First Look: The Punisher: War Zone

The Punisher: War Zone

The photo above is our first look at Ray Stevenson (Rome) as Frank Castle aka The Punisher in Lionsgate’s The Punisher: War Zone. Click on the photo to enlarge.

I’ve always thought that The Punisher would be one of the best comic book to film adaptations, however I wasn’t a fan of the previous Thomas Jane film. I’m not entirely impressed by the photo above, and I’m not entirely convinced of Ray Stevenson as The Punisher (to be fair, I never watched Rome), but I do have faith in director Lexi Alexander (Green Street Hooligans).

Cinematical has an interview with Lexi regarding the film, here are some highlights:

“The one thing I concentrated on was to really really make it as close to the MAX series as possible. I think we really achieved it as far as the look, as well as the tone. When I look at the dailies that I’m getting, I seriously feel like I’m looking at a MAX comic book right in front of me.”

“It’s definitely going to be a Hard R. “

“I would say it’s about 70% gunplay, and 30% hand-to-hand combat.”

“I would say it’s a complete different re-boot, just because neither one of the previous [films] were relevant. And with Castle, it’s one story — the mythology stays the same — and I think I just have a very very different take on it. I was lucky to put it in the right environment, which was dark and cold.”

Continuing his crusade to punish violent criminals in America, former FBI agent Frank Castle arrives in New York to take on a underworld boss who plots to take control of the underworld. The Marvel comic book adaptation co-stars Dominic West, Doug Hutchinson, Colin Salmon, Wayne Knight, Dash Mihok and Julie Benz.

The Punisher: War Zone hits theaters on September 12th 2008.

While Tom Jane definitely looked more like the comic character (sorry there Dolph!), I am feeling the skull here. It looks realistic and not cheesy (and obviously didn't wash up on a beach look the previous installment).

I agree: Punisher should be a bad ass hard-R action bonanza. This is basically Rambo-meets-Commando in the city and it's got to deliver the goods. I'm also stoked on the director - it's kinda sexy having a chick direct Punisher.

Caught Jane's version on cable; where was Shannon Tweed? That movie cost six bucks to make. (and I'm convinced that wasn't really Travolta, but a replicant reeling in a recent hairplug operation).

I am a devoted "Rome" fan and want to put your skepticism to rest. Mr. Stevenson is a hugely talented actor and will not disappoint.

I just think it's too bad the movie gets made just when Jonathan Hensleigh and Tom Jane decide they've had enough waiting...I really liked (loved actually) the 2004 movie, it was full-on b-movie no-holds barred over-the-top action with bigger-than-life characters and a good dose of second-degree and black humour. I won't form an opinion based on solely one pic, and I'll watch it regardless (hell I watched Catwoman knowing full well it would suck hard), but from this pic I feel as though the skull isn't clear enough on the shirt. Maybe I'm wrong...

PS: Leni Alexander is a chick?
  • Meh. I'll have to see more stills.

I lol'd at the last part of Doh Doh's comment though. good times.

I can dig the trying it make it as close to the MAX series as possible. MAX has some awesome writing and storytelling, as well as a harder edge that fits The Punisher character and mythos really well.

I liked Tom Jane as Frank Castle, but this guy looks a hell of a lot more like the character is supposed to.

Hi tr0n. www.ray-stevenson.com has several video clips and photos of Ray Stevenson. where you can see that he really does NOT look like Steven Seagal.
  • AntiHero
Steven Seagal called, he wants his squint back.
  • wingit4me I looked at that site for a while starting with the Punisher fan art section and I gotta say, it made my week. To see Ray as the punisher in all those action shots, and have Godsmack, Metallica, and Disturbed playing on the music player, It gave me very good vibrations. Then I looked at the Rome gallery and realized holy shit the two leads are going on to play the Punisher, AND Thor. Not having seen the show that was right about the time I knew I had to queue the son of a bitch immediately.

Ray ftw, Glad you liked the site and hope you enjoy "Rome". Ray Stevenson's performance in it is simply awesome. His is so talented and believable in his role.

i think the biggest mistake is when you change actors its like you got to start trying to beleive in the charactar all over again cause you will always like one actor better than the next, thomas jane deffenatly looked the better punisher and i actually liked the first film i thought it was one of the best comic films so far,i just hope the next one will be as good all thow im not gonna rush out to see it simply cause of changing actors i mean just look at the batmans from keaton who was in my eyes the best batman getting worse and worse all the way down to christian bale who just about ruined the hole batman saga for me...
