2007: The Cinematic Year of Anton

Anton

Every year new names become popular. Cinemascopian points out that 2007 has had three films featuring lead characters with the unusual name of Anton:

  • Anton Ego, “Ratatouille”
  • Anton Corbijn, “Control”
  • Anton Chigurh, “No Country for Old Men”

I wonder if such a cinematic occurrence might eventually someday reflect in those popular baby name charts. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think Anton will replace Michael. I’m just wondering if Anton’s “stock” might go up due to the recent big screen appearances.

Isn't the young sailor in Sweeney Todd named Anton or Antony as well?

Day Watch main character is also named Anton.

Like frogbat mentioned already: nowhere does Cinemascopian state these Anton's are lead characters. Anton Corbijn is the director of Control. He plays no role in the movie and there's no character called Anton in it.

I'm just imagining a fourth grader named Anton during show and tell bringing in a copy of No Country For Old Men and say "this is who I'm named after."

anton isn't such an uncommon name - it's another version of anthony i think, In fact so common a related story bout the guy playing chekov is listed above.

    also, anton corbijn isn't a character's name it's the guy's real name - he's a photographer and director
  • Don't know 'bout Anton but I'm definitely considering changing my family name to Chigurh. Definitively The Word of the Year. That, and Plainview.

Thank you Peter for your continuing support of my blog.
  • I donno..youngsters nowadays don't seem even clever enough to name their children after people in cinema. I mean--look at the popularity of Juno-- and Bleeker? come on! I was on facebook today and came across a group that said, "If this group reaches 150,000, I will name my son Batman." With these trends, I sure do hope Anton gets picked up, or I will start feelin real bad for kindergarden teachers taking roll in the near future :)
