Don’t get me wrong, I love the viral stuff the guys at Warner Bros are doing for The Dark Knight, but this teaser poster for The Dark Knight is a bit disappointing. It might have been interesting if it were released before we ever saw a photo of Heath Ledger as The Joker. But since we’ve seen The Joker, it seems rather pointless to tease his appearance with graffiti on a wall. Check out the full poster after the jump.

Looks like shit. Worst poster for a Batman movie I’ve seen so far. It’s complete and total bullshit.

You’re right Peter, it does seem like a backwards step. It should’ve been shown before Comic Con with the whole WhySoSerious viral campaign.
The upcoming trailer should rock.

I dig the poster and while I agree that this is the direction they should have moved in before revealing Heath’s get-up, unfortunately the first stills of him were leaked to the web and slashed that possibility.
This poster has a dark, sinister yet Warholian edge to it that I definitely respond to. It’s classy to boot. I hope to see this up in a theater hall, because the “gasps” and “oohs” of passerby will be awesome. I love posters that grab everyone.
If the Joker is a madman prancing around Gotham drawing graff on walls in lipstick and eyeliner, I am sort of stoked. I’m not siked on Heath’s image thus far, but his gags and bad jokes will seal the deal. And this is the type of strange city-wide menace I hope to see in the actual film. The Joker as sociopathic punk rock criminal.

Regarding the ad’s timing and internet knowledge - how many “average moviegoers” does this type of viral marketing really reach?
The reveal may not be news to us, but we’re a much more savvy and dedicated fanbase than the “average moviegoer”. Even amongst us, there are many who are interested in the film but don’t have the time or wherewithal (did they really expect anyone to drive cross-country for that WhySoSerious photo challenge?) to dive headfirst into the viral campaign. If it wasn’t for “cheating” on blogs such as this, I wouldn’t have seen any of The Joker images, and my friend - a huge Batman fan (his son’s name is Bruce Wayne Navarrette for Chrissakes!) - is so caught up in work that he didn’t even know about the campaign until chancing upon a physical copy of The Gotham Times at a nearby movie theater.
Besides, I quite like it. I’m glad they’re keeping with the “Why So Serious?” tagline. That’s high concept, right there.

I totally agree with Ed - for most average movie goers - the first glimpse of the Joker they are most likely going to get will be in the Imax 7 min preview before I am Legend.
I don’t think it is “the worst Batman poster I’ve ever seen” but I do think it is a little lacking. I think it actually looks “photoshopped” and not so much real graffiti, but meh - how much can you actually pick it apart?

They’ve certainly alienated the kid audience. Good, though. I want my adult batman movies.

I like it…… :)

does anyone else see what resembles a crucifix in the batman symbol/smile? i don’t know, the idea of batman or somebody being nearly killed as a sort of savior symbol kind of hypes me up…

news flash: i seriously doubt a sizable percentage of movie goers even casually visit movie news sights. Posters are not meant for people like us so i don’t know why you’re all bitching for. Posters are for casual movie goers who don’t constantly follow movie news. If i was walking down the street and saw that poster, i’d be pretty damn interested. I think it’s one of the better movie posters i have seen in recent memory. I would gladly put that up on my wall. Why does a movie poster have to be plastered with the faces of the stars? I actually like these more artistic movie posters a hell of a lot more than the ones that just show the characters.

i dont get it. this poster is fucking elite. i want it in my room.

I think it’s insane to be upset over how a movie is promoted and advertised unless you are actually somehow involved in said promotion and advertisement.
December 5th, 2007 at 12:45 am
the poster rocks pretty f-ing hard! And yes, most of the movie going public has not been following the viral campaign as much as us. its funny how Nolan & co have gone out of their way to make TDK more than just a two hour theater experience - for us, the geeks - yet there will always be ungrareful pricks who find something negative to say.
December 5th, 2007 at 3:03 am
i loce this teaser, we have to remember that there are a considerble number of movie goers out there that will not have been lapping up all the viral stuff and haven’t laid eyes on the joker yet. for some people (and i know its hard to believe) seeing that on a billboard will be the first time they even knew there was a sequel to batman begins, so i think it’s cool that they get to share some of the hype that we rabid fans do.
December 5th, 2007 at 3:58 am
it looks like the picture of a 5-years-old child…
Can’t like it…
And like you say, we already saw the joker…
