Grindhouse is one of my favorite movies of 2007 (list hopefully upcoming) but have yet to buy Planet Terror or Death Proof on DVD. Because like most fans, I envisioned the experience as a double header, and don’t want to get screwed with a couple single releases. Well the expected super duper special edition box set is about to come out on March 21st 2008… in Japan.
I found the six disc box set on Amazon.jp for 9.975 yen, which roughly translates into $65 American before shipping. No/All Region DVD player required. Box art isn’t available yet, the poster to the right was a Japanese one-sheet.
Here is the information on what is included in the set:
Disc 1: Death Proof (Extended Film)
-English DTS, English DD, Japanese dub
-Japanese subtitles
-Japanese Theatrical/TV trailers
-Staff/Cast Profiles (Text)
-What is Grindhouse? (Text)
Disc 2: Planet Terror (Extended Film)
-English DTS, English DD, Japanese dub
-Japanese Subtitles
-Rodriguez commentary
-International/Japanese trailers
-Staff/Cast Profiles (Text)
-What is Grindhouse? (Text)

-Staff/Cast comments

From what I understand, everything on the deluxe digipak case-release will be in English. No Japanese narration or dubbing. Everything is sure to be subtitled in Japanese, although I’m unsure if this will removable in the subtitle options. Anyone interested in this release, be warned: the menus will be in Japanese only, and the discs will not be playable in Region 1 players.

why are they getting this great box set in Japan and we don’t have a full out english version of it here?

Sonny Chiba gets what Sonny Chiba wants.

Not fair man… not fair.

This is why dvd regions should be eliminated. I’d rather buy the 6 disc japanese version than the US release of Grindhouse. The Weinstein Company handled Grindhouse (in the states) poorly from the beginning.
I’d be nice to see this released. At least the 191 minute theatrical cut.

I hate this. Then again…I haven’t even seen the full version.

am i missing something here or are the faux trailers not included anywhere?
January 1st, 2008 at 5:14 pm
If the 191 theatrical cut doesn’t have the faux trailers, if I recall they’re in that cut, than I’m not sure where else it would be here.

i’m all for the 6 disk release, however, the product details state that the film is dubbed with subtitles?!? there’s no way i’d be watching a Tarantino dubbed in Japanese! i want to know if the dubbing and subtitles can be removed before i order it?

I went on the japenese amazon and figured out the price and everything, but i couldnt figure out if the dvd would work on european reigon 2, it was a bit unclear. does anyone know?

Japan and Europe are both region 2, so people in Europe and the UK can play the Japanese disks on regular DVD players.

Doesn’t seem fair that they get a 6 disc set and we don’t!!! But,the fake trailers aren’t included,so that’s kind of a rip-off,right? Why not have the whole package??? Probably couldn’t get the rights to them,I guess..I was wondering, when the HELL is Kill Bill:The Whole Bloody Affair going to be released????

I live in Canada and I got the 6-disc edition two days ago. After reading some of the comments here, I thought I should clear a few things up as it seems there are many people who have misconceptions about both this box set and Japanese DVDs of American movies.
Disc 5: The Theatrical Cut: yes the fake trailers and intermission adds are on here. The only one missing is Hobo With A Shotgun which didn`t surprise me since it mostly only played here in Canada and some parts of the U.S.
Japanese DVDs of American and other foreign movies: they make their foreign language DVDs the same way we do. You can turn off the subtitles and listen to the original language track(in this case English). You don’t have to be able to read the setup menu, just use the audio and subtitle buttons on your remote.
Do you need a multi-region player since it’s R2? No. Most or at least many R1 DVD players have simple region hacks that use your remote. Go to videohelp dot com, click on DVD Hacks and find your brand and model number to see if there is a hack.
Mine for example is: open tray, press 789 OK and then 0 for region-free or 2 for R2 or whatever. That’s it. Simple. You can set it back to R1 anytime(though I don’t know why anyone would want to) by pressing 1 instead 0.
I hope that helps a bit.
As you may have seen on other websites like Amazon Japan, the discs look like 45s records and the box looks like an old beat up piece of crap which makes it a super cool set that is absolutely worth owning.
