Lionsgate sent us two new photos from the set Will Eisner’s The Spirit, which is directed by Frank Miller (Sin City).
I just got back from Albuquerque, New Mexico, where I went on set for the new Gerard Butler sci-fi action film (codenamed Game). Frank Miller was also in town filming The Spirit on a green screen stage in the city. On my plane ride home, I sat next to a guy working for the production. He was traveling to San Francisco to buy some Art Deco props from Bay Area antique shops, for the film. He listed a few of the films he’s worked on, Transformers included, and claimed that The Spirit is by far the coolest he’s ever been involved with.
The Spirit is set to hit theaters on January 16th 2009.

i hadn’t even heard of the spirit before will eisner passed awa yand the comics community, rightly, made the magnitude of his loss felt. darwyn cooke’s recent run has been amazing and made me wanna pick up the original stuff.
i think it kicks ass that miller is a directornow because he has a strong sense of visual style so i’m excited to see this and even more excited to see what he does in the future.
heh, cooler than transformers….

It’ll be interesting to see how Frank Miller does as a director on his own… but quite frankly (no pun intended), the facts that he was “mentored” by Robert Rodriguez and that he appears to be filming the whole movie greenscreen are leading me to believe that this movie will suffer.
To learn from a director whose characters always lack dimension and relies way too much on CG is not a good thing, no matter how innovative that director may be in other areas.
