Really Bad Posters For Really Bad Movies: Untraceable

Untraceable Posters

I haven’t seen Untraceable, but I have seen the trailer, and I feel like I’ve seen probably two minutes too much for this film. Yes, I am prejudging this flick, but at least I’m disclosing this fact upfront.

IMPA has two new posters for the Diane Lane/Colin Hanks FBI Hacking Thriller. You got to love it when the theatrical advertising is just as bad as the movie, and this seems to be a prime example. To think that Frequency director Gregory Hoblit has resorted to such a film disappoints me greatly. Thankfully, I’ll be at Sundance when this film comes out (not that Screen Gems will likely screen this “gem” for press). Check out the movie posters after the jump.

Official Plot Synopsis:

Within the FBI, there exists a division dedicated to investigating and prosecuting criminals on the internet.  Welcome to the front lines of the war on cybercrime, where Special Agent Jennifer Marsh (Diane Lane) has seen it all……until now. A tech-savvy internet predator is displaying his graphic murders on his own website – and the fate of each of his tormented captives is left in the hands of the public: the more hits his site gets, the faster his victims die.   When this game of cat and mouse becomes personal, Marsh and her team must race against the clock to track down this technical mastermind who is virtually untraceable.

Untraceable hits theaters on January 25th 2008.

Thats the crappiest poster that i have ever come across.
Any Photoshop user can make this in 30 min.

30 min is true, Guru, but then any Photoshop user could make the 'I love NY' logo (say) in less than a minute. Or the Nike swoosh. It's not how long it takes to make that determines how good a design is, it's more often how little time it needs to take in.

Not that I'm claiming that this one is any good - though the main fault to my eyes is the poor choice of photo on the second poster.

this is a classic case of the marketing agency either not being at all involved in the promo photoshoot, or failing to base their concepts on what material was available as opposed to what they hoped to achieve...

the first poster is little more than stock photography with a stupid tagline, the second is an absolute disgrace as im sure most readers would agree - enile is spot on, its a poor choice of photo but more worringly, its awful art direction - its an insult to marketing agencies across the world that this kind of crap gets signed off...let alone paid for

I agree that the posters suck, BUT I've heard good things about the movie actually and Diane Lane is cool!.
  • This reminds me of that "BLOCKBUSTER" movie Fear Dot Com. That movie made me want to punch myself with shoes...

You may not think much of the posters but the movie itself is fantastic and I cannot wait for it to premiere! Colin Hanks is amazing in it and Diane Lane is fantastic too. Like the old addage, "Don't judge a book by it's cover", don't judge a movie by it's poster.

If it was for a porno, I'd dig it. The mouse-glove is more sexual than the milk stache. And Diane Layne is a minx cougar.

So, what's so untraceable about this guy? I mean, if getting hits on his website kills people why not just contact his isp and have them disconnect him? How exactly would he be untraceable? Is he using some crazy technology that doesn't allow tracert? Or perhaps he is hosted by godaddy. Maybe if you call godaddy they'll be like, "sure we can take the site down. By the way, here's his address and phone number and the credit card he used to sign up." Or is he hosted in Sweden? You know how all those hackers just love Sweden. Do they have laws against murder in sweden?

Firstly, I don't hate either of these posters. The top one is pretty cool when you see it in person (which I did last night). The silver square is a mirror and it's kinda cool (or maybe I just like shiny things). Not in love with the second one, but come on, it's DIANE LANE, so I'm cool with it.

I've seen the film. Much better than FRACTURE and almost as good as Hoblitt's PRIMAL FEAR. Diane is great. Colin is great (kid's gonna be a star, just like daddy). Cool plot. Not nearly as cheesy as it seems, I promise.

This is a really good film. The questions that people are having as to HOW this sicko criminal is UNTRACEABLE are all answered very authenticaly in the film. I really enjoyed it.
