Cloverfield actually looks like it has a good plot. The reason- It designates about 15 minutes beforehand to introduce the characters before going into monster-madness. The plot is becoming clearer, Beth's apartment was damaged (understatement) and Rob and friends go to rescue her.

From the looks of it, the movie is insane. And you can't deny it was inspired by 9/11! The same way Godzilla rose from Hiroshima and Nagasaki's ashes.

I agree Big Daddy. The success of the previous Godzilla movies was not because little Roshiko was torn between a Mother with a drinking problem and his love of poetry taking him off to boarding school. All the while struggling with his feelings of inadequecy living up to the goals of his father. It was because Godzilla blows radioactive crap out of his mouth and gigantic space monsters destroyed things.....and that is where the American Godzilla failed.

the problem with the american godzilla movie was they were too busy trying to please the mike andrews out there with a flucking plot. if they had tossed the plot and just provided carnage and destruction, and a kickass godzilla, then it would have been a better movie

the monster is going to look like a big fake digital monster. just like godzilla did. These movies usually suck because everyone wants to know wat the monster looks like. and than when they find out wat it looks like thats it. Usually these movies lack a plot.

that was whta i meant.
it´s not only the movie.
what is going on now, and what is gonna happen after the premiere....
and a date....we refer to what happened to the worlf trade center as a date (9/11)
and so we had to with this movie ((1/18/08) because there was no other way.
tha "marketing" for this movie is trying to go further....beyond the movie itself or the money.
tha's what i'm saying....
they're trying to produce a legend...a post modern tale.
and they are using the recurses like this realism...etc......

well. again sorry if it touches someone....
i' just want to see the movie i think its gonna be .....cool
hahaha
well....be happy all of you :)

January 18th was the same day that plans were put in place for the World Trade Center. Kinda think they really are getting into that whole 9/11 thing.
Also the same date as the Paris Peace conference. Not sure what has to do with monsters though...

I just have to say a few things after reading this. I personally like the way this movie is being presented it's a great marketing trick which is hardly used. Also, all of this 9/11 crap: Yes, they are relating 9/11 to skyscrapers falling and all of the terror. But also, it's been happening for a long time. They are trying to get people's anxieties and give you that realistic feeling. This wouldn't be any different if it was the same movie (in script and theory, not special effects) 20 years ago and it (the monster thing) was engineered by the commies and let loose on America, because people feared the communists invading then and it would scare the crap out of people. For instance, if you have watched Red Dawn, in my opinion it's a cheesy flick, it's totally realistic in some ways and so unbelievably farfetched in others, and actually funny to watch, but when it came out it freaked some people out like I'm sure this movie will. That's the idea and if you honestly can't handle it because it's too close to 9/11 and too real DON'T watch the movie. Simple as that. I do understand you have an opinion about this movie but many people like the idea and direction with where it's going on this site so don't come here and complain because we generally like this movie.

I really couldn't give a flying fuck about the people going on about how it's going to be overhyped or that it's too related to 9/11.

First off, if this movie is overhyped then how come BARELY any channels are covering the movie? Aside from the three different TV spots, I haven't seen jack SHIT about this movie like in interviews.

I respect this movie because it's attempting to do one thing:

Keep it's plot unknown.

Movie's suck these days because they're too predictable, too unoriginal and lacking just a plain wow factor. Superbad sucked for this reason too and while I have respect for Seth Rogen and his acting in The 40 Year Old Virgin, Superbad was really fucking stupid.

The writing for movies since 2006 has taken a bit of a decline. So right now, we're in a period where flashy/gimmick movies are the only ones proving to be GOOD. Transformers was one of those and I personally loved it.

All you guys can go be critical and ruin your experience. I personally will be seeing this opening day and I look forward to a movie unlike any other. From the perspective of a sci-fi/horror/thriller fan, this movie looks like it'll be a nice refresher of "Best on the Big Screen" movies.

@big daddy
I think what vicente is trying to express is that by signifying a specific date in ambiguous chalk along city sidewalks, the marketers of Cloverfield are alluding to the ever-presence of 09-11-01 in the popular consciousness. I hadn't even considered that connection, but I almost will.

@tucho manta
Calm down dude. Jesus. When even the director of Cloverfield accepts comparisons to 9/11 and says his film draws on the same anxieties and situational terror as that event, comparisons to 9/11 are relevant, responsible, and nearly obvious. If you don't believe me, I guess you'll believe Roger Ebert when his review comes out all across the world, or even possibly, in the numerous editorials that are written to explain why the film did not do as well as many thought it would (first reason will be that internet marketing still doesn't connect with a lot of movie goers and is too esoteric and 2) most theater goers will avoid terror-related films, even in sci-fi guise, just like they have with war films of all types in 2007.

if i undestand you correctly, what you are saying is that the marketing campaign is not only to promote the movie, but maybe a more expansive story, that will be presented it different forms of media, like tv, movies, cartoons, games, toys, and so on, therefore being a much bigger experience.

it was just an opinion then,
now its certain to me.

the fact that the movie was meant to be designated as a date (1-18-08) it' s a proof.
not only IN the film but in the ....marketing and all of this exitement, I believe it was very carefully planned.
All of this "pre-atmosphere"... i think this was meant to be related.
they are not only looking for many people to see the movie, not just $. they are trying to produce something bigger.

(my english is awful, i wish you can understand my point, at least)
