New Speed Racer Photos

The Wachowski's Speed Racer

USA Today has released eight new photos from The Wachowski’s Speed Racer. When I heard the cast and crew describe how the film looked like “a live action cartoon”, the picture that entered my head looked something like Sin City. But the actual result, seen above, is indescribable.

“The effects are beyond belief. We called it ‘car fu,’ because it was like kung fu with the cars,” Silver says. “We couldn’t have made this movie until right now.”

And there is more photos after the jump. I’m hearing the trailer is not far behind (these photos appear to be screen captures from said trailer). I’m still taking these in and am not sure what to make of them. I think maybe I need to see what it looks like in full motion before I make any judgements, but what do you guys think? Please comment below!

I know they're after a distinctive look, but from those shots it looks to me that they're getting a cross between Tron and Spy Kids. I never had a particular love for the cartoon, so I can't say I'm too excited about it, but it looks like they're being fairly faithful to the original. Whether that's a good thing in a live action movie or not remains to be seen.

I'm more intrigued by the "new system" they've got going which sounds an awful lot like deep focus...
  • Wow, that really looks...horrible.
  • The first photo looks insane. Can't wait for the trailer.

Look pretty baller to me. But then I seem to have the opposite opinion from many folks who comment on here. At least The W Bros. are trying to do something new and different than what we've already seen before a million times. I totally repsect them for that even if the results are sometimes less that what I hope for. Now, whether the script is worth a damn or not is a whole different story. The "family" aspect of the project may tie their hands a bit in this regard. "You know, for kids."

It looks strange, but if you think about it, it has a distinct, strange, Japanese look to it. What with the bright, vibrant colors and all. I'm very excited for this movie. I think it'll be something strange and new, which we could always need more of. Can't wait for the trailer.

Holy crap... I said strange like 4 times, haha. I guess that word sums up what I think about the photos.

I agree, the first pic's pretty sicc! The other pics are with actors aren't really relevant, we're looking for the tech here... I like the live action cartoon look that they have going. Will decide from the trailer.

    one word TRIPPY

hmm, this hyper-reality style is gonna be different to sit through for two hours, but I will give it a shot. I trust the W's storytelling abilities, as well as their ability to create cutting edge cinema. Some of the pics look amazing - like the girl w the checkered flag. But others just seem awkward - like maybe this style is meant for motion, not stills.

I love it! It's amazing and trippy. I don't get complaints that it's too colorful or cartoony. It's a PG movie based on a silly cartoon and co-starring a monkey!

The question is not "Can I take this movie seriously?" It's "Is this movie FUN?"
  • Looks more like a Tim Burton flick than a Wachowski bro's!

Not sure how I feel about Matthew Fox as a lead character either...

Takashi Murakami!!!!!! Its just like his superflat art!!!

He's the guy who did the LV bags with all the psychedelic colors a few years back.

Man, I don't know, those first two pictures look sort of shitty to me. The ones featuring cast members look far better, especially the very last one. Or maybe I'm just easily swayed by hot guys.

I think this 'style' will be a lot easier to define when we can see it in action. I'm really looking forward to the trailer, now.

holy sh*t i can't wait to see this!! this is gonna be a friggin' trip! i love the stylized flares.

i'm not 100% sold on the images with the abstract backgrounds but it's hard to say because they're out of context. but that first photo.....zoinks!!! it's awesome!

goodman looks just like speed's dad too!

looks like there going for the kids and stoned college students at the same time

I'm not sure how I feel...they're almost off putting trippy, but at the same time it does remind of the cartoon. I think I'll just wait till I see the trailer to make my judgement.

The trailer for the film premieres tonight on "Entertainment Tonight" for any U.S. readers.

This movie just moved ahead of The Dark Knight and The Crystal Skull for my 2008 pics. And possibly ahead of Pineapple Express.

What the W.Bros. are doing here is taking anime fully into the mainstream using live-action. This literally reminds me of somebody making "Sonic the Hedge Hog" into a live action fantasia and I think it is GREAT that filmmakers like Zemeckis, JC and the W.Bros. are innovating like never before.

That first pic makes me feel like I'm going to slide into a bevy of shiny golden tokens - and it's not even moving. Insane. There is no reason to hate on this at all. It's totally new.

The look seems to be what Spy Kids and Thunderbirds were aiming for...only hopefully better...much better. The Wachowskis may be a tad overrated, but they do know how to make stuff look cool
  • The trailer is up on Moviefone.com actually. I wrote something about it, but I'm having trouble embedding the video. I'm happy with Ricci being Trixie, but I wasn't liking the bright aesthetics too much. Then again, it's based on Japanese animation so its to be expected.

You have to take this comparison with a grain of salt, but I don't see anything wrong with "a live action videogame". In the end, Tron was just that, and it made history. Of course, these images looke more comic-book like, but that may end up being a cool thing when you look at the final product. They may also have borrowed some elements from Spy-Kids 3D, which, if I'm not mistaken, was a huge hit. I am sure the video-game-like action sequences will be amazing in 3D. And, be honest, what did you expect from a SpeedRacer adaptation? these guys had to think hard, and they came up with a nice concept.

Speed Racer was the center of my universe as an 12 yr old in 1970. The cartoon was the highlight of my day and it is why I developed my life long fascination with cars and racing. I hope that they keep it rated PG so I can take my 4yr old son to see it.
  • I am a forty five year old martial artist and faithful Speed Racer fan.
