I have to think that the reason that Alvin is doing so well is the total lack of kids films this Christmas season. What has been released this season for kids? Golden Compass? Not for the under 10 crowd. Bee Movie was released the first week of Nov and is out of the theaters already. They should have held onto it a little longer. If only they would have saved some of those kid movies from this crowded summer. I took my boys to National Treasure and we have nothing else to see. Everything else is rated R or not any good.

@Orange,
Yeah, I am really perplexed by journalists' trendy new outlook that There Will Be Blood can only play metropolitan screens and that its box office prospects are dire. You know, a damn good movie is a damn good movie, and while a lot of adults don't have the time or patience to dig a meditational art flick, There Will Be Blood is a lot more than that. It's simply great cinema.

Boogie Nights has a huge following, it's not even a cult film, while Magnolia is a big cult favorite. Anderson isn't some no-name director. Promote the film like crazy and say it's important. And journalists, stop even saying that this film can't play red states and all of that snobbery. Why even make films if you're not going to play them for as big an audience as possible? Have a little faith. There Wil Be Blood is not Days of Heaven, it's easier to sell.

@anonymous,
Alvin's performance is pretty nuts. But it's strange how this is a long lasting famous franchise but you don't hear about it anymore except at Christmas. I mean, at one point Alvin & CC was as ubiqutous as Transformers or GI Joe. I've read that the film actually isn't horrible. Anyone seen it? I wasn't mad at this film like Garfield. However, my respect for David Cross has finally diminished.

Did I read that correct: there will be blood did 155 thou at two locations?!?! Imagine what a properly marketed and released campaign would have accomplished? Its very frustrating to think that poor PR, release management, etc could hurt this films chances of reaching the masses. Very fuking frustrating. If Lewis doesnt get an Oscar nod, it will be downright infuriating!

Is anyone else just completely shocked by how well Alvin & The Chipmunks is doing? It looked absolutely horrible and got terrible reviews. I just didn't think it had the appeal to be very successful, especially with so many other family movies to choose from. I thought it would be out of theatres in two weeks, tops.
