ugh why so slow with the damn release? Just get the thing out there everywhere! They ALWAYS do this with movies like this, actual good ones that you want to see. Its happening with Atonement right now, its taking its time going around as well. Why can’t they just send it wide?!?!?!

Sorry, I know you love it, but there is just no way in hell this is the best movie of the year.

I think a movie has come out each week for the past couple of months that is better than the prepackaged indie quirk film that is Juno.

    Just my opinion.

I’ve seen Juno and I liked it a lot…but it’s not my favorite movie of the year. I liked The Hunting Party the most. That movie is so underappreciated.

Actually, now that I think about it, this was a very disappointing year for movies for me.

Both the people and the critics agree, Juno is one of the best movies of the year. The film is currently getting a 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, 100% cream of the crop, and an 8.6 user rating on IMDb, which if it had enough votes to qualify (right now it has around 2000), would put it in the top 15 movies of ALL TIME (which might be going too far). My point is, people LOVE this movie. And this film is one of the best movies of the year, if not the best (which it is, in my opinion).

The voter breakdown on IMDb tells me everything I need to know about why it’s ranked so high:

    Aged under 18: 9.7
    Aged 18-29: 8.7
    Aged 30-44: 7.8

It doesn’t surprise me at all that kids like this movie.. because the entire thing is written in their vernacular. But as an adult (and don’t think I’m saying this to be pretentious or make me look like I know what I’m talking about), I just can’t get over how prepackaged this whole movie seemed. It’s like Diablo Cody(?) wrote every line on a cocktail napkin as she sat at Starbucks or something. I almost agree with you that Ellen Page deserves any of the acting awards she receives on account of her being able to actually say her dialog on camera without stopping to curse it.

I haven’t seen There Will Be Blood yet but you seem to pair the two into being the best films of the year, after I see it, it’ll be interesting to compare the two.

Glad it’s finally coming to my city. Eager to see it, and hope it lives up to all the hype.

You have to ask yourself how many people actually go to Rotten Tomatoes. You can’t just assume that the general population spends even close to the same amount of time on the web as you do. It would be the top 15 movies of all time, among people who go to these sites, not the general population. Look how many people like Brittany Spears. Do you think she makes the best music in the world? Like I said, I know you love the movie, but don’t make the mistake of assuming that because alot of people like something that that makes it good.

And as for the age breakdown the other poster showed it makes sense too that it would seem fresh and new to younger viewers who simply have not seen as many movies. Which is why it is more been there done that to me, rather than new and fresh. Maybe I need to find the site for older, more jaded movie fans LOL!

    Robert,

I might agree with you about Rotten Tomatoes, there is a definite disconnect between public opinion and movie critics. But I’ve always found IMDB’s user ratings to be a great indication of the mainstream public opinion (sure, there are exceptions, and I’m talking about opinion of the quality of the film and not ticket sales, people mistake the two. Just because Little Man did box office doesn’t mean the people who saw it loved it.)

As for the age breakdown: one figure is missing: Aged 45+ 8.0. Even the 30-44 audience gave the film a 7.8, which should not be discounted. That rating would put the movie in the top couple hundred films of all time according to imdb.

  14. Gravatar

As you and I both know, movies are always rated higher on IMDb, prior to there widescreen release or following the opening weekend. It will in all likelihood come down from its rating in a few weeks, but if it doesn’t then I’ll agree that people like it.

Regardless, I only came back to this comment to ask if you’d ever decided about implementing a message board as this comments section seems proof that /film could use one.
