I think it is important to note that previous to Iron Man, or maybe Ghost Rider?, Marvel Entertainment did not have complete and total control over the movies made from their material. This is no longer the case, Marvel is now the sole production and money behind these films. The studios are simply the distribution channel. So Marvel's head is on the line now and they are totally responsible for getting these things to the screen.

Ang Lee's Hulk, even though I personally enjoyed most of it, was the final straw that moved Marvel towards that goal. Its just taken awhile for the content to make it to the screen and the studio library to be used up.

I think Avi and company took Lee's Hulk personally, they really thought his take would be just what the character needed. And when it failed they were personally taken aback. That's what I hear anyway.

I am getting so tired of the reboots, I mean, Ang's Hulk was released in 2003, Punisher in 04 - and it isn't like it's a different company making it - its Marvel. The same flashy comic book opening will play before the reboots as in the ones from 3-4 years ago. DC is just as guilty.

Its like look, stop pushing the films out if you are not 100% sure they are exactly what you want them to be. People will understand if you want to wait. The Fantastic four may not be the best flick, but they waited just long enough to make it look real enough to enjoy. Same with Spiderman.

So they made some flicks people didn't enjoy. Thats the glory of a sequel. Yeah, new actor, new director - but heres the thing, new story line - we get to see more of the depth of the charicter, not more of the same over and over. This will make the 3rd origins story of the punisher and counting the TV show and bad movies, like 5th reboot of the Hulk. Granted Punisher is going the MAX story line, and Hulk is starting off at least somewhat where the last left off - they are still going at it like a complete reboot.

It just makes me mad. Ugh. See what you did, you made me go on a rant! - At least Norton is a fanboy and this "reboot" should be more to the core Hulk fan base. Now the question looms, is Norton in for the long haul, will he stick around for say 2 more movies to end the saga of the Hulk?

Can you imagine if that chair was in your dentist's office? Damn.

I think for additional separation from the first film - which I think was an interesting failure - they should have called him David Banner à la the TV series.

@jager,

Man, I thought it was just me. Wasn't RDJr. wearing a wife beater in his first still as well? Also, they have the same facial hair going on, and the same half-nerd-half-cunning look in their eyes. Good catch.

@Monkey,

I'd rather see the Crank directors direct the new Hulk over the director of the Transporter films, who is directing this reboot. There are other directors I'd love to take helm of this, but in the case of the better Jason Statham director(s), I go Crank. (I actually dug Crank, as it's the closest thing to a cocaine rush/adderoll binge on film I've ever seen, in a good way not related to Don Simpson).

I think the marketing dept.s for this and Punisher have their jobs cut out for them. The prior films were huge disappointments in the popular eye, and it's not like those were forgotten in the few years since (a la a decade for Dolph Lundgren's Punisher). It will be much harder to sell these films as Event Films now - not to fanboys but to adults/non-fans who wanted good summer blockbuster entertainment the first go around. So, again, Ed Norton in a wife beater is not the greatest way to say off the bat that "this movie is going to kick ass." And that Hulk image above is an illustration being passed for the film version - which is very odd. I'd put up a five second "glimpse" online of the new Hulk breaking through a glass door or something. Unlike Dark Knight, the studio needs to ramp up their marketing early for this one, but it's the latest of next year's comic/fantasy films.

I actually walked out of the first Ang Lee version. Not because I completely loathed it, but because I was starting to go blind from all of the moving frames flying across the movie screen and still had to drive myself home.

Coincidently, was the first time I ever watched a movie and felt old, as everyone else I knew seemed quite able to keep up and take in the action going on in the multi-panels just fine.

It is an origin story. This and Punisher are both reboots. I don't think the Ang Lee Hulk or the Thomas Jane Punisher where bad movies, I just think Marvel, and many of the fans, see them as a little too far away from the core of what the characters are.

The Ang Lee Hulk was a good movie, with some really good performances, but it didn't have the "Hulk Smash!" feel that many people wanted/expected. This is meant to be more geared toward that crowd, who are mostly open, if not enthusiastic, about retelling the origin.

I'd love to see some of the different Hulk personality types in here. I'm a big Gray Hulk fan, and the more recent smart Green Hulk has been pretty good. It would be like what they are doing with the different Iron Man armors in his movie. It's entertaining for fanboys and lucrative for the toy manufacturers and fast food tie in people. You could also get some plot advancement while still giving Hulk some screen time.

As for the comment about Crank, I disagree. Watching that movie felt like watching an experimental film made from a series of napkin notes. If you listen to the commentary, you will see that is exactly what it was. I enjoyed the movie, but I think Hulk needs a little more character development/empathy building. Not as much as in the last movie, where that was almost all you got, but some.

I just wonder if they're going to market this as an origins story, because we've already seen that movie and it's going to confuse the hell out of people. Releasing these first stills expresses that's the direction.

They almost have to do a "greener, bigger, meaner" campaign to make it work - it's a lot different than relaunching a Batman franchise and Hulk is arguably a less appealing character. A lot of the film's success will come down to how badass the fights with Abomination are - Ed Norton's never done the blockbuster thing and a lot of his fans are not neccessarily fanboys. And the director is pretty much a no-name. Should have been the Crank directors, rather than the Transporter dude.

I hope this movie doesn't suck. And I actually enjoyed the Ang Lee version, not as much as I wanted to, but I certainly don't think it deserves the anger it has gotten. But I am looking forward to this one, now that Marvel controls its own material it'll be interesting to see how they do with Iron Man and then this. They have no one else to blame now.
