FightCast - Round 1: Hitman and The Mist

FightCastThe life of a movie journalist isn’t nearly as exciting as one might expect. I spend most nights traveling to and from screenings, and I often find myself on the phone with my good friend and fellow journalist Alex Billington, who runs FirstShowing. We usually have very different opinions on movies and have always joked about hosting a podcast called FightCast, where we would fight it out over our movie views. After a year of talking, we’ve decided to start recording these conversions and put it online for you to listen. And that is what this is, two friends fighting it out over the latest movie releases. Ready for Round 1?!

If you’re looking for high production value, look elsewhere. This isn’t even a show, it’s a conversation between two film geeks. We’re still working out the kinks on this whole podcast, but we’re excited to launch the very first episode.

In this week’s FightCast, we battle it out over Hitman and The Mist, two big Thanksgiving films that opened just yesterday. Hitman is an R-rated action flick based on a video game that stars Timothy Olyphant and is directed by Xavier Gens. The Mist is a horror, thriller based on the Stephen King novel and is directed by Frank Darabont.

Within the next few weeks after today’s launch we’ll be starting a specific website just for the FightCast. Updates will be posted there and also linked to from here. For now, continue to follow the updates on here and on FirstShowing. We hope you enjoy the very first episode of Fight Cast.

About the Author

Peter Sciretta is a film geek and popcultured fanboy living in San Francisco. He created /Film in 2005.

  • DIE HARD
die hard is better than hitman.
  • Hey Peter! Love to concept of this podcast. Between you and Alex, I don't know of two people who are more fun to talk movies with. That said, you've gotta go after Alex more, man. He is so far out there with his fanboyishness (yes, I made that word up just for him. I mean, comparing 'Hitman' to 'The Matrix'? Calling two-bit director Xavier Gens one of the best directors out there? That is like saying that George Lucas should start taking pointers from Uwe Boll.

In your next episode, I expect you to put Alex in his place. Someone has to do it. :)
  • Neil, thanks. Don't worry, Alex will get his, I just wanted to let him digg his own hole in the first round to establish his fanboyishness :P
  • Jessica
You and Alex are huge nerds, I don't know why I'm friends with you people....
  • Jessica,

Clarification: We're geeks not nerds. Nerds are book smart and usually introverted, Geeks have an excitement and over-investment in a particular interest (movies, comics, computers...etc) and usually are extroverted with other people of that interest.

The reason why you're friends with me and Alex is because Geeks are IN. Look at tv shows.... Heroes, Chuck, Lost, Reaper, all popular shows that revolve around geek characters. Look at movies... SuperBad, Knocked Up, Napoleon Dynamite... etc

Geeks are the new cool. Who woulda thought?
  • TheSnowLeopard
Pretty good podcast. I always like to hear new voices throwing their movie opinions into the ring.

Though I gotta say the audio was pretty crummy. Hope you guys can improve it for Ep. 2.

    Cheers
  • congratulations for the podcast !! It's a great addition to the site :-)
  • Pete -- I love the explanation of the difference between a 'Geek' and a 'Nerd'. I almost want to have that printed, framed and mounted on the wall above my desk.

Also I agree with "TheSnowLeopard", the audio quality was a little rough. What are you using to record?
  • Andrew Ferris
I really enjoyed the podcast and the great points you guys made. I saw Mist today and was surprised you didn't coment on the very depressing ending. I'm not going to spoil it but i was so shocked. If I ever was going to see Hitman, I would have the lowest expectations ever. It looks terrible with only explosions and Wyatt Earp shooting.
  • Mark
First of all, the audio quality isn't great because these guys are recording it 1000 miles away from eachother. It's recorded over the phone, so no reason to complain about the audio quality. That's as good as it's going to get.

And I'm with Alex on Hitman. Maybe sometimes I just want to go to a theater and watch explosions and swordfights and turn off my brain and stop worrying about "Could this really happen in real life?" I was ENTERTAINED by Hitman. That's it, entertained. That's all I wanted, that's all I expected. I did not experience any sort of enlightenment during this movie. But that's exactly what I wanted. I think Peter is more concerned with the realism of this film than the coolness of this film. I'm with you Alex. Hitman was cool. Go see it on the big screen.
  • Jessica
So are you saying that because you're geeks and not nerds you guys aren't book smart cuz I totally agree.....
