One of the coolest thing about the Lord of the Rings books is that they have included maps of Middle Earth. It gave the fictional locale a depth of reality. I guessing seeing is reality, right?
As far as I know, George Lucas never created a map of the Star Wars galaxy. But the galaxy map pictured above was first compiled and published in 2002, in Issue One of The Official Star Wars Fact File. It was later republished in Issue 65 of the Star Wars Insider, which was released in February 2003. Click on the image above to enlarge.
Update: Click Here to see the Star Wars Insider version of the map, whih includes more information around the edges, and is slightly higher resolution.
I would love to be able to purchase this sucker in poster form. You know, LucasFilm should hire us to create new product ideas (not like they need even more products…). A few weeks ago we ran a story on a poster which included the complete Star Wars saga. It’s another great example of something that, for some reason or another, George Lucas has yet to create for sell-able purposes, yet would sell incredibly well to fanboys.

Haha, I had that very first fact file. I never knew the map wasn’t out there in any other published articles by Lucasfilm.
Good to see it again, makes the Star Wars universe seem more like, erm, a universe…

That map has been around for years. A friend of mine printed it up poster size and has it at his house. Maybe I’ll actually stop by and see it when I take him my Revenge of the Jedi poster I promised him [got married.. had to get rid of some of the fanboy stuff. Some. Not all.].

I got that in the Insider issue before I stopped my subscription. I am still a SW fan but I found reading about non-movie news to be not as interesting.
I framed it and it is on my wall still, it’s rather large and is poster size, if I were to guess I would say around 3′x2 1/2′ and is on glossy paper. I would look at from time to time and try to find places I read about or places in the movie and see what routs the characters and ships took to get to and from places.

They added a map into the Star Wars continuation novels. For the New Jedi Order they even added the invasion vectors of the Yuuzhan Vong.

Are that many systems mentioned in star wars? It seems to have more detail than there is ever mentioned in the films.

Loved the map and post… when I look at it, I feel a small tremble of excitement at the thought of all the potential video games and comic books that could come out of the universe.
I’d love to see Star Wars movies from a talented geek, but it looks like that’ll never happen. When will the copyright run out?

I have an original copy of that Insider poster as well. It was released as part of a big hype for the “Star Wars Galaxies” MMORPG game and thus all the added information around the sides are for the planets found in the original release of the game.
This map includes all the planets mentioned in the (pre-2003) movies as well as a lot of the planets mentioned in the Expanded Universe.
As mentioned earlier, the newer books do include a great map which also is fun to look at.
