There Will Be Blood

IndieWire polled “106 leading North American film critics,” and they came up with the Top 100 Movies of 2007. Here is the top twenty films:

1. There Will Be Blood
2. Zodiac
3. No Country for Old Men
4. Syndromes and a Century
5. Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
6. I’m Not There
7. The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford
8. Colossal Youth
9. Killer of Sheep
10. Offside
11. Black Book
12. Once
13. The Diving Bell and the Butterfly
14. Eastern Promises
15. I Don’t Want to Sleep Alone
16. Regular Lovers
17. The Host
18. Southland Tales
19. Into the Wild
20. Ratatouille

While I do agree that Paul Thomas Anderson’s There Will Be Blood deserves its place near the top of the mountain, the rest of these choices and placements seem very questionable. Usually the films on a majority poll are somewhat predictable, but this listing is chaotic. I’m shocked that Juno (which was critically acclaimed) appears at #97 while Richard Kelly’s Southland Tales (which was trashed by both critics and moviegoers) ranks at #18. Ratatouille which was the best reviewed Hollywood movie of the year is ranked at #20?! Yet Syndromes and a Century is ranked #4?! I’ve been covering all the critic association awards, and the top critic’s top 10 lists, and have never seen a mention of Syndromes and a Century.

how can critics and the like be seriously adding killer of sheep to any list? the dvd came out this year, that’s all…

    elk!!! ilk!!!!

I can see why you’re confused. It wasn’t a poll of “106 leading film critics.”

It was a poll of a 106-year-old leading film critic.

  4. Gravatar

    I agree with this list.

How did i know u were gonna bitch about the absence of juno?

It’s nice to see ZODIAC and JESSE JAMES getting some love at least. IMO, Fincher’s ZODIAC was the best movie I’ve seen all year, and of course, all the awards-snobs will all forget about it.

might wanna rethink the menatality that this list is flawed because is has syndromes & a century @ 4 peter…heaven forbid we have a list that varies from the same fucking cookie cutter list that EVERY other web-moviepage in existence has. Beware of those damn free thinking hippies at indiewire!! Beware!!!!

Orange Cinema-rock on with your bad self!

Granted there are movies on there I have not heard of, but do agree with many of their choices. I said it before, Juno is a wad of bubble gum among steak dinners. It might be fun, and sweet, and cute, but it’s flavor will not last, nor will it sustain you.

    well, Grindhouse was pretty bad…

I totally agree with Scar’s comment. How could “Ratatouille” make it on the list? How? Where’s “Juno” and “Lars and the Real Girl”? I’m glad “Once” is there though. Very questionable list, indeed.

28 Weeks later was F$#KING TERRIBLE!!! And don’t get me started on Grindhouse.

  13. Gravatar

Scar, what in the fuck are you thinking with choices like 300 and 28 Weeks Later? Zodiac is leagues better than both those combined, so quit your pathetic whining.

  14. Gravatar

The Bourne Ultimatum?? American Gangster? WTF?????

  15. Gravatar

allright bitches ….since you ganged up ….here is what I think….before you criticize anything or any film….try to make your masterpiece….see what happens….

28 weeks later…it was a smart (sometime stupid) horror thriller….and I’m not even fan of the gener.

SEAN & ROBERT regarding 300, didn’t want to watch it at first….but ya know I read up on the technology that they used …gave it a shot…I got to tell ya…the CG concept that they used could revolutionary ….imagine all the film after braveheart or LOTR ….anyway, not whining…just expressing thoughts. have you got any?

I love fucking Fincher….I really wanted to love zodiac…I followed actual story for long time….when I heard it I was like holy cow….this could be very dark …fincher is the one can …..but ya know what….it was too fucking long…fell asleep twice…covering three fucking decades….over two hours….blah blah….you feel me dawwg?

    smart yet stupid, got it.
