Cloverfield Video

The guys at BadRobot have devised a new viral plan, and have decided to launch a contest urging fans to embed a new video clip on their blogs and myspace profiles. The top 20 people whose widget is grabbed the most will win a prize. If you think about it, this is actually a very genius plan by the guys at BadRobot. Without spending a dime on advertising, they will get their footage embedded on thousands upon thousands of web pages. Talk about free viral advertising.

The new video clip, which can be watched below, features an introduction by JJ Abrams (it looks like he shot this inbetween takes on the set of Star Trek..) followed be an extremely extended sequence. Beginning with the monster’s first roar, the clip follows Rob and the gang up to the roof, down to the street where the statue of liberty’s head crashes, and into a store. If you’re not excited about this movie yet, watch this clip. After seeing Diary of the Dead at Toronto, I was worried that Cloverfield might feature a lot of the same, but with some cooler effects. By the look of this short clip, I am very wrong. Watch this sucker now!

Thanks to Dennis at CloverfieldClues for passing this on.

I saw this movie already…..on my tv on 9/11.

Seems, being as how the Godzilla franchise was based on our fears of atomic energy, Abrams is sort of relying on our fear of those “big, faceless, unstoppable” terrorists and sticking a nice and neat monster face on it all.

  2. Gravatar

Uptight, much? It’s a monster movie. Take it a face value. This isn’t high school English.

  3. Gravatar

I know what you mean, seeing the cloud of dust rolling down the street did make me think of 9/11 still we cant keep having to tip toe around that issue , its a film and a very good looking one at that.

  4. Gravatar

Can’t wait for this to be up and ready. I’m not going to win, but I sure will enjoy seeing how it turns out!

  5. Gravatar

Jerry, 9/11 and Cloverfield might have similar elements, but
Cloverfield is purly entertainment. If Abrams wanted to relate
    to 9/11, he would’ve made a documentary or something…

  6. Gravatar

When is this going live? “Tonight” is kind of vague … anyone know where it’s being hosted already, ‘illegally’ according to contest rules?

  7. Gravatar

Where do you get the code from? for the widget?

  8. Gravatar

The video is back online now

  9. Gravatar

I guess my point was…… just the way that a decade after we dropped the atom bomb on Japan, Godzilla sprang up as a sensation there because it spoke to a very real fear within the populace…

Abrams appears to be banking on the same thing happening here with us in a post 911 society. The visuals there are not accidental.

    That’s it.

  10. Gravatar

I just noticed something in this video…So I went and looked on other sites for larger size videos….if you slowly loop the shot of the monster in between the buildings it looks more like it’s foot rather than the whole monster. Crushing a building, and the “effect” of the legs walking is really it’s toenail surrounded by falling debris…Seriously…Think really BIG…focus between the movment of legs really slow and I promise you will see what is really a big black claw attatched to a big *bleep* foot.

  11. Gravatar

Well,we know now that that spoiler review was a hoax. This video just proved it.Good!!!!

  12. Gravatar

I think Craft is right about the foot thing. Maybe…. While it DOES look like a foot, why can’t anyone see the rest of the monster??

A great advertising campaign. Nothing beats word of mouth, and I have a feeling that this contest is going to spread word about Cloverfield FAST. I also have a feeling that someone who’s going to go see it in whatever town wins will spoil it for all of us.

More movies need to have trailers and mysteriousness like Cloverfield. It’s most certainly better than giving the whole film away in the trailer, I’m looking at you AVP2, and it’s built this film SO much more hype.

  13. Gravatar

“he new video clip, which can be watched below”
“If you’re not excited about this movie yet, watch this clip.”
    “Watch this sucker now!”

Someone really wants to win this contest eh? lol

  14. Gravatar

Krack: I’m just really excited about the film. Besides, As accredited press, we get to attend advanced screenings, so winning the contest wouldn’t do anything for us.

  15. Gravatar

Wow. I have to admit, this really ramps up my enthusiasm for this film.

  16. Gravatar

    “Avery Says:

Well,we know now that that spoiler review was a hoax. This video just proved it.Good!!!!”

    ;)

  17. Gravatar

to the people complaining about the clowd of dust rolling down the street because it looks too much like 9/11… how else are they supposed to depict it? That’s what happens when a large building gets knocked over instead of imploded. People may as well say “from 9/11 on, no more large buildings can be knocked over in any movie”

  18. Gravatar

The point was, once more, that there is clearly subtle psychological intent there. Which is fine………..about time someone in pop culture tries to capitalize off of what happened on 9/11.

  19. Gravatar

9/11 was a terrible time in our history, and we should not take it so lightly, movies like cloverfield are making the terrorist win. cloverfield supports osama bin laden.. jj abrams eats babies…. buildings falling down are trying to make nuclear bombs… dust clouds are selling enriched uranium… i think you get the point

  20. Gravatar

i like to feel fear, its fun when its a movie, thats why i like cloverfield, and thats why i try not to think alot about 9/11, cuz 9/11 is real fear. bringing up 9/11 is just a cheap way to get attention.. lets just end it there

  21. Gravatar

I think that this film is just trying to teach us to not mess with mother nature!!To wake us up before it’s too late.To stop war,and the destruction of our world. It plays on our fears of terrorists and disasters ,so soon after 9/11.It’s just like how the original “Godzilla”played off the fears of the Japanese so soon after the bombings. This is meant to be our “Godzilla”.

  22. Gravatar

Leave 9/11 thoughts in your minds and hearts…..I’m a little tired of the subjects ability to be mentioned in almost every single non related topic. I need a break from it…even with all the time that’s passed. ty.

    Back to the subject :-)

You know us Americans..Gotta do it bigger..Gotta do it better..

This Monster is going to be like Zilla’s much bigger, more *bleep* off cousin from the ‘West side’. After looking at more shots of video I’m convinced I was right in my previous comment. I was wrong about the view though. It’s a side view, not front…the beast is walking L to R, through the group of buildings and out of the shot.

This is strictly my opinion, but I REALLY think i’m right. I hope so.

  23. Gravatar

cool, i wonder how much of it will be in real time like this…

  24. Gravatar

all of it fanboy, thats what they say

  25. Gravatar

Well, any doubts I had about this are completely washed away. HOOOOLY FUUUU*K!! Got chills watching it on a little pop-up window. I can only imagine what it’s gonna be like in the theater.

  26. Gravatar

I haven’t been this excited to see a movie since I was a kid! January can’t get here soon enough!

  27. Gravatar

This looks like the movie that Godzilla ‘98 SHOULD have been.

    Can’t f–kin’ WAIT!!!

  28. Gravatar

Isn’t the head of the stature of Liberty like 3 times the size as portrayed in the clip?

  29. Gravatar

isn’t the actual size of the head of the stue of liberty like 3 times the size of that puny thing rolling in the street?

  30. Gravatar

Fuck you people and your 9/11 post generation and how it feels it was all a conspirecy get over it, it was 6 fucking years ago

  31. Gravatar

the way the guy in the end says ”i saw it rob i saw it it’s alive” kinda tells me it’s somthing rob has been researching or knows about.and he told his friend about it and thats how the friend knows what it is.so it’s probly some mythical creature

  32. Gravatar

hey guys….really check out the head of the statue of liberty….notice all of the small ring scars on her head…obviously our lady liberty took a giant tantacle to the face….a tentacle of a GIANT SQUID!! if its a giant quid or any type of friggin mutation of a giant squid I will be greatly disapointed….giant squid movies are played out simply because of the fact that they might actually be out there…and I want to see something a little bit more sci-fi than that….again when a giant squid hooks their pray with tentacles, it leaves suction hole marks on the flesh! what do you guys think?

  33. Gravatar

EVERYONE who wants to see the monster go to

    http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/cloverfield/large.html

And when the soldiers are shooting at sumthin and it pans to the 2 at the garbage can pause use your arrow keys to go frame buy frame to the next clip which is the buildings falling and once you get a clear pic you will see the monster very clearly its green in between the buildings

  34. Gravatar

I remember seeing a video on 9/11 of someone watching the cloud roll toward them, and then go inside to see the clouds cover the window. This was done on purpose, for sure.

I have nothing wrong with this fact, however, as just this few minutes of trailer has given me the chills. The good kind. The kind that warns you of nightmares.

  35. Gravatar

um… Jerry be quiet. This visual style is largely used for realism, not EVERYTHNG is a comment on America lol. You have not even seen the movie to judge what it is a comment on. Is imen on black a comment on terrorismn.,, NO. Is ever movie that america was attacked by “ANYTHNG” a comment on 9/11 NO. But man how much does this trailer make you want to see this!! drool… man …subtle psychological intent on a few minute trailer with a monster… now who is the true monster?

  36. Gravatar

Jerry the “always right hater, BLOGGER FROM HELL” muhaha. Now that’s a movie i would be scared to see.

  37. Gravatar

could we please stop blowing up cities, blow up the suburbs, or maybe a rural town, how about a reactor meltdown in wyoming? or stop blowing things up for a while write a story about growing cities and how much fun they are when the populous is not running down the street screeming.

  38. Gravatar

Im with nyc resident. independence day and godzilla was already done, redoing those movies mimicking 9/11 footage is not cool nor creative.

  39. Gravatar

Is noone curious about the screaming mutating woman in the Tent? Think Carpenter not Lovecraft. You humans and your guns.

  40. Gravatar

i think we are done talking about the similarities with what happened to the wtc. it was terrible and all, but please, move on. We cant stop making movies with dust clouds and falling buildings just because you people are going to bitchmoan about it. if you dont like it, dont watch it, get on with your life, quit wasting your time and saying this movie isnt cool, because guess what? I like it, and i dont want to hear it (read it) anymore. They took the towers out of certain movies out of respect for the victims and their families, but good god, it was years ago. Life goes on, and at the risk of sounding heartless, we cant all stop enjoying ourselves because some people will be reminded of that day.

  41. Gravatar

and another thing, why in the son of a fluck would anyone want to make a movie about a giant monster attacking a suburb? maybe a scene, but not a whole movie. We want to see destruction and carnage, not a few houses here and there getting smashed. Its ridiculous to say that its been overdone, because thats like saying an action movie with explosions is overdone, or a pixar movie with 3d animation is overdone. Giant monsters belong in big cities, the bigger the better, and i cant think of a better city in america than new york. and from their prospective? cmon, thats gonna be great. I bet the japanese dont bitch about tokyo getting blown up in all their movies.

  42. Gravatar

…and its people like Big Daddy whom we can thank for having brain-numbing, mindless destruction being thought of as top entertainment. I mean heck, whats wrong with gratuitous, graphic depictions of ultra-violence anyways? The NRA, the presidential admministration, and right-wing religious nuts would say there is nothing wrong with that. I’d like to see a film that has a monster demolish Big Daddy’s house and proceeds to shit on it while slapping his mother. Now that’d be entertainment! Right?

  43. Gravatar

That was a stupid attack on Big Daddy. He was only stating the truth in what the majority of people enjoy. Most people are drawn to the animalistic destruction we see in these movies, thus making them hits. There are the few who enjoy intelligent movies, or even intelligently made movies, and i can say that i will be seeing this movie not for the destruction of NYC but for the way in the which the film was made and the suspense it may bring in its realism.

  44. Gravatar

its not a fucking metaphor about 9/11, like people were saying earlyer if he wanted to do something like that he would have made a movie about 9/11. its a monster movie that IS about a MONSTER.

and also big daddy was pretty much just saying what a monster movie should be like, big explosions, mindeless destriuction, thats teh way a monster movie should be anyway

  45. Gravatar

just to reply to “hmm”, who didnt get what i said like the rest of you did.. movies are fun, i never said i liked real violence.. i like cinematic ultra violence as much as anyone else. and if a monster shit on my house while slapping my mother, i would think “i better record this, people are gonna wanna know how it all went down”

  46. Gravatar

awsome! I live in Brazil and I can’t wait to watch this.
    Some Kind of Monster!

    I’m gone!

  47. Gravatar

“hey guys….really check out the head of the statue of liberty….notice all of the small ring scars on her head…obviously our lady liberty took a giant tantacle to the face….a tentacle of a GIANT SQUID!! if its a giant quid or any type of friggin mutation of a giant squid I will be greatly disapointed….giant squid movies are played out simply because of the fact that they might actually be out there…and I want to see something a little bit more sci-fi than that….again when a giant squid hooks their pray with tentacles, it leaves suction hole marks on the flesh! what do you guys think?”

Well it seems that it came from the water on the posters and there is slashes in the Statue of Liberty… Rumor is, its Lovecraft’s Cthulhu.

  48. Gravatar

    rumor is, you’re an idiot

  49. Gravatar

So….Big daddy and everyone else gets all bent out of shape when Hmmm attacks his views, and then BG turns around and calls Jonathan an idiot…..nice, very classy.

  50. Gravatar

Sorry, that should have been BD, not BG.

I don’t care what the movie is supposed to or not supposed to represent. I LOVE these “doomsday” movies. And the simple fact that it is done the way it is (a la Blair Witch project) just creeps me out all the more. CAN’T WAIT!

  51. Gravatar

“hmm” didnt attack my views, “hmm” made a stupid comment, and no one agreed.. and im not classy, because a few months ago i was real patient with everyone, since no one knew what the movie was about, but today, less than a month away, we know so much, and we know for a fact what is false or debunked, but you get these idiots that still say that its a lion, or godzilla or cthulouoholoalou, or however you spell that. maybe i shouldnt be mean, but it was a stupid thing to say, and its not a view or opinion, its just a false statement. i normally respect other bloggers views… normally.. but an incorrect statement, with all the info on the internet, means the person is an idiot, or lazy, or both

  52. Gravatar

Well, regardless…i think we can ALL agree that this has generated so much BUZZ, but i hope we don’t get many more “sneak peeks” I agree with those who were saying maybe we have already been told too much.

I remember reading a blog a while back about past trailers that showed “too much” and basically ruined the movie. Some examples were the trailer for Castaway, Alien 3, and a few others I can’t remember. Even when the trailer for Beowulf came out, I said to myself, “I bet those are all the cool parts.” …and I was pretty much right.

Let’s hope the mystery remains and we are all blown away in January….not literally, of course…

  53. Gravatar

Gotta admit…I agree with big daddy.

  54. Gravatar

just to make it clear, the only thing that bends me out of shape is when someone says the monster is cthulu, godzilla, voltron, or a lion… i really have faith in this movie, i know im gonna love it, and when im there, i might even cry

  55. Gravatar

Yeha big daddy you’ll cry all right because while it may not be Voltron, It’s without a doubt a Ro-Beast, and Voltron will come in at the end of the film and slay it with his motherfucking Blazing Sword.

  56. Gravatar

i know you’re joking. but im all bent out of shape now

  57. Gravatar

I guess there must be something wrong with me because it never occurred to me (from seeing the commercial on TV) that there was some kind of 9/11-Terrorism connection until I stumbled into the comments here while looking for more information on the film.

Based on the POV of the movie my first thought was “This is the older cousin of ‘The Blair Witch Project’ ” and the only concern I had was are they actually going to show the “thing” or not?

I think what is interesting here is the power of what happens when something is left to the imagination in film. It still works so it seems. Many preview clips leave me with the impression that I’d already seen the best parts but this one quickly drew me in with the irony of feeling a “trapped claustrophobia” while being in a city as large as New York. Also when I realized that what appeared to be tossed liked a mutant Frisbee was the head of the Statue of Liberty that wigged me out. For an older-ster who saw the original Planet of the Apes in the theater as a kid, that shock of realization was the same rush as the “oh wow…” at end of the Apes picture.

Someone mentioned how AVP-R like others has already shown you everything you’re going to see in the trailers, albeit briefly. Those kind of movies may not be your cup of tea but for me, I’d like to have to wonder a little bit about what the Predator Alien hybrid is going to look like and what the scenario is but now if I go, I’ll be sitting there predicting when the next kill scene I saw in the trailer is going to happen.

Anyway, back to Cloverfield, leaving the unknown has made me more likely to go see this movie than I probably would have otherwise.

  58. Gravatar

I love reading these things, some people are so vicious towards each other…lol…I can’t help but giggle.

Anyway, I’m just hoping that this movie delivers. As far as ‘Giant monter movies’ go Toho’s Godzilla films set and still own the bar of measurement. I can’t recall Hollywood EVER putting out an ORIGINAL ‘Giant’ monster movie. I don’t include King Kong…it’s a big ape..big deal..They have movies with creatures, monsters and such but I’m talking Godzilla’esk…Big giant beasts or beast walking around and wreaking havoc. I think this is why so many people argue if this is just a re-make of something else..it’s kinda virgin territory for Hollywood.

I can’t wait to see how they do.

  59. Gravatar

Oh..and don’t bother pointing out Godzilla 1998..I said ‘original’. Never before seen.

  60. Gravatar

Red flags are going off; Blairwitch meets The Village meets Godzilla. A first person crappy camera shooting (blairwitch) with what seems like the main characters talking about whats going on without really engaging the monster much (The Village) and lastly a big scary monster destroying shit. I don’t mind remakes, but I do mind remakes of what looks to be the worst ideas rolled into one.

  61. Gravatar

    @ SMART PERSON

Have you written any scripts lately or had any of your ideas put trhough to production?

  62. Gravatar

Directed to: (self proclaimed) Smart Person…

Missed seeing the trailer? I know, it’s not like it’s all over the internet….Hey stupid….notice how most the shots and snipits from it don’t really have the feeling of ‘first person’ ie..inside the convience store, liberty’s head rolling down the street, shot of the explosion..ect…To me those shots feel more cinematic than handy cam…I don’t even notice.

BlairWitch bored me, never saw The Village. And If you think Godzilla is a stupid movie, Well that just means your talking out your ass because you don’t know the meaning behind them. Or, maybe you just think that the movies message about man’s negative impact on the enviorment and how were destroying our planet is trivial. The cheesy low budget style is part of the heritage, it’s expected.

I can only image what you think is a good movie…..

  63. Gravatar

see what happens, smart person, when you waste your time saying a movie sucks on a blog for people interested in the movie. if you really didnt care about it, you would move on, be you need attention so bad. get a girlfriend or something. you know this movie doesnt look bad, because if it did, it wouldnt be so popular.

  64. Gravatar

Retards. Are you going to think of 9/11 references each and every time a building is demolished? Give it a rest. We all suffered that day and carry deep and unhealed wounds.

This is entertainment. It uses special effects. When a building falls it creates a debri cloud. Buildings have been doing this long before 9/11. Shocking!!! Aircraft have been exploding into flames long before 9/11. Gravity has worked long before 9/11. Please tell me Sir Issac Newton was involved in the 9/11 plot. More importantly - monsters have been trashing cities long before 9/11.

Give it a rest and live life. Embrace this Lovecraftesque film and relax. 9/11 violated everyone of us.

  65. Gravatar

9/11 = old news. it was tragic yes, and a horrible day. but all you people who read 9/11 into every freaking thing are just keeping those terrorists legacy alive! STFU already about 9/11 and just enjoy a disaster movie.

or, extend your complaining about that style of debris to everything that does it. scheduled building demolitions, collapsing bonfires, a fallen cake….. omg plz give it a rest.

  66. Gravatar

Yeah, this could easily be playing on fears leftover from 9/11. A faceless threat that puts everybody into a panic? Sounds familiar.
    Someone said:
“its not a fucking metaphor about 9/11, like people were saying earlyer if he wanted to do something like that he would have made a movie about 9/11. its a monster movie that IS about a MONSTER.”

You realize the original Godzilla was playing on the fears from Hiroshima. (This one isn’t up for debate, that was 100% about the bomb being dropped).

What else… oh yeah, Pat: “to the people complaining about the clowd of dust rolling down the street because it looks too much like 9/11… how else are they supposed to depict it?”

Nobody was complaining about that. Somebody said it looked similar, that was it. Nobody complained about it.

Anyways, it seems like a possibility, so why is everyone getting so pissed off at even mentioning it? Hilarious.

Also, Lovecraftian? Bah, Lovecraft was about people faced with something so horrible their sanity snaps. Far mor personal than what this looks like.

  67. Gravatar

First, I’d guess Abrams invented “viewers” speculation about the nature of the island in “Lost,” it being a nano-creature, similar to the one in the novel “Prey” and Abrams is incorporating that as the monster in “Cloverfield.” After all, we do know “Cloverfield” is the government’s code name for this entity. Eh.. it’s still just another monster movie.

  68. Gravatar

Ok, I have a theory: anyone ever think to put all the 9/11, godzilla, lovecraft, cthulu, and “crimes against nature” crap aside and take it from a different point of view? I doubt this movie is based on any previous work by anyone else, although it could very well have been inspired by others. I doubt that it has anything to do with 9/11. I noticed that someone had said something about the cloud of dust from a collapsing building, which looked exactly the same before 9/11 as it has and ever will afterwards. Then there’s the whole “we f’ed up nature, so this is our punishment” take. Stop reaching for shoestrings people. Has anyone ever taken just 1 second to think that things do not always happen for a reason? If a giant monster did start destroying a city, would whether or not we brought it on ourselves really change the fact that it was still on a rampage? Doe’s a hurricane or an earthquake need a cause or a reason to destroy without discrimination? I would like to think that this movie could have the point of view that something like this could theoretically happen whether we wanted it to or not, and that there never was or ever will be anything we could do about it.
    That’s just my opinion.
P.S. I don’t think it has anything to do with aliens either, at least I hope not, it seems so played out.

  69. Gravatar

I know why monsters don’t attack the suburbs. They know eating all of that fat is bad for their arteries

  70. Gravatar

    HEY GUYS…..

Anyone see this closeup animated gif? At the least we know from this its a bipedal monster.

    http://i123.photobucket.com/albums/o306/WmHohenzollern/1195620248942.gif
