Posters: Drillbit Taylor and Hancock

Check out the new posters for Hancock and Drillbit Taylor after the jump.

IMPA has a look at the teaser poster for Will Smith’s super-anti-hero film Hancock, which hits theaters on July 2nd 2008. I like the concept, but featuring a city in his sun glasses might confuse some consumers as New York City played heavily in the marketing for I Am Legend.

JoBlo has a look at the poster for the upcoming Judd Apatow-produced comedy starring Owen Wilson, Drillbit Taylor. For various reasons, I really hate to criticize this film. But the trailer was incredibly weak, and the theatrical one-sheet doesn’t look any better. I’ll admit, I was wrong about Walk Hard. The horrible marketing had me convinced the film would be a stinker, but it ended up being a solid comedy. But sadly most of America was also turned off by the advertising, and the film fell hard at the box office, which is a shame. It might very well be the same case with Drillbit, but I have yet to see any indication of this.

    There’s no way I’d confuse “I Am Legend” with “Hancock” because, well… I’m not a moron. ;-)

of course you aren’t, you read /Film…:)

But I’m sure that more people than you think will be quick to draw comparisons.

The “Hancock” poster looks okay but I don’t like the slogan. I hope they’ve got better ideas in the pipe for later campaigns. As for “Drillbit Taylor”, I’m completely sold on the concept and I have faith in Apatow, can’t wait. :)

The simple fact that it’s Will Smith, NYC, and he looks bedraggled could lead someone to combining the two movies, I think.

I actually think the Hancock poster’s similarity to IAL is purposeful and smart. It will catch people’s attention and draw them in wondering why an IAL poster is circulating online/in the theater, and I think the glasses, the grizzle, and the raggedy beanie he’s wearing set it enough apart to not be mistaken - not to mention the Hancock logo’s appearance therein.

People don’t seem too jazzed on the recent trailer, but it caught me off guard. I quite liked it. Seeing a regular slacker pile into highway signs and throwing a whale - the sort of stuff we see in all comic trailers now, esp Ironman and Supes, kind of rips the exhausted genre out of its seat and laughs in its face. And I like that Hancock is an origianl character not out of a graphic novel. There is a lot of room here to parody comic book flicks in a way that an Epic Movie will never succeed at. And it’s great to see Will Smith not playing the likeable beefcake-type for a change. SFX look sick too.

And anyone who is saying “What’s that weird expression on his face” - I’d called that the expression of a mildly perturbed ubermensch.

As for Drillbit - that trailer that premiered a while back is obnoxious and the opposite of funny. Was the Rock busy? I don’t care who wrote it, nobody will go see this except desperate families.

The Drillbit poster looks like some bootleg you’d find on the streets of Hong Kong. And even worse, Wilson looks vacant.

The Hancock poster is a satire of the Spider-Man posters. The sunglasses are reflecting the city, like Spidey’s eyes. They’re the same color, to boot. Check it out: http://www.impawards.com/2002/spiderman_ver2.html

What was wrong with the Walk Hard marketing exactly?

I like the Drillbit poster. At the very least, it thankfully avoids the bold red lettering that every comedy since Wedding Crashers has adopted. I also like the trailer, though it remains to be seen how much of the movie is Owen + the kids vs. The Kids + Owen (prefer the former to the latter).

Modern movie posters suck most of the time. I miss when they would do cool artwork or symbolic shots to showcase a film in a printed poster.

    Those 2 suck.
