liked, I mean if you want to get down to it Alien, Aliens one woman fights them all where all the men are killed fights and wins even against a queen. And what about Jaws shooting a tank of air on a sinking ship blowing up a great while.
I mean if we want to nic pic no movie will stand up I wish he would of left his favorite so I could nic pic it for him but either he had no favorite or was afraid if he left it he would learn it was no better than any other.
Blair Witch, give me a break there is a big difference, first of all it is a few kids and gets down to one telling the story, where here it is all of NYC and given as from ones view point but still done in a way that we do not have to keep seeing snot running down his nose every two seconds.
If you knock cloverfield leave what movies you think are better so we can understand where you are coming from and if you can not them do not say anything.
January 20th, 2008 at 11:07 am
You know what I like a movie that:
1. Did not show me the creature in detail even though from what I saw was good and I would love to see better.
2. A movie that got me to think not lead me by the nose as if I had no brain to think for myself.
3. That ended like it did not as most do, but with the possibility that every died. As with AVP-R where in the beginning a 10-12 year old kid is attacked by a face hugger and is used to bring an alien into the earth, and the ending where everyone (I know what was it four lived) died.
4. Plus I just like the movie I have been a movie fan for 50 years, worked with the studios in the mid 70’s to early 80’s and I find Cloverfield very refreshing and can not wait to see what JJ does with Trek.
January 20th, 2008 at 12:01 pm
My question is how the hell did they get from the 6-train station at Spring Street to the 59th street so quickly…
Great flick. I did catch the splash at the end and was totally freaked out. Excellent fun flick and frankly there doesn’t need to be a sequel.
January 20th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
it probably came from the old ones temple. If don’t understand read up on your mythos. it was probably drawn here by the drilling. The history of Slusho might explain the monstrosity of it. Its from the color out of space.
January 20th, 2008 at 2:05 pm
First off I must say that I did like the movie. I thought it was well done and kept me interested and also stimulated the imagination. There were however, technical flaws that drove me nuts…. 1) a M-109a6 Paladin firing on the move? The Paladin is a Self propelled Howitzer and cannot fire on the move 2) a M-1a2 Abrams Main Battle Tank Firing its main gun while infantry is deployed directly in front. The Infantry would have been killed by the muzzle blast from the gun(Watch footage of Abrams firing in Iraq) . Let me state that I can live with these things for the sake of dramatic effect but the third thing that really drove me nutz which I hope they can put together a good explanation for is the scene of a B-2 Stealth Bomber dropping 2000Lb GBU-32 JDAMs (Join Direct Attack Munitions) on the creature and apparently causing no damage. now at the very least big chunks of the creature would have been blown off and I counted at least 5 of the bombs hitting it in rapid order.
Anyway as i stated it was a great movie and I did like it very much it could have just been a little bit more accurate tech. wise for me.
January 20th, 2008 at 7:26 pm
according to the viral advertising the thing that fell in the ocean at the end of the movie was actually a satelite from the taraguto or whatever company. the monster came up from a trench that was disturbed during the drilling for slusho which was made from deep sea nectar. i’m pretty sure this is the most plausable story. things live in the trenches of our oceans that no human have ever seen, as a biology major, i know this. its not that far fetched, except for the extreme size… you know, and the whole destruction thing.
January 20th, 2008 at 7:44 pm
Dragon, who says the creature isn’t strong enough to withhold those bombs?
January 20th, 2008 at 7:50 pm
Hmmm interesting movie but I do have to say there were a few scenes that just seem to be a little much and I agree with the 57 floors comment by DPS above. I’ve done real stair climbing and either I’m really out of shape or something but they would have been seriously winded but I guess with adreneline anything is possible. Smarbajj has a really good theory or if that is really the story sounds pretty good. Not knowing where it came from left me on a quest to search the web to piece it together. I wish the movie would have been longer than an hour and 20min. Over all I liked it but as a history buff it really left me wanting to know more about the creature and how it got started.
January 20th, 2008 at 8:08 pm
This movie was cool. Great entertainment.
To sit here and read people dissecting it with
“logic” and “common sense” points makes me
cringe. For chrissakes, suspend your disbelief for
2 seconds and appreciate that it was
a spectacle. Immerse yourself and enjoy.
Do not fight it, you just make yourself miserable,
and all of us.
Yes, this was quite a well-placed camcorder, how could
it have all seen that??? And how the hell can people climbe
500′ of stairs, descend another 200, climb again with
an impaled victim…you could go on and on. The movie
was about a monster invading NY damnit, lighten up! LOL
January 20th, 2008 at 8:33 pm
While no, we never explicitly saw the creature killed, it is interesting to note that the last picture posted on 1-18-08.com was several large chunks of meat, suffering major battle damage. Maybe it’s a snack the critter had before coming ashore, but I think it’s the creature’s remains, washed up after being killed. As much as I loved it (which is quite a bit, it lived up to my every expectation!), I hope they don’t do a sequel. Anything else after this might just cheapen what was a good, stand alone movie. After all, look at what happened to Blair Witch 2. I’m content to let this be, and have the questions never really get answered. After all, the more questions are asked, the longer the interest stays alive; the fact that we went to see this movie based off a brief, vague trailer we saw half a year ago, not to mentioned debated endlessly over, is proof of that. Maybe it was alien, maybe it was a mutant, maybe maybe maybe. Whatever it was, it was entertaining.
January 20th, 2008 at 9:08 pm
When they are on the bridge you see another person with a handheld camcorder. If I had to wager a guess I would say if they make a “sequel” from a different perspective it will be from that person and you’ll see our main characters from this one in it. And yes, there’s definitely something that falls into the water at the end. Looks like a capsule or something.
January 20th, 2008 at 9:25 pm
I can certainly imagine there were lots of people with camcorders, cell phones, digital cameras. After all, this is an age where people will shoot a video of them lighting their own hand on fire, just to post it on the internet (don’t believe me? Here’s the link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QorHMng3HiE ) Many people would naturally want to document it, for a lot of the same reasons Hud continues to film, “people will want to know how it went down.” To say that because another camera is evidence of a sequel is a bit far fetched. If we want to go that route, how about the girl at the party you see filming Rob on her camera, or the news agencies in New York covering the event?
January 20th, 2008 at 9:58 pm
so what’s up with all those “real time” events that were unfolding prior to the movie’s release? If everything was parallel to the events of the movie, why are the dates shown in the videocamera way off? what’s up with all the characters’ myspace profiles pointing toward Rob’s party on the 18th of january? Does anyone have a satisfying explanation for this?
January 20th, 2008 at 10:35 pm
okay so the only thing i dont get at all is the “secret ingredient” in the slusho drink. what does it have to do with anything at all? did the creature drink it and then get huge or what?
and why would the drop and explosion be on purpose?
January 20th, 2008 at 11:25 pm
Perhaps the “little splash” at the end is the monster in its early stage. an egg like first stage? A month later (April-May), it “somehow” grew to the size seen in the movie. Not completely ridiculous actually… I mean, look at the aliens from the Alien movies, verry quick growth too, this ones just even faster! xD
movie was great
January 20th, 2008 at 11:31 pm
So, if it’s from outer space…
All that viral advertising crap meant nothing?
JC
January 21st, 2008 at 12:30 am
Just a couple of things I wanted to mention. The only part of the camcorder that would have to survive would be the tape. And as far as the battery life goes it only had to record a little over an hours worth. Hud would probably have stopped filming on the long walk through the tunnles and up the stairs. The only thing that I’m really curious about is why the bites make people explode?
Of course i want to know where the monster came from and what not, but all that is secondary to the story, kind of like Donnie Darko. It doesn’t matter so much why it happened, as much as that it happened and this is how the people reacted.
January 21st, 2008 at 12:44 am
I could hav swore the radio message at the end said “is that it?”
January 21st, 2008 at 9:03 am
The odds of a monster attacking New York is far more likely than ANY camera taking that much abuse and still working!!!
January 21st, 2008 at 9:33 am
I’m gonna say that it was probably an egg. Otherwise, it would have been a bit more noticeable. It took a month to hatch, plain and simple.
January 21st, 2008 at 9:38 am
I don’t understand.. where are you getting this slushi idea from? was it mention in the movie? I don’t member hearing anything about it. I missed the object falling. or atleast wasn’t paying attention. but I really did enjoy the movie. scared the hell out of me lol! but the ending did have me thinking ‘wtf’. since I wanted to know more about the creature and its origin. o well. ill def would see it again. hell prob this weekend. :]

PLEASE READ PLEASE READ PLEASE READ PLEASE READ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I WISH I COULD HAVE REPLIED EARLIER BUT FOR THOSE OF YOU WHO READ DOWN THIS LIST I CAN TELL YOU EXACTLY WHEN THAT THING HITS THE WATER……..AFTER THE EXPLOSION IN THE TUNNEL IN CENTRAL PARK THE CAMARA CUTS BACK TO THE CONEY ISLAND SCENE……YOU WILL LOOK ON THE UPPER RIGHT OF THE SCREEN IN THE OCEAN AND YOU’LL SEE A SHIP PASSING BY…..LOOK PAST THE SHIP TOWARDS THE HORIZON AND YOU’LL SEE IT HIT THE WATER…..THERES NO DOUBT WHAT I SAW REALLY HAPPEND BUT WHAT I WANNA KNOW IS HOW THE MONSTER GREW SO BIG IN THE UNDER A MONTH MAYBE EVEN THREE WEEKS ACCORDING TO WHEN IT WAS BETH AND ROB SLEPT TOGETHER (THANKS HUD LOL)…….CUZ IF IT WAS ALREADY BIG AND JUST CAME TO EARTH TO LAY ITS BABIES (THE CREATURES THAT FELL OFF ITS BODY) THEN WHY DID’NT ANYONE SEE A BIG SPLASH ESPECIALLY NOT THE PEOPLE ON THAT SHIP PASSING BY?????……….AND ANOTHER QUESTION……UP UNTIL THE DAY OF THE MOVIE BEING RELEASED, THE SITE 1-18-08.COM POSTED UP RANDOM PICTURES OF CLUES TO THE MOVIE…….AND THE LAST FEW PICTURES SHOW THAT IT IS MOST LIKELY DEAD, ONE PICTURE SHOWS A HUGE POOL OF BLOOD IN THE WATER AND ANOTHER PICTURE SHOWS CHUNKS OF WHAT COULD BE THE MONSTERS BODY WASHED UP ON THE BEACH……MAYBE IF THEY TOOK ENOUGH TIME TO TAKE ALL THESE PICTURES WITH POSSIBE ANSWERS THEY CAN MAKE A SEQUEL TO EXPLAIN MOREAND TO TIE UP LOOSE ENDS WITH AL THE CLOVERFIELD HATERS THAT NEED AN ANSWER SO BADLY
January 21st, 2008 at 11:19 am
I saw the movie Friday night. I though it was good not the greatest monster movie but what was the last monster movie we’ve had out. It’s definitely setup for a part 2. I personally think there were 2 monster’s because when it knocked the helicopter out of the sky how was it there to eat Hud so quickly. Also if there is an part 2 it wouldn’t make sense if it continues on the same camera that stretching it I was already amazed by the battery life on that thing anyway.
January 21st, 2008 at 11:23 am
Well, I think this movie is just the beginning of a new ‘franchise.’ JJ is not stupid and the genious of the movie’s marketing proved that. This guy is going to make another one (hopefully) from another POV - IMHO it should be a standard movie (normal camera please) and from the millitary / scientific point of view. DON’T give any explanations as to what it is - just have the events as they unfold and aftermath. We should see events and characters overlap…which would be cool.
This movie was set up as a “video” which is being shown to someone. Who is it? What will they do after seeing the video? THAT’s what part 2 should be about. JJ is smart. There will be more!
January 21st, 2008 at 11:42 am
Great flick. For those who were at the Slusho site, what do you make of the number 6? Seems to have some significance.
Also, JJ mentioned in an interview that this “monster” thing was conceived when he visited Japan and saw how big Godzilla still is there. He thought it would be cool if America had a “monster” too. So I believe this is the beginning of Cloverfield, not the end. In order for his monster to become iconic, there has to be lots of exposure (movies, cartoons, comics, mini series, toys, etc.)
More to come.
January 21st, 2008 at 12:06 pm
Saw it last night, I did see the splash at the end & the whole piece of the satellite theory makes sense to me. I find the whole viral marketing & clues to the tale very interesting & hope the story continues to unfold. I think I will see it again soon to stay through the credits & listen for the sound at the end. Overall it was a great film, people get so used to the way films are made these days that they wont accept anything else. OPEN YOUR MINDS PEOPLE! The hair on the back of my neck stood up when I felt that first tremor! I thought the comedy was a perfect addition to the wild ride!
Hud: “Well i’ve got to talk about something otherwise im going to shit my pants in this stairwell!” ahaha
January 21st, 2008 at 12:27 pm
OK, Did you notice that there was more than one monster…I mean there were other big ones too…The part where the fighter planes flew over Central Park while they were all on the grass…The guy with the cam looks up and gets chewed….That was a hint that there was another large creature…Also watch the fil again…You will notice two different looking monsters….The one in central park had a different appearence…sequel definatley to follow…cool pic
January 21st, 2008 at 12:33 pm
Does anyone know where we can see the sonar pictures of the creature heading for Manhattan that came from being registered to the Slusho web site?
January 21st, 2008 at 2:10 pm
i am thnking that the monster came from space as sum sort of parasite it hit the bottom of the ocean and feed off that ingredient in slusho and if you read on the slusho website you can see it says its gna make you as big as a whale.. then i thnk he comes up to the surface to feed on people that have been drinking slusho idk possible theory
January 21st, 2008 at 4:08 pm
found a pic of the “splash” very right side of the screen

January 21st, 2008 at 5:40 pm
loved this movie, amazing
at first i thought there were 2 monsters because i thought they looked different, and because the fighters flew over them towards the city while they were in the field, but the second time watching i noticed that you could here multiple explosions in the background after the fighters fly over and before the monster appears on screen to eat Hud, so i assume it was being bombed off screen still and they just didn’t notice, also when you see the monster in that scene, your only seeing half of it, it seems to have multiple smaller arms and a long tail which you only get a glimpse of as he pans the camera up towards it. It seems logical that the egg falling from the sky could explain the monster, but it doesn’t explain the monster having foreign parasites if it grew from an egg, so many unanswered questions, sooo amazing. i think my favorite part is when their getting in the helicopter, Hud looks over to show us a M109 Paladin howitzer, and the guy scurries to get into the turret just as the monsters foot comes down crushing it into the ground, awesome. I was kind of annoyed that the monster went unfazed by such a significant amount of firepower, i was really hoping the B2 took it out, well at least their is always the MOAB, GBU-28, and nuclear weapons, surely something could punch a hole in it. I’d like some further explanation via the internet, or another film, but i think what makes this movie great is how it was filmed and the lack and details beyond what you see on the tape
January 21st, 2008 at 7:30 pm
I did notice that there were two different monsters.. one of them did look as if to have features of a whale only with the attachment of extra arms and legs, and the other one, the one Hud saw hiding behind buildings, when the statue was destroyed, that was the other one
January 21st, 2008 at 7:34 pm
so.. one was a giant crab, and the other was a giant whale.. haha very funny.. you might be able to notice that they do have features of underwater animals
January 21st, 2008 at 9:05 pm
okay for all of you explaining the name… the name is a street in LA.. thats what it is.. its a code name for the movie.. and it stuck.. but it has no amazing meaning.. its just a street in LA.. thats it…
January 21st, 2008 at 10:05 pm
There is a video available on the internet that the creators made available on the internet the week the movie came out… it shows a news story about an oil rig collapsing (appearing to be sucked underwater), which would imply that the creature was definitely the result of that “egg” dropping into the water. That must have been when it hatched. LOVED this movie.
January 21st, 2008 at 11:06 pm
It’s common for American audiences to always look for rationality and logic in these type of films. Then again, this is one of the first few films to feature a first-person perspective for the YouTube generation, and those who grew up on “Creature Feature Saturdays” back in the day just don’t get it! I’m in my 40’s, but I understood the premise of what was trying to be achieved in the film by taking this approach. I’ve been watching “kaiju films” for years and Japanese filmmakers always focused on the common people affected by these behemoths trampling upon our civilizations. American films always have some authoritarian perspective guiding the plot by either scientists or the military. This approach was a breath of fresh air for the giant monster movie genre, hopefully more films of this type will become prevalent again.
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:34 am
Rolando, the SLUSHO website tells you how the drink’s ingredient deapsea necter, can make you “Big as a whale” and found at the bottom of the ocean. Clovey, found it and obviously fed on it to make it huge, and perhaps the lack of it once it got disturbed from the drilling station, made it get withdrawal or something, thus making it angry and it went to the closest land (NYC). The “babies” as you call them, are not its babies, they are parasites that fed off of it while under the water as well, and because they chose to feed off of Clovey, they got a boost to their growth too from its blood. They could have been typical flealike crabs, but now due to the hyperfed Deapsea Necter alien, they got big too and just followed along for the ride when it came ashore.
January 22nd, 2008 at 8:44 am
Cloverfield lived up to my expectations as it was a highly anticipated movie on my behalf, and as a self proclaimed movie critic for i collect movies and have seen thousands, i would rate this movie as one of the best monster movies ever. it brings a real sense of actuality into perspective. However, i am hopeful for a sequel, and not a quick cheap one that brings down the first one either. I think that a sequel taking place in D.C. would be spectacular. It follows the storyline as it is within walking distance of the monster and it includes so many images and statues that are emotional to people, such as the white house. not to mention the urgency of protecting our own capital. How great would the ending be if you see the president being evacuated and barely escaping while the military drops a nuke, destroying our capital, just to save the rest of us….hopefully
January 22nd, 2008 at 3:33 pm
i did not see the egg drop in the water at the last scene. If there is a sequel it will be of another person at the same time filming the action.
January 22nd, 2008 at 4:11 pm
Saw the splash at the end of the movie. No doubt there will be a sequel. The people walking on the street covered in dust and the papers flying through the air looked a LOT like pictures from 9/11.
January 22nd, 2008 at 5:02 pm
i didnt see an egg.. and there was only one monster.. idiots. where the hell did you see a whale? or a crab? were you even watching the movie? sounds like you are making assumptions based on the stupid ass fan art images that everyone is mistaking for the monster. watch the movie first before you act like you know everything.
January 22nd, 2008 at 7:25 pm
I really hope they don’t keep the monster alive, or move onto another monster or something else.
Sorry, if the thing can be hurt by bullets and was obviously scared and damaged when it was bombed….I reallly doubt any natural being, flesh bases, carbon based, can withstand a nuclear blast.
If the creature is that powerful, the really there is no point in watching as it would just win all the time.
Movie was entertaining, but sadly characters written at 13 year levels. It was like Friday the 13th characters. That’s fine, i mean they had to create conflict, but couldn’t it have been just them getting past monster. Lame bit about love of life bit, frankly I’ve seen people dump eachother for the slightest reason, I really doubt any human would go back in such a situation.
January 23rd, 2008 at 4:52 pm
So, Robert, I guess you feel Godzilla movies are beyond belief in their genre as well being that Godzilla is attacked heavily in every film and druing those fights doesn’t even flinch at bombs, tanks, massive electric beams, lasers, not to mention all the various attacks from the other monsters.
Like JJ said, he wanted to have a U.S. version of what the Godzilla franchise was to Japan. And so, you have to be able to let in a very large degree of suspension of disbelief to enjoy a popcorn rollercoaster movie experience. It was never meant to be analyzed to the minutia it has been. It was meant to be enjoyed and hopefully cheered on as something just as indestructible as Big-G. Even when Godzilla gets “defeated” it returns badder than ever to destroy (yet again) Tokyo.
Based on the negative responses to NYC being destroyed, should the Japanese not have destroyed Tokyo in EVERY one of their movies?? It is the same. So start thinking of it in that same light. And enjoy it fro what it is. A new monster for a new mellenium and something to call our own in America.
January 23rd, 2008 at 6:43 pm
First off I would like to say that I have been following the 1-18-08 phenomenon from when it first began, as far back as before the trailer that appeared at the beginning of Beowulf. I am sure that a lot of you have been following this long as well. I am a Cinema Major and live for films like this. I went to opening night still with many unanswered questions. As I left the cinema I felt as if a lot of those questions were unanswered. I am not saying this was a bad film by any means but I just felt as if I had taken all of this time and effort to get everything I could out of it and still left without knowing. After seeing the film and reading discussion boards such as this one I can get a better grasp on things but I was let down by this. It seems like in the end there is no real explanation of “the splash”, the monster (or monsters), the connection with SLUSHO, the satellites, etc. The film was very bland on giving us the answers that we have been so eager to find out. All and all it was still fun the whole way along and still is fun isnt it? I can’t believe a movie can stir up this much hype and gossip. It is unreal. Great job to the marketing department of this film and everyone invloved. If anyone has a good website that helps to answer the questions of this film please post it and lets keep this thing going. Though I was let down a little by this film it really was fun and I think I will go see it again this weekend and try to piece together some more of the Cloverfield puzzle. Take care everyone! -Billy

I think the sequel should be the exact same movie, but from the perspective of the United States military. Do you recall when they went into the mall through the subway and ran into all of the soldiers. Did you notice they all had cameras on their helmets. This movie had the best military engagement scenes I have ever seen in film, far better than Independence Day, and was much more serious and dramatic. If the sequel tells the same story from the Military’s point of view, we would get some much needed answers, like what does the bites from these creatures do to humans, and did Marina explode or was she killed. Also, I think it would be kick ass to see extended footage of the military engaging the creature and to see the nuke hit the creature and destroy New York. I think that would be an even bigger hit.

Robert Said:
“I really hope they don’t keep the monster alive, or move onto another monster or something else.
Sorry, if the thing can be hurt by bullets and was obviously scared and damaged when it was bombed….I reallly doubt any natural being, flesh bases, carbon based, can withstand a nuclear blast.
If the creature is that powerful, the really there is no point in watching as it would just win all the time.”
I agree with this. Obviously whatever the stealth bomber hit this thing with that knocked him down really hurt. So it is hard to imagine that this thing could withstand a thermal nuclear blast. Also, it is clear that bullets killed the smaller ones that fell off of this things body, hence the one the military had in the plastic box, so it strains the imagination to think that a nuke would not kill this thing. I am a fan of the literary tool of “Suspense of Disbelief,†but only when logical and consistent. The fact that the stealth bomber hurt it, and a nuke didn’t is inconsistent. I was disappointed to learn that the creature survived, which would make any sequel stupid. I say again, a better sequel would be to tell the same story from the military’s perspective.

Cloverfield
#1 - The nickname given to Manhattan after it’s mass destruction.
#2 - The “monster†is actually a result of Japanese biological warfare tests that were covertly conducted in space as reported by the privately owned Tagruato Satellite called ‘Project Slusho’.
Future documentaries will explore the origin of Project Slusho, the nature of the experiments performed, the Cloverfield virus, and the fate of the entire North America continent.”
The only problem I have with this is re-entry into Earth’s Atmosphere. I do not believe an egg would survive those temperatures. If this thing is extraterrestrial, then fine. If this thing is an earth creature that has been genetically altered into something else, then it is still subject to the physical reality of earth in that re-entry should have fried this thing, and the nuclear blast would have ended its rampage. Sorry, I don’t buy this one. Do the Japanese even have a space program?
