Katherine HeiglKatherine Heigl is a hypocrite. There I said it. Heigl bashed Knocked Up in an interview with Vanity Fair:

“It was hard for me to love [Apatow's] movie” because it’s “a little sexist…it paints the women as shrews, as humorless and uptight, and it paints the men as goofy, fun-loving guys.”

But it was easy for her to commit to a starring role in Judd Apatow’s “Sexist movie” which elevated her price-tag from $300,000 to $6 million. But I guess Heigl has no problem profiting off a “sexist” movie.

I’m not going to argue that Knocked Up isn’t a male centric comedy, because it is. But the guys is Knocked Up also are portrayed as uncommitted morons. But I’m okay with that, because I know it’s just a couple characters in a movie. I’m pretty sure that Judd Apatow is not trying to say that the the entire sex is futureless uncommitted idiots.

Jennifer Aniston is able to make a career with the woman centric romantic comedy where she plays a woman who is always angry at the bumbling but “sexy” uncaring or ignorant boyfriend. But those movies aren’t “sexist”, right?

I think everyone will agree that Knocked Up has earned it’s place in comic film history.

Katherine, I’m removing you as my friend on Facebook! :)

Removed off facebook? Man, you showed her!

She also said 98% percent of it was amazing and I think was just being honest about the characters and to be fair she has a point. However, it is that disparity between the characters which makes Apatow comedies so good. And she said “little bit sexist”..she hardly slammed the thing. Geez..talk about over reaction.

I dunno. She owes alot to this film to beat on it like that. And I agree with what they said over at Joblo. Knocked Up probably will be the best thing she will ever be associated with. I don’t see that big of a career panning out for her. I don’t think her range goes beyond “cute nice girl”.

  4. Gravatar

She actually agrees with you somewhat because she says “it paints the men as goofy, fun-loving guys.”

To me although she uses euphemisms here she is basically saying it is sexist in both directions (or at least one could argue that it is what she means).

Just based on your post I would have to say, yeah, I agree. That’s like being a stripper at a club, earning $1,000 in tips and then afterwards saying it’s demeaning.

Wasn’t it demeaning BEFORE you did it? Oh wait, the money came AFTER.

Actually, the film may have appeared a different way to her when she was making it than how it was finally edited together. So that doesn’t automatically make her a hypocrite.

  7. Gravatar

That’s possible, but she did have and read the entire screenplay beforehand.

I’m agreeing with Danny here — all the blog posts I’ve read about this today have been totally SLAMMING Heigl, when I think it was refreshing for her to be so honest about the movie. She said she didn’t love it AT FIRST, and I totally agree with her about the subtle sexism in the movie. In fact, when it first came out, I felt like I was yelling into the wind about the problematic implications about the female characters. Definite overreaction, and I’ve been disappointed at almost everyone’s response to this.

Katherine is a hypocrite. She signed on- did the work- got the big paycheck-moved on up the payscale ladder…Now she bashes Knocked Up- is she dense or what??? This was her big break-check her IMDB page-she’s been in Hollywood for years-this isn’t a newbie….dumb …..

Hey guys! That Diablo chick is pretty awesome though, huh? Grrl power!

  11. Gravatar

No kidding on the overreaction. Calm down, everyone. What should she do, not act in movies that are male-centric and/or sexist? She’d never work. I don’t see what’s wrong with her calling it “a little sexist” (I noticed nobody running the quote feels the need to include the part where she says she loved about 98% of it). Lots of people have mixed feelings about the things they do to earn a living (hell, most people hate what they do for a living).

Props to Heigl. I think Heigl should be allowed to look at her choices, in retrospect, and to share her criticisms! She should even be allowed to change her mind. She was paid for her work as an actress, not paid to like the movie, or to find it beyond criticism. And a stripper can certainly call her work demeaning, regardless of how much or little she gets paid. Who would know better, anyway? You’re not paid to LIKE your job, but to do your job. The original script for this particular movie was very different than the final version. Personally, I found that the movie conformed to annoying gender stereotypes, but no more than most Hollywood movies. Now that she’s established, maybe Heigl can choose more complex roles and better films. This article is no good.

You pro-Heigel people are missing the point. She knew what she was getting into from the start. She saw a script, she obviously saw 40 year old virgin so she obviously knew the vein of humor the film was going to be in, and now she’s a star and getting a fat 6 million dollar paycheck because of it. Certainly she has a right to bash it, but no one was holding a gun to her head to make that film and she knew damn well what she was getting into.

  14. Gravatar

P.S. to previous post: She also just alienated all of her male fans by that comment as well.

  15. Gravatar

I have never spoken to her about it, nor even met her, so I have no idea what she “knew” going into the movie. (And I don’t see how anyone knows whether she alienated all her male fans.) But, again, she didn’t “bash” the movie. She called it “a little sexist” (and also praised it). If I say “that music is a little loud” am I bashing the volume of the music? No, I’m just observing that it’s a little bit louder than I like it. She just thought “Knocked Up,” in spite of everything she liked about it, was a little more sympathetic to the boys than the girls. That’s it.

She’s really only a hypocrite if she’s ever gone on record as saying the movie is not sexist. But I guess if I point out that this website sometimes makes small spelling and grammatical errors it’s the same as bashing it (I like this website, so I’d never bash it). Anyway, I saw the movie a few times and while I can see where she’s coming from, I disagree with her interpretation; I don’t think it’s particularly sexist. But that’s just me. How about everyone who’s now calling her names and disparaging her just take a deep breath, make peace with disagreeing with her, and move on.

    OMG they’re GINORMOUS!!

  17. Gravatar

Sexist or not, it’s pretty accurate in the way most 20 something american males talk.

  18. Gravatar

Hilarious movie! Heigl seems to be the shrew she is railing against. Lighten up Francis!

  19. Gravatar

    Hey thatfella:

First, listen to the commentary track on Knocked Up and then tell me how close to the script they could possibly have stayed. They made up 40% of it as they went along.

Second, why the hell is what she said such a big deal? You act like she shit in your cheerios. Who cares? It’s just a stupid comedy. Get over it. What, you can’t jerk off fantasizing about her any more now? Move on. Jesus what a bunch of babies.

Did u actually read the article?

Doesnt BASH the movie at all all she states that the movie was “a little sexist” “Ninety-eight percent of the time it was an amazing experience”.

She seems very appreciative to wards the movie and the makers and happy that she did it so can someone tell me wtf is all the fuss about?

  21. Gravatar

Katherine Heigl is one of the most stuck-up celebrities around. And I’m not saying that just because of this.

  22. Gravatar

what’s her excuse for being in ” the ringer” with johnny knoxville??

You and I share a similar point of view:

If someone offered you 300k to star in a movie would you? OF COURSE YOU WOULD! Doesn’t mean you have to agree with 100% of everything in it. If that were the case then every single star who was in a commercial would be in trouble.
